Site maintenance going on soon. Email subscribers may have to resubscribe

| December 30, 2010 | 14 Replies

Hello all! I am currently undertaking the task of installing wordpress, installing a theme and importing posts from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.

Nothing YET is going on since I haven’t got a clue what the hell I’m doing. I think I’ve performed a one click installation yet I’m just being redirected to a www.mynokiablog.com/admin panel to which I’m told “the page does not exist”.

If the move goes as planned, folks who have subscribed to mynokiablog.com’s post will have resubscribe. Very sorry, but that’s what wordpress says.

Fingers crossed I don’t accidentally delete this blog.

Also worth noting: wordpress has said this blog is too big to manually export the blog. This means I will have to ask wordpress to give me the export file. Any new posts/comments appearing during this transition period won’t be carried over. bleh.

You can follow my frustrations at my twitter @jaymontano :p

hey mate, gimme a buzz if you have any issues, I have done it before and it should be relatively straight forward…just won’t make the same mistake I did and try to install it as a ad-on domian on another existing hosting…it will only work if the wordpress one is the primary domain.

  2. llaadd says:

and that web address won’t exist as the “mynokiablog.com” domain is still pointing to wordpress.com servers.

p.s. you can get my number by clicking on my username <<< ;)

Aaaaah, I see. I did remember telling me it was my responsibility to change dns servers.

So I must stop it pointing to wordpress and to dreamhost? During which time the site will be down. Unfortunately I don’t have the xml export file yet (wordpress issue, I have to ask them for one).

      • llaadd says:

yep, do it once you have the xml as you will have some down time.

        1) get nameservers for your private domain
        2) go to the wordpress.com, to settings and then domains under “Domain Administration” type a password to manage your domain, and copy the “Customer Number:” just above the “Manage your domains” link at the bottom.
        3) Click “Manage Your Domains” at the bottom then use the customer number and password from step 2.
        4) once logged in, click on the domain in question
        5) Click on where it say’s “Locking” and has a padlock symbol near the top left.
        6) a pop-up should show, unselect the box that say’s “Lock domains” and click on
        7) after a few min, you should be able to click on “Set Nameservers”, click on “I have specific nameservers for my domains.” and enter the ones given to you by your hosting company in step 1 (there is usually 2) and click ok 8) it can take 24-48 hours in some occations of the domain to transfer unfortunetly so you will have to be patient! – but I have seen it happen in hours!

Like I said gimme a call if you need help…much easier to explain over the phone!

My hosting and domain are different. I have hosting with dreamhost and domain with namecheap.

Is it right in me thinking that I should change namecheap to point to the dreamhost dns and not wordpress which it is currently set at.

When this occurs, mynokiablog.com will point to dreamhost wp installation.

I should then import the file I receive from wordpress.

I can then play around with themes and such and relax.

I wish there was a way that this was much, much easier. Like here’s some money, here’s my blog, move it to selfhost. Done.

      • llaadd says:

ow and don’t forget to lock the domain once you have finnished!

      • llaadd says:

ow and like in my case, if things go wrong, do the same as I just described but in step 7 select “I have a hosting account with these domains.” and click ok and hopefully things should go back to wordpress.com…hopefully you won’t have to do this!

Good time to make those DNS changes though, when a large percentage of people in the world will be drunk tomorrow! :P

    llaadd :

hehe…yer if only…but if u struggle I can sort it for you.

I will send over passwords if/when I fail to do this tomorrow.

I am sooo knackered right now I just want to go to bed and deal with it in the morning :p (not tired from this of course, tired from trapsing about and getting them “sales”).

Thanks soo much for this help dude!

Jay, I own a company that works with web developers, and I tend to use dreamhost for US sites, so if you have any questions, hit me up!
