Video: Nokia C5-03 Hands on

| December 8, 2010 | 12 Replies

Here’s another rare hands on with the Nokia C5-03. Yes 03, not the C5-01 T9 candybar

  • Push and unlock on screen (like X3-02. No slider switch it appears)
  • Demo goes through several aspects of the phone:
    • Kinetic scrolling
    • Contacts
    • Music Player
    • Facebook app
    • Old style keyboards
    • Web Browser
    • Ovi Maps

Not bad. Like a slimmer, updated 5800. If you can spend more, there’s the option of a Symbian^3 CBD AMOLED C6-01.

I think quite a lot of people would prefer spending a bit more and get the C6-01. It’s just better than C5-03 in every way. Better OS, Better hardware, better interface, better apps, and not to mention, AMAZING screen.

    Symbian^1 needs to die asap.

I wonder how low Symbian^3 devices can be pushed. Maybe if Nokia used a resistive LCD, all plastic materials, an older camera, maybe even a cheaper gpu if that’s actually possible (to keep the smooth scrolling etc). Then we could get a symbian^3 device closer to the £100/150 mark.

    • Keith

Resistive LCD – S3 has to have multitouch.

cheap GPU – then what’s the use of all the s3 apps?

I’m just throwing out ideas on how to get Symbian^3 devices down to a price point so that Symbian^1 doesn’t have to exist.

I like how the CPU/GPU/RAM mean that there isn’t any fragmentation; I just hope there is some way to cut costs too.

Does it have to have multi touch?

        • Keith

Well, whats the point of having a new OS that can support great features if the hardware itself doesn’t support it?

I think eventually, after MeeGo has been released and embraced properly, S^1 will fade away and like Nokia promised, S3 will move to mid/low end phones.

Actually they can push S3 on lower device like this, and they should. This OS creates only frustration. I played with this device in a shop and it’s not smooth at all. All the S3 devices have 8Mp+ camera + metalic shell . they can make a symbian 3 device with plastic and a 5Mp camera or a 3.2 Mp camera and a 3.2inch or 3 inch screen. and sell it at C5-03 price.
What nokia needs is to create as less fragmentation as they can, and they can do this by removing S1 and focusing more on S3. Plus all new apps are being build for S3 devices where you can implement multi touch, so another way is to make sure you have as many downloads from ovi store as you can

@Jay, change the title from nokai to nokia :)

I’m not expert, but as a S^1 user I have to say that the fragmentation in Symbian isn’t really that serious. Most of the apps (not games) developed for S^3 can be easily port to S^1. Not to say those coded with Qt.

The question is hardware. Deploying S^3 under S^1 quality hardware will only cause more fragmentation than separating S^3 and S^1. As we seen in Android, let’s say X10 mini and the original X10 from SE. Both of them running Eclair, but the experience is so different that you will feel disappointed X10 mini isn’t as good as Android is being said. (although that is a good phone)

Like Vivaz and Satio from SE. They are running S^1 but having S^3 alike hardware. It makes Nokia S^1 user somewhat confuse when there is a game released, and we yet to know if it supports Nokia S^1 phone which didn’t has a dedicated GPU. WP7′s idea of having similar hardware regardless of manufacture is actually a good idea in order to prevent fragmentation. (but the Zune dependent stuff is idiotic)

So personally, I would prefer they polish S^1 as on C5-03 (with single tap UI and all those little fixes here and there) and separate S^1 and S^3 by the hardware of the handset itself.
