Here’s a gem of an application/platform that has made it’s way to Ovi Store for Symbian^3 (and Apparently Nokia N97/N97 mini)

It’s called Layar, you might have seen it for iPhone but Symbian^3 users can now download it too!

Augmented reality blends digital with the real world, so right in front of your eyes, augmenting reality using GPS and a compass to overlay the layers onto Layar as viewed through the camera

The information added on Layar is growing all the time and at the moment has over 1750 to choose from (though for different locations).

Just think from the usual stuff you’d look for like shops/restaurants/public transportation stops to having an augmented reality tour guide of a new city, see where people have previously visited. It’s a great way of finding places, or finding about places around you that you wouldn’t otherwise notice.

Of course, being augmented reality, you don’t even have to make the view about what you can currently see. Some look back into history by recreating buildings previously there, or perhaps just randomly just recreate the city around you with your own layer. Think, fancy treasure-hunt that ends in some uber-geeky-romantic proposal. Think augmented reality gaming. Right now, augmented reality is getting synonymous with Layar and this platform is really only limited to your imagination (and well, how well you code but you can always find someone who could help).

Have you tried out Layars yet? What are your favourite/recommended layers?

Cheers for heads up Alan and vishal400
