Nokia N8 Software Update Available! Apps Update 1.0

| January 12, 2011 | 216 Replies

We received an email from Georgios to tips@mynokiablog.com informing us that an “Apps Update 1.0″ was available at the Software Update section on the N8. I didn’t see anything when I checked and thought it was yet another “software update rumour”, despite Georgios informing us moments later that,

“It adds some transition effects when switching between screens, the camera application fires faster…”

Sorry Georgios! I just checked again now after being tweeted by @vipin124 and lo and behold, it’s there.

So go to “Software Update” scan for updates and download. Can anyone else confirm what changes you’ve noticed?

What I’ve checked so far:

  • Folders opening a touch faster? Restarted three times, normally there is an initial lag the first time you open them up but that doesn’t seem to be there
  • Some users have reported faster camera – not noticed this myself
  • The lock switch now turns the screen on/off immediately. I distinctly remember a slight delay, and that is still present on my mate’s N8 (without update) though that might be due to different product numbers/build date.

Check out my 1 bar signal with T-Mobile. Bah, totally sucky T-Mob in central Manchester – and you make it worse with your new 500mb “unlimited” data limit.

This isn’t the firmware update we’re waiting for btw.

  1. Denys Shevchenko says:

refreshing failed – try again later , cant update :/ weird …

  2. Just checked my software update on my N8 and the update was there. Updating now.

  3. Jack says:

Can’t retrieve the list of available updates on my N8. Looks like the servers are very busy, same as yesterday.

  4. salman jehanzeb says:

have updated and it really speeds up the hell out of phone from changing homescreens to ovi store and games loading awesomely fast and keyboard is awesomely responsive now ……. Kinetic scrolling is increased nd brower loads web pages in a millisecond ……. M commemting rite now through n8……. Nd i think no mistake in writing cz of awesome responsiveness of keyboard ….yeah man its just flying

  5. ramses71 says:

Got this installed today (available in Canada) and yes it sped things up quite a bit for me. Camera startup was markedly faster, switching screens, typing was responsive (better calibration from what I can tell), apps starting… all noticeably faster.

  6. Rodzjer says:

I downloaded the update but cancelled it during installation. Not very clever … In the section where the update history is displayed ther is a message that it has been cancelled. Is there a way to restart the installation.

    • Anil says:

If you cancelled the installation like i did…
please check ur search application. (menu->applications->search) and then click options and about. If the version is 5.00.1032 then the update was successful.

  7. gjini says:

You guys must be dreaming… I got two N8 at home (my sister’s) and I installed the update just in one of them to see the difference. I’m sorry, but apart from the browser’s “search” option, there’s nothing else new. I mean, even the speed etc is exactly the same. I click the “application” icon at the same time and they open quasi simultaneously (if there is a slight difference it comes from the fact that I can’t click on them EXACTLY at the same time). Really nothing noticeable… :P

    • Jim H. says:

Check camera startup speed. It is definitely faster.

      • gjini says:

Of course I did… It was exactly the same! But if we’re talking about 0.05 s non detectable for the human eye, then maybe yes, you’re right ;)

        • Mic1 says:

Maybe the other model already has the new version. Alex68 just wrote in the other post that recently manufactured N8s already have this update preinstalled.

          • gjini says:

Nope, cos I just installed it there too. But anyway, if you feel it’s quicker then good for you. I was with two phones in my hand and I couldn’t :)

    • Mendax says:

I have to agree, for the most part. I do feel like the keyboard (I’ve only tested it with the T9 input) is snappier, but other than that, I haven’t noticed a big difference. But even still, any upgrade, however minor, is still welcome.

    • Don says:

I agree with you, I did the same with one N8 with and one without the update, there is no visible difference. Not camera startup, not rotation speed.

And yet some posters in blogs are seeing improvements in anything and everything, placebo effect :)

    • alex68 says:

Could you tell me when you bought you N8? This is important for me to track the different results and figure out the reasons…

  8. chestertan says:

my n8 did got faster after the update

  9. Anil says:

Any ideas what Nokia phone and which firmware this is running?…
    http://vimeo.com/16591421

And i do agree with gjini. I have two N8′s as well (one’s my sisters) and before i updated hers – I compared mine with hers and they were almost exactly the same :S

  10. ace101 says:

Have compared to another N8 non-updated and well this update does make it faster, the locking and unlocking screen speed has increased. Opening folders speed has also increased. Not quite sure about the camera, that still seems the same to me.

  11. Mazze says:

Screen switching is also slightly faster. But is this what they took 3 months for? Still no improvement on the keyboard or the browser? Don’t tell me this comes with another update in Feb. Cause speaking in Nokia terms this means Feb 12.

  12. 怎麼更新 says:

    請問要如何更新?我按手機更新
    有一個N8-00 裝置更新 她說要用電腦連到SOFTWAR3EUPDATE 但我不會用電腦更新

  13. Triv says:

Hi, my installation seemed to be taking ages so I cancelled it thinking I would be given the option to re-install…but now when I go to view update history, it just tells me the installation was cancelled and it won’t let me re-install. Anyone know how to try a re-install?

    Thanks.

  14. Nygel says:

Try connecting device to computer while listening. you may now access device(watch movies, listen to music, copy files) while it is connected to computer.

  15. Luca says:

I too cancelled the update because it was taking forever. Considering Anil’s method the update was successful, but it’s annoying to be unable to reset the log, reinstall the update.

  16. mario says:

Also I have the same problem with installing the apps update. It stopped for some reasons and now it’s written that the update was unsuccessful and it doesn’t allows me to do it again. Is there a way to download the file itself (I have a Mac) and to update my N8 manually?

  17. Nokia nyc says:

I checked today over the air and through ovi suite and got nothing. How did you guys in u.s. Get it already I an here too and getting nothing

  18. murad says:
