Nokia N9 tests: boot up time, file transfer rate, app loading times and more…
Jay Kim/ShootSpeak tipped us of his new post, checking out the performance of the Nokia N9. It ‘s a great read, covering boot up time, file transfer time, App loading times, Camera Speed, Multitasking and Browser Benchmark.
http://shootspeak.com/2011/10/09/nokia-n9-performance-test-roundup/
In terms of camera speed, the details there are from the NokConv post, but he confirms it’s very fast. Writing speed via cable is very good, as is via WiFi N (20mb/s, 3.4mb/s). Some apps taking between 4-16 seconds to boot (16 being maps. You can see this in Michael’s video, here.)

4S will kill the N9 in performance.
Who will buy the N9? Why would you buy an inferior product when there is a MUCH superior one available?
I will! Let me know when that ‘superior’ one does not depend on the ‘i’ thing to operate.
Lol what can you say, “the masses are asses.” Unsurprisingly, the masses have an iPhone. Can’t wait for my N9 to arrive.
I have the N950, I click on Maps, splash screen comes up. I then swipe away and keep doing other thigns and Maps just works in the background. So I don’t wait for loading.
Oh how about this:
Me: Siri, guide me home.
Siri: Sorry you have not paid another 100 dollars to be able to do that. Would you like to spend another 100 dollars now?
siri isn’t available in all countries either, i think its just the USA for now
not available to Canada
siri is not fit for asian culture
Well, why should I use an inferior UI when something a lot more beautiful, simple, and logical exists. Never mind the MHz, I value practicality and beauty. There are several measures of an inferior product, you see?
You’re sounding like a Windows 3.1 shill and I’m sounding like the Macintosh fanboy circa 1991. And you’re the Apple fan! How whacked is that?!
your a dumbass 4s is lame you iclown lol
Actually not worth to reply to a troll.
Those who evaluate a product only by HW specs, show clearly their incompetence.
fuck you asshose…when i see your comments i rage in anger…go and moan about 4s in the apple forum you fucking dick…you deserve it
“Why would you buy an inferior product when there is a MUCH superior one available?”
Well of course I know iPhone 4S is inferior and N9 the much superior product. That’s exactly why I’m buying N9 and not iPhoney.
I still remember my disbrlief when you said you liked the n9, now it makes more sense. Finally got your paycheck huh?
4s? It looks and feels so dated!
Btw. Dont compare a feature phone os like ios with a high end os like harmattan!
go u a*s hole
superior in what ? like having 512MB RAM while there’s 1GB RAM in N9 ?
My Gf’s i4 doesn’t work anymore. Serious lag, random reboots. All started after announcement of i4s. Her 3gs did the same after apple announced i4. I smell foul play!!!
Not you, my irreconciliably and cluelessly trolling friend.
Why not buy your thing and just stop? Is it because you won’t actually buy it and you just like your big mouth to stand out from the haters’ crowd?
Why waste your time here when you already have somewhere better (i.e. the iPhone forums) to do it? Is it because there are things about the N9 which still appeal to you but you won’t recognise? (bigger screen, original OS?)
Still, I will answer your question. Maybe you just can’t comprehend that for some people, the underlying technology simply doesn’t matter. People who are content with what the software offers, who look for a certain unique aspect in their phone (UI for example) or who don’t mind not having the latest 20-core 4.8 GHz CPU (which will by January 2012 be obsolete).
Speaking of hardware, which until the last iPhone was objectively distinctive, I’m afraid the iCompany is already being left behind by the competition. Kudos to Samsung for that, and to the great AMOLED screens they sell to Nokia for the N8 for example.
Unfortunately for iFans, most of Apple’s achievements today can be traced back to a single person: Steve Jobs. It is him that was the visionary driving force within the company. So, to conclude, it now remains to be seen what further can Apple innovate. I wish them all the luck and the same to you, in spite of your continuous trolling without reason around this forum.
I agree, but Windows Phone beats them all in performance! Users should get Windows Phone instead of Iphone or N9.. Yep!
You would say that….
As you’ve clearly always been a MS supporter way above & beyond a Nokia one.
Shut up man. (Or iWoman)
hope there is successor to n9 from nokia, i dont mind another experiment harmattan phone! just keep it updating in term of harware spec and core os
LOL, I agree 100% on this. I hope Nokia always makes these experiment / technology showcase devices.
Make N9 “S” version with a faster SoC and HDMI output and it will beat even Nokia’s Mango phones. Oh, maybe they don’t want that. =
Well, we might see successors of the N9 with Swipe UI and based on Meltemi. Those will be called “feature phones” (somewhat below so called “Smartphones”). As discussed elsewhere this seems to be a desperation strategy, and all this naming and classification is to hide some major wrong decisions.
I will happily buy such “low end” phones and leave the Wonder Phones in the shelves until expiration date.
agreed
When you’re there downloading a million apps for the iSheep, I’ll be here using my mighty web browser. Exactly the same as my beautiful N900.
Actually, MicroB on N900 is better than N9′s browser in many regards. (virtual mouse, adobe flash, plug-in support, can upload files etc) But at least N9 web browser is a bit smoother. (I reckon it’s just due to having more RAM)
I wonder if there is any performance difference between 16GB and 64GB. As the 64GB has shown a faster USB transfer rate, I would expect that application loading is also a bit faster. For the maps, probably the data is compressed and CPU power is needed to unzip the map data, and this might be the limiting factor.
Is there anything like “top” to show processes and their CPU share, which we can watch during the app start?
There is top and even htop as well. I just tried top in terminal with 1 second interval and have launched the Maps app and quickly went back to terminal to see the cpu usage.
Maps process was using up to 92% and mostly above 85% until it finished launching. So it definitely does use a lot of CPU. A better SoC with dual core or if we can overclock the N9′s CPU like the N900, we should be able to get maybe up to 20% better loading times. (assuming we can get to at least 1.2GHz) I hope someone makes a kernel that supports overclocking on the N9. =)
I thought the platform security won’t allow such kernels…
Maps loading has already been halved according to dsmobile:
“dsmobile says:
October 9, 2011 at 7:06 pm
in PR1.1 maps apps loads up half of the time than in PR1.0
I guess there is some optimising left to do with the code.”

