Anna Browser vs Vanilla S^3: 7.3 vs 7.2

| July 16, 2011 | 36 Replies

For the weekend reading we can go check out AllAboutSymbian’s feature on the new Anna browser, comparing speed differences between 7.3 and 7.2 (in vanilla).

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/13103_How_much_faster_is_the_Symbian.php

In this isntance Rafe Blanford is comparing C7 with X7 with default browser over 4Mbps ADSL connection. The core internals relevant to testing are identical in C7 and X7. Similar tests on N97 mini (with and without 7.3 showed 30% improvements in the latter). As expected from Rafe, the results are repeated 5 times, discarding the slowest and fastest results to come up with some pretty fair results on the default browser speeds.

Caching was allowed and Rafe notes this is much better on 7.3 (great for sites you visit quite often). I did note myself that with E6, browser load times was much more acceptable, as was general operation of the browser due to improved user interface.

Shorter bars is better.

Alternatively you can also check out comparisons between older Anna builds and PR1.2

As often mentioned, for even faster web, use Opera Mobile.

Cheers for the tip for yasu

Opera beats all these. It takes 0.001 secs to open global.nytimes.com lol. I’m not looking for a browser in the upcoming Anna. I only want my C7 to run faster and swifter.

    • Mapantz says:

The only thing Opera is good for, is Facebook. And a GOOD browser doesn’t revolve around one site.

      • Taigatrommel says:

Really? I’m using Opera Mobile for virtually every website I visit. It simply blows the standard browser out of the water in every single way. UI, performance, features and responsiveness is simply miles ahead. Only thing missing is the flash support.

Obviously the Anna browser suffers the fate I feared:
Better than the vanilla browser, still worse than Opera Mobile. Which renders one of the primary Anna features almost useless.

        • Mapantz says:

“Virtually every website” – “No flash support”

          I think you’ll find you’ve made a massive contradiction.

          • Taigatrommel says:

Most websites I’m visiting aren’t flash heavy. But it might depend on personal preference what kind of sites you are using.

            • Mapantz says:

My own website isn’t ‘flash heavy’ but it uses flash and Opera fails miserably. I even use PHP one one part of it, it won’t render that period. Yet the original Symbian^3 browser did all that, that’s a pretty big case for something incomplete in my book.

      • Emmanuel says:

Sorry but not true… I use 11.1 with all my favorite sites and it is a JOY to use…

      • Goc says:

Opera is a hundred times better than the preloaded browser, especially when handling javascript.
        Flash is useless and irrelevant.

        • Hypnopottamus says:

Flash is useless and irrelevant? Really? That is a bullshit comment. Try viewing any blog entry on MNB that has embedded video. Unless it is in html5, you’re shit out of luck. Most embedded videos today are still using Flash. Again, what do you do when there is an embedded video? Don’t tell me that Flash is “irrelevant” and “useless.”

        • Mapantz says:

I can give you 101 sites that use Javascript and Opera fails miserably to render them.

  2. Aliqudsi says:

Since when is original browser called Vanilla?

  3. Blackidea says:

    v8 will come with belle.
Hope based on webkit2 like N9

  4. Mapantz says:

Well i’m sorry to say, this browser maybe quicker, but inmy opinion it’s worse than the original browser. I say that because the new browser doesn’t work on a lot of sites that use flash, whereas the oldone did. I think that’s a big enough problem to call this new browser poor.

  5. DAEX says:

Hope the future Belle Web browser can smooth like iPhone Safari.

  6. Emmanuel says:

Recently switched from Opera 10.0 to 11.1 whhaaaooo it is a joy to use… Fast, reliable, pinch to zoom, manage character size like a charm, and already has split keyboard…

    Highly recommended…

    Franckly the new browser… I don’t care of it…

    • Mapantz says:

Except you can’t go to all the sites that use flash. And please don’t say ‘I don’t go to any’
Because there are many that do, and the fact that Opera can’t render them, is a hugeeeeeeeee flaw.

      • Goc says:

Yes, you’ve repeated this several times already, hardly anyone cares. Flash is a relic that should disappear soon.

        • Mapantz says:

And i’ll keep on repeating it if people insist on how great Opera is, when it’s clearly not.
And as for flash disappearing soon .. lol
Flash will be around for many years to come, it won’t be going anywhere soon. :-)

          • Goc says:

Repeating something won’t make it true, nor will it change the opinion of the majority.

            • Hypnopottamus says:

I call BS! Flash should go away soon? Lets assume that is true. What about NOW? Can you see embedded video? Didn’t think so. Try again.

            • Mapantz says:

The opinion of the majority won’t change the fact that it’s useless without flash support. :-)

              • Taigatrommel says:

Obviously it is not “useless” when so many people love Opera Mobile as their everyday browser.

              • Hypnopottamus says:

Problem is, it appears Symbian fans are in denial about web browsing. They want so badly to have their browser to be competitive w/ the competition they focus on speed, but totally neglect user browsing experience.

Several times that Opera has come up in discussions I have asked what people do when there is embedded video. No one EVER replies. Apparently ignoring a shortcoming often enough makes that shortcoming disappear.

The discussion section in the All About Symbian linked article above is very telling. People are trying to convince others (and themselves) that Opera on Symbian is on par w/ browsing on other platforms. When Flash (embedded videos included) is brought up, it is conveniently ignored. Opera on Android can do Flash so it’s 10x better than on Symbian. Plus, it can be set as the default browser and be opened up as such from ANYWHERE, unlike on Symbian.

  7. pep says:

isnt qt based Minibrowser faster than both nokia browser and opera??? my experience says that

  8. Alex says:

what about Flash Player 10.3 on next browser ? N900 with real Flash Player is better than the best internet tablet !

  9. Hypnopottamus says:

I have to say, it really baffles me how anyone can just say “use Opera, and problem solved.” How can people all out dismiss Flash as if it adds nothing to web browsing experience? What’s wrong with wanting as close to desktop browsing experience as possible?

When Skyfire released their browser for iPhone (which doesn’t do Flash), so many people wanted it, they crashed the download server! To hear Symbian fans say Flash is useless and doesn’t matter truly confuses me. Like it or not, Flash is the standard TODAY when it comes to embedded videos. Don’t you wamt to be able to view them via mobile browser?

    *End of rant*

  10. @jaredmorgs says:

I personally like Opera Mobile, but the fact that most of the Symbian applications don’t support Opera even if you set it to the default web browser in system settings makes it very frustrating.

I’ve been told why this is many times before: WebKit apps will only use a WebKit browser, and override the system defaults. Hope this gets fixed in Anna or subsequent releases.

    opera great 11.11
