Videos: Nokia N8 versus Samsung Wave (and iPhone 4)

| October 18, 2010 | 16 Replies

Here’s another side by side split screen comparison between the Nokia N8 and this time the Samsung Wave. This is from gsmarena07

The wave, despite supposedly recording at 30FPS looks jerkier and less fluid in movement than what’s labelled as the N8. (Noticeable in the car portion)

Next – iPhone 4. I don’t understand why the iPhone 4 video is wobbling. Is the N8’s video stabilization that effective? (On early tests I’ve tried it’s surprisingly steady.)

Err, iPhone 4 video is wobbling because as is well established now, the camera is nowhere near as good quality as the N8 despite costing a lot more. Simple enough!

this thing reminds me Engadget review on the N8 video recording.. i think Engadget is just pathetic… I did not know how they could manage to get the N8 to lose framerate… Night mode, maybe.

Here is a perfect example what the playback frame rate means. Before they used to compare videos shot with N8 by playing them together with a video shot with iPhone and using the iPhone’s native frame rate of 30. N8 of course looked jerky. Now they do the comparison by using N8’s native frame rate of 25. No more jerkiness in N8 and iPhone is now jerky as hell.

You just cannot compare two videos within one video when the videos are shot with different frame rates. Other one is going to suffer depending on the frame rate used in playback.

    • That is an interesting thought. Has anyplace uploaded the original videos too, along with the split screen?

  • Collins

I had to LOL cause the iphone’s video sucks soooooooo much and one of the comments on youtube is pure win: “iphone is jumping like mario all over the place” 😀

  • John Rogerson

its rly funny, cause I have iphone 4 and my video dont have any jerkines and its not shaky, I think the one who recorded this dont have good right arm 🙂 and btw colours r better with iphone 4 in that video posted here, so its ok, and first of all N8 with symbian = fail..

    • Stylinred

colours arent realistic on the ip4 tho

If you want to make Steve Jobs a wealthier man go ahead please please please. But who knows maybe your being sarcastic 😉

    • Dave

You’ve been listening to, and obviously believing steve jobs for too long.

The videos and pictures from the iPhone 4 are fine in isolation. But as soon as you compare them to the original object, the colour rendition is just plain wrong.

Wrong colours does not equal better.

So please stop abusing the word “fail”. But it does apply to your post.

  • i prefer samsung wave

Ehhhh….. I was confused btwn 2 phones Nokia N8 and Wave. But now I can see Wave is a clear winner. N8 for those who want to see the world dull and dark 😀

  • Neil

Samsung Wave picture is more dynamic and sharp. Much better than the other 2.

This makes me feel better (if just going on this evidence) as I had wanted the N8 for my work phone (for it’s 12MP camera and big memory) but got the Wave instead because of the delayed N8 launch on O2. Although it comes with less than 0.5GB space, the video camera is very good.

And I can’t believe jerkiness is being mentioned. That has nothing to do with the actual quality of the image. Already mentioned but fps is a factor and also depends on what settings are applied on the phone in terms of image stabilisation.

And for those obsessed with high MP on cameras, you need to bear in mind that most mobiles are less sophisticated than proper cameras. With smaller pixels it can mean less light is being let in and that makes for a grainier picture at low-light levels.

what a joke if u compare n8 with samsung wave still okay because n8 camera can beat wave any day,but dont kid urself with the stability of iphone 4,ive used all three phones and the ranking goes as
    1. iphone 4-best screen, most apps, fluid video and crisp photos, video has most stability and vivid colours, and feels like a powerhorse.and it would be like comparing king and beggar if u pit n8 against iphone.
    2. wave- midrange phone so not as good as iphone, but the super amoled is brighter and colourful than the iphone and the phone never hangs never stucks and plays even the most intensive games effortlessly and the apps are more abundant than symbian^3 now with around 100 or more high quality 3d games available and 70% of them free.the camera is good for a 5 mega pixel and believe me than the fanboy here when i say that wave has no video or photo choppiness and videos shoot is better than n8 but fanboy here just decreases the fps of iphone and wave and then compares with n8 what a at 17000 INR its a steal. n8-a camera phone that produces dark and shady photos which my nikon berates at half the settings, so better get a samsung wave and a 10k INR, USD 300$ camera.the processor is pathetic with games sucking at minimal fps.the os itself is not fluid and takes a few seconds to even change landscape to vertical are all very costly on ovi store and the gps here in india has no idea what it is doing unlike the route 66 on wave which gave a pinpoint location, video playback is very stable but noone wants to watch gray videos on a amoled that looks pathetic than a lcd. all in all if u want to have digital camera combine phone and are not much of a video or gaming fan but do intensive office work on ur phone then the n8 is the choice for u.
