Video: Nokia N9 vs HTC Radar: MeeGo Harmattan vs Windows Phone Mango
Just after the Symbian Belle vs Windows Phone Mango post, (with Nokia 701 against the HTC Radar), Bas tipped in a video comparing that same WPMango HTC against the Nokia N9 MeeGo Harmattan phone. It’s interesting then to see in some ways the two OSes which Windows Phone is supposed to displace (perhaps with Apollo, (or WP Hero/Torpedo or whatever later versions would be called).
The video is in Russian, but it does have closed captions so you have subtitles with options for translation. It only comes up every now and again though so finding it difficult to do summary notes like in the previous post.

Cheers Bas for the tip!

Hi Jay, I tried to make better subtitiles, but it’s hard, cause the original file is up to 800 Mb in mp4
Maybe you can tip me with some app to make subtitles foк mp4 files?
Just in case, here is the text:
I would like to introduce you my video featuring WP7 Mango running on HTC Radar, and Meego Harmattan runnig on Nokia N9.
Let’s start with unlocking.
In Meego we have a double tap to unlock, plus traditional button.
Let’s start with our comparison.
Here is the phone app.
In Meego, the phone app starts where you left it – if it was a list of recent calls, it’s a list, etc.
In WP7 it’s always recent calls.
Let’s dial.
You can see how the calling feature is organized on both OS, it’s quite comparable, but I prefer bigger buttons.
In Meego you have an ability to manage your recent calls log.
Let’s see social activities in Meego and WP7.
As you can see, in Meego we have a list of icons, they don’t display any additional info, they ae not changing according to events.
In WP7 we have a list of tiles – their size is equal to a human thumb, so it’s easier to operate while walking. Tiles are active, they show information, they are animated.
In WP7 social activity is gathered around People Hub.
In Meego it is a timeline. It’s a pity, that updating of a timeline is not animated and there is no indication of update, except a little button going grey.
Note: both devices have the same wi-fi and the same accounts established.
Let’s open the same message on both devices. WP7 has downloaded some messages in advance.
In Meego there is an app launching, in WP7 we are still in People Hub. Still no updates for Meego. A list of contacts in WP7.
Let’s see the browser.
We have a discharge notice in Meego.
Photo apps comparison.
WP7 has a bonus of showing photos from Facebook, Skydrive like albums stored on device. Nothing similar on Meego though.
Going to the music player. WP7 – there is a recent list, a new list. List of artists. List of albums.
Also we have a music player controls on tapping volume controls
Mail app – Meego first. In WP7 we have different tiles for accounts (but you can shrink all accounts to one tile).
Working with attachments – big docx file (500+ kb), big xlsx file, pdf file).
In WP7 the document is opened before the full download, there is an option to navigate chapters, editing. In Meego we have only viewing.
Opening an xlsx file.
Opening video files. Meego – couldn’t open all the avi files. Both platforms resume video.
Weather forecasts.
Watching Marketplace vs Nokia Store. It’s a pity, that Meego lacks available apps (espescially useful ones).
Gaming – we have an Xbox Live in WP7, in Meego there is nothing similiar, just plain games.
Galaxy on Fire 2 and Rise of Glory on N9 and HTC Radar.
It’s not correct to compare graphics, these are different games.
That’s all, thanks! @jenjaman on twitter!
compare swipe to metro
No way! N9 is very better!
I wouldn’t say N9 is better, as we don’t know what the new Nokias will be like.
Certainly, both OS’ work well. If you love iOS then you will love N9. If you want something that is unique and want more integration, then Windows Phone is for you – BUT people buy phones for the hardware, not OS, therefore it depends what Nokia comes up with the next generation of phones.
“BUT people buy phones for the hardware”
Nokia would have done much better against the iPhone and early android devices if this was true. Fact is that it was this belief that the average consumer buy’s phones based on hardware spec and features that meant they got into a mess in the first place.
Don’t get me wrong, people do look for better hardware, but only when the software is usable and useful. Hardware wise, I don’t think the iPhone or G1 better than the Nokia N85 / N96 or E71 which i think were among nokias top phones at the time.
Can you please elaborate on the “more integration” part?
if nokia comes out with a very unique symbian theme for their wp7 mango phones, i might get one, but until then this TILES/metro thing is just not user friendly, its.. just.. boring & plain eww!
My POV: wp7..change your UX!!
Actualy, this is one of the best part of Windows Phone. Its UI is beautiful and unique and light years far from Android, Symbian or iOS UI.
But it’s a question of taste and opinion and I respect yours
Exactly! Actually Meego, Android and IOS are starting to rip off parts of Metro. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery : )
I don’t think there was ever any question that WP was better than MeeGo since it was chosen to replace it but still good to see how obviously better Windows Phone really is. Seems Nokia made the right choice
In my opinion, Windows Phone has not been chosen because it was obviously better than Meego.
As an OS, Meego is very good (maybe better than iOS and Android), but Windows Phone is a whole ecosystem and Nokia knew it and admitted than it will be very difficult to build such ecosystem around Meego.

(posted from my Nokia N97, heh

Sigh…. Jesse, Jesse, Jesse…
Still very sick in the head I see.
Can’t see the forest for the trees.
Poor video by very one of the very few remain pro WP fan boys.
Saw it over at WP Power User.
MeeGo/Harmattan more efficient OS than WP in terms of UI and usage of the phones resources.
It has REAL multi-tasking not a fast context switch like WP7.
Beside when WP users talk about the glory of tiles they are missing the point (that Apple have grasp).
Powerful technology should make things easier to use not add unnecessary abstract layers that interfere with what the user wants to accomplish.
That’s why Microsoft have to spend millions of dollars training sales people on how to use WP devices.
Good devices follow what the user does naturally not force them to take on abstract concepts that are not natural.
That is why iOS is so successful with the general public.
You don’t need a degree in computer science to operate an iPhone or a Nokia N9.

