Nokia Sleeping Screen beta updated. Use your own background images!

| August 18, 2011 | 43 Replies

I love the always on clock in Symbian^3 during standby (and being AMOLED, doesn’t consume too much power). A beta labs app called sleep screen took it one step further with some beautiful, colourful graphics to add to your standby screens.

The app has received an update again, this time with your own pictures.

  • The most wanted feature: use your own background images! It is now possible to add your own images from the photo gallery.
  • “Add my own” tool will convert your photos & drawings to be suitable for Nokia Sleeping Screen
  • Completely re-designed QML based settings view
  • New experimental clock style
  • There are now two selectable clock & notifications styles:
    • original “colorful” style
    • new “plain clock” style, which gives more room for the background images
  • New pre-installed image themes and additional images to the old themes
  • Follows phone orientation when keys are locked (i.e. now  supports landscape)

I can’t try this out at the moment because I’m getting Ovi log in fail for a while now. I’ll update when I do.

Thanks to @Kobus_Nell and Rainbow_S3 for the tip

Ah pics updated on beta labs

Update 2: Demoed on N8 (cheers to @DhruvBhutani for mailing us a copy since Beta Labs sign in to Ovi still dead)

Add your own gallery view

Pic an image.

Tada

I really hope the beta labs team have a chance to create stuff like this and situations and big screen for windows phone and Meego. The things they come up with are excellent, and it would be a shame if they were not allowed to take some of these ideas to Windows phone and innovate there as well.

  15. Localed says:

i’ve just tried it and it is AWESOME! Great app menu style, great night mode setting style, no any freeze and image converting just takes 6-7seconds

  16. Heh.. says:

How do you make lanscape mode like the 4th picture? I can’t find any settings to do so =/

    • Heh.. says:

Oh. Sorry, didn’t see the part where it says “Follows phone orientation when keys are locked (i.e. now supports landscape)”.

Either way i guess i can’t find the ‘right’ images to put up. All my images turns out really ugly =( Guess i’ll just revert back to plain old no-theme for now..

      • Jake says:

The images that renders the best results i found being simple images with black backgrounds. For example some of the sample pictures that came with the N8, like the white jellyfish on black background, came out really well.

  17. stylinred says:

    Its working (login)

and its been installed, and to answer my own question yes you can make a theme pack (i was worried that it may be individual images only) of your own images

the conversion process seems adequate i think they can improve upon it to use less pixels and to better detect colours (some images i tried simply showed up as black and white even though the image is red and white albeit a dark red)

  19. Just Visiting says:

Question for users of Betalabs…Does anyone know why these apps/utilities are not available in the Ovi Store? I realize that it may be because it is beta (‘beta’labs), but at what point does it move from beta to the actual Ovi store? Just seems like a very nice tool, but it just seems incovenient to have to go another site and create an account in order to get this download.

    • asdf says:

Yup, it’s just for beta level stuff. The whole point is that people can give feedback and feature requests while they are developing. After the software is deemed mature enough, they “graduate” from Betalabs to Ovi Store (or straight to updater like Maps). I think they have a separate Betalabs app in there too.. and you can use the regular Ovi account to login afaik. Sleeping screen seems pretty finished already though.

    We Must Buy it??????
