Video: 6 homescreens on Belle
Earlier today (previous post), a more recent version of the Leaked Belle firmware became available. Here’s a demo of 6 homescreens from Belle by Vlado/aiviou which I think is now standard for Belle?
Some folks have mentioned that there’s even versions that will allow 100-1000 homescreens! That’s crazy. Haha. I think 10 at most is enough :p But nice to see the option is there if you want more (I am happy with about 4. ). I think with a simple enough ‘hack’, even old Symbian^3 could have more homescreens than standard.
Reports so far on twitter (e.g. from @bharadc23) says N8 is handling 6 homescreens fine.
I think this is reminding me of my homescreen use on Maemo 5. I had no need of the menu of apps upon apps stuck in grids. I can have them placed where I want, and access them from particular homescreens I remember. e;g; homescreen for work stuff, for games. It’s a little more than folders as you could even have relevant widgets (e.g. email widget next to note app and voice recorder shortcut).
I can’t wait for Official Belle. Like GSM Arena said yesterday, ““Maybe if it had come out earlier, it would have helped Symbian cling to its top spot in smartphone platforms””. Imagine if we got Belle last year?

The only thing that I miss is some kind of overview for all homescreens like on Android (at least HTC and SE) or with Offscreen Grid.
Anyway I’m really excited to get the official Belle update for my N8.
I totally agree.
I’d want
1) Pinch overview of the homescreens for quick switching
2) Scroll dragging to quickly scroll from one particular homescreen to another (not flick/flick/flick etc)
Alternatively, there’s this organization which is crazy confusing for some, but is only one swipe away from any 9 homescreens.

think they call it a gravity/anti gravity scroll or some such
8 homescreens and the maemo 5 style multitasking view…,would fit symbianOS v3.0 yea and the bookmarks like maemo 5 …..damn we miss maemo 5
i hope belle gets those features homescreen wise can’t wait for the successor of the n8-00 i hope it’s the mock up you posted from before
Ha, I never grow tired of reminiscing about Maemo 5.
That was too awesome. I guess Nokia wanted to get back to the top the super hard way.
On the N8 successor, hmm, not much I can say about that. Supposedly it’s awesome but who knows, huh. :p

I think its time we allowed Maemo5 to R.I.P. It was ahead of its time. I’ll cherish my N900 forever..
Talking about Symbian updates, I think the one after Belle will have more of the swipe from Meego-Harmattan.
I don’t think that’s possible. Cause HTC has already patent that for their sense 3.0… Though i have no idea why SPB 3D can use such similar UI styles though =/
That would make a lot of sense.. It still goes around once you get to the last home screen, but it can be annoying when you are trying to find a shortcut/widget.. I keep forgetting where I put things. That grid overview would help a lot.. however, I am not sure I will be using all 6, 4 is enough for me.
Is it possible in the version to add bookmarks as shortcut ?
Good question. Yes, I think you can right now add bookmarks to homescreen (normal S^3). But they all look like a web icon. Not sure about Belle. Not like say Maemo/webOS/WP/MeeGo that makes a tiny screenshot. Some websites are as good as/better than app versions for me.
adding a bookmark to the homescreen is not possible with this release, not sure about final belle on 701 700 etc

yes by default there are four, but you add two more
I recently got an update for Ovi Store: v2.12.043.
It’s called a beta and i got it via normal update functionality.

The description for the uodate says:
“This update is optional and needed only if Store stopped working after PS1 to Belle SW”
Hi can anyone tell me if they aslo get a symbian anna update 1/2 (1402kb) ? Ive already updated to anna. I also get the beta ovi store update. What should i do? Must i install these two updates?
Yes, that is the quick office, adobe reader, microsoft communicator, and .. new version of Social i think.. not sure. FOr some reason they all install on C: drive
With the simple hack as mentioned by you,I am using 6 homescreens for last 5 months on my N8 and reckon that it is amazing to have all your fav app and widgets on the homescreens.The N8 has remained completely stable even after the mod.
