Anybody in the UK wondering what Theo Paphitis from Dragon's Den is doing working at NAVTEQ? 😛

Microsoft to help NAVTEQ (Nokia’s wholly owned subsidiary which they bought for 8 Billion dollars) collect data and integrate it in products.

  • Revolution – next generation of collecting data.
  • 4 sensor types to be deployed. 360 panoramic video, high resolution high res videos (6 different cameras for horizontal) LiDAR technology capturing 1.3million points every second to building a digital model then GPS and IMU sensor.
  • All this data allows building of highest quality 3D model of the world
  • Capture and maintain to continue update database of highest quality.
  • Apparently there’s a video demo that shows just what quality – allowing recognition of TREES, road signs, traffic lights. Very high level of detail for advanced maps
  • What’s microsoft’s part? No exact details but on the processing of the data, on the blurring side (privacy of people, faces, number plates etc)
  • How will microsoft use this? We’re told to ask microsoft/refer to their plans.

Microsoft are already using NAVTEQ to power BING maps. It will be interesting to see how Ovi/Nokia Maps will be integrated, in addition to Microsoft’s already strong 3D/Birds eye maps and Live Earth to Windows Phone.

Cheers Fahoum for the heads up!