Seeing how Symbian^3′s Maps app has improved a lot over time, the one in N9 will improve too. Unless Ballme… err… Flop totally withdraws support from N9, so that N9 wouldn’t threaten WP7 so much.
Thanks for this quick answer, ShootSpeak!
Actually it does not disturb me that much. just curious what happens. So it’s not copying the data and unzipping, its really processing of map data.
It’s interesting that it takes more time, if many maps are installed. Does it mean all existing maps are loaded? Does not sound very clever. Last location should be used to pull map data, then the surrounding in the background.
“Writing speed via cable is very good, as is via WiFi N (20mb/s, 3.4mb/s).”
The WiFi speed measuring method (via sftp) has already been commented on Shootspeak comments not being the correct way to do it, because it creates a bottleneck:
“Niklas

It should be noted that sftp is not a very good tool to use if you’re trying to measure WiFi performance rather than sftp speeds specifically. The bottleneck is the encryption, I usually only get about 2-3 MB/s when using sftp from my laptop to my desktop, so 3 MB/s from the phone is actually quite good.
To better measure wireless network performance you might want to set up an NFS share or an FTP-server, then do the same thing with a laptop for comparison.

Just got my N9 in Perth WA Australia today. This thing is just unreal. Makes my N8 seem old and brick like.
ok… i have 1 request… how usable is the qwerty keyboard, i mean it must get annoying without a hw keyboard, does it have the option to switch between alphanumaric kb , qwerty & vice versa and also is there a split screen when typing? sorry for these questions… im a heavy typist bcoz i live on my phone…
The 3.9″ screen makes the keyboard much nicer than that of the N8 (even with belle) and split screen is everywhere. The hapic feed back is also a nice touch.
@Dan, what is reaction to the N9 in Australia, has it been positive ? is it something people are interested about ? Just saw an article where Dick Smith is selling it for $636, have they started slashing prices already ?
@BlessedMan Most outlets don’t even have stock yet. Telstra sent me an e-mail confirming avalibility but Telstra stores didn’t have any stock anywhere (this gave me the shits to be honest)
Allphone Morley received their stock Saturday morning, they only got 5 of which all had sold bar 1.
The Allphone’s store person told me they are selling well and he hadn’t even had a chance to try it out for him self. They aren’t able to get more stock untill next week. So from what I can see, the reaction is positive sofar.
Dan
Here in Aus we have full on media campaigns. Prime time commercial announcing what’s showing next is shown inside a N9 and it swipes over to the next program. (Nine Media Network.)
The campaign is to run until Dec
If you were an N900 user, it will get some time to get used to some of the benefits it provided. (such as changeable multi-function buttons, quicker ctrl+key combos, less typos etc)
N9′s vkb is excellent however when compared to other phones. It feels very tactile and is very accurate. Also, the use of click sound and vibration feedback is better than any other phone out there. However, some people may prefer swype style of input which N9 doesn’t have right now but PR1.1 update may bring that anyways.
BTW, it is better than iPhone4 by far due to bigger screen and better feedback. (i own iPhone4 also) It also feels better than the standard gingerbread keyboard on SGS2.
@ShootSpeak
thank you very much… i also got an email from a friend and he said that vkb is mind blowin… and now im uber excited… and im a user of the n900 but i left it ‘coz of the battery life… i switched to E7 ‘coz they said it had one of the best hkb… i was in the market but iphone or any android didnt appeal to me. i dont know why
@Dan
what is this “hapic feedback” ?
Are you sure about the N9 not having Swype?
According to this video and Nokias N9 specifications list it does(under applications) but I know you have one so maybe it didn’t make the final software…

If I’m going to use N9 the same way I’m using my N8 program startup time doesn’t really matter as I’m keeping most of the programs running in the background anyway. With N9 it’s also much less hassle as the task switcher is so much better and accessible i.e., faster to change task. Not that it’s bad on N8, just that the delay when pressing a button and waiting for the task switcher is too long sometimes.

hey,
i dont really like the calculator in n9! hope nokia can improve it!