Gosh, man. Have you really used both? You are really speaking nonsense. It’s harder to use Meego when walking, it has worse keyboard, it lacs normal office app, it has almost same limitations like no interface changing, no flash etc.
Accusing of fanboism, you are really deep in to it yourself. Okay, you have your “true” multitasking, and the phone discharges very quickly when you leave Nokia Maps or another app in the background.
Also how do I see my appointments, people who wrote me on Meego? It has no notifications like Android, so just lock screen as it is in OS. I can’t call it very productive.
Just try to stop fanboism and focus on real apps and opportunities.
WP7 is absolutely easy to use and intuitive, Meego is definetely not so mature in terms of UI. Swipe is cool, but both systems use it: Meego uses it for app switching, WP7 uses it inside apps. In real life, swipe inside apps seems more practical.
Makes me wonder have YOU used them both either?
“In real life, swipe inside apps seems more practical.”
Because Swipe UI really grows on you, I can tell you that.
I am writing my impressions on actual use of both OS in real life. What do you mean “grows on you”. Sometimes it’s not cool to swype the app away, when you just need to come one step back. for example it happens in settings, with twitter etc. It’s not all roses.
+100.
I played with nokia n9 for more then 1 and half hour in nokia store in Dubai on my recent trip there. It is absolutely a mind-blowing beautiful looking phone which I liked more then iPhone 4s. The screen is gorgeous , some interfaces of the bult in applications are also super , clean and sleek . It beats android and even iOS really in all corners. But when it comes to windows 7 phone I can’t say that windows phone 7 is more practical and u get things done much faster then say a n9.
Aim not a wp7fanboy infact I have all apple products with me say from macbbok air to iPad 2 and a iMac. But I use wp7 because it’s just simple to use all things are fast and everything is practical everything is so well integrated in the os that it makes life easy.
I love nokia and for sure I will be the 1 to pick a nokia wp7 phone and if the sea ray is exactly like n9 the deal is done for me .
Have YOU really used both? I wouldn’t believe even if you said so.
Harmattan does use in-app swiping in many apps and interfaces — panning any list or canvas in an app is exactly that. Some apps also use it to show next item, such as a message in email, or a picture in gallery — or even language in virtual keyboard. In-app “tabs” are a bit different visual element (similar to iPhone), but you can select a tab directly without viewing the rest in between.
Meego does have notifications — indeed, a third of all (three) homescreens dedicated to them! — and they also show up on lockscreen. Have you actually seen an N9 in person?
At this point I can’t no longer believe so, and so I hardly believe that you’re able to make objective comparisons between the two; so any comparisons you make about keyboards or the ease of operation when walking are only the product of prejudice or bias. Coins have two sides: larger icons might make up for slightly easier tapping, but require awful lot more of scrolling in the process.
Real multitasking (no need for quotation marks here) does not equal to fast battery discharge — event-based applications use mostly only RAM when in the background — this requires no programming logic to achieve — while behaving in certain situations exactly as is expected — again, not requiring any special programming logic. Some apps might require additional resources to do their thing, but you really can’t have your cake and eat it too — either a Navi uses energy, or it doesn’t hold onto signal and track your position. Again, specialized backgrounding APIs buy us nothing except harder programming logic — i.e., a good opportunity for a developer to f*** up.
N9 is very much customizable for a power user — Windows Phone is not.

Coming from someone who actually has used the N9.
And applies knowledge, not emotion…
The sad part is that this Windows phone costs almost half the price of the N9 in my country so guess what people will go for.
I could argue all phones are like that though, but because we have been using icon based UI for a long time we have gotten used to that concept rather than the Metro UI one.
Cut the BS bro. That is a whole lot of fud you are spreading. I suggest go and try WP7 before you make that kind of comments. It is one of the easiest, functional and smoothest experiences out there right now. People just have to try it before making any judgements.
I’m not a MS fan (own 2 macs 1 android phone and 1 N9)
It seems there is just too much emotions involved with peoples opinions.
+100000
I have to agree with you on that one
If you are so impartial/objective, what are your criticisms of WP?
Considering this video review focused on WP positive aspects, & very few of Harmattan’s.
And in fact, was factually wrong in quite a few areas.
Being an N9 owner, I’d have thought you’d be upset by that?
Too much animation on windows phone, I hope there is a way to turn them off
This seems to be a review by WP7 fan.
That comment about N9 “only having static icons” is especially pretty pointless because of the Events homescreen.
Events homescreen beats every Live Tile notification we’ve seen so far 10-0.
you absolutely right saying “This seems to be a review by WP7 fan”
so, this comparision is not objective
Since most people can’t read or speak russian that come here it isn’t really relevant what the reviewer thinks. Even when it was in english, would it be relevant what someone else thinks?
What is relevant is that people can see both WP and the N9 side by side and come to their own conclusions. One may like the N9 and someone else will probably like WP. Personally I tend to prefer WP for several reasons. Do I hate the N9 because of that? No, it’s just not the device for me, but I understand some people will like what it has to offer though.
+100000 you are right on there
@Peter L…If you look at his People Hub, you will see that he is part of the Maemo World community. In addition, most of his YouTube videos involve Symbian devices.
So, he’s more an appreciator or adaptor to the changes at Nokia and has familiarized himself with Nokia’s primary OS, Windows Phone. And perhaps he is ‘now’ a fan of WP after using it
What difference does it make? You can see both OS side by side, yoг can simply ignore any comments. But the problem is that you tend to believe, not to know. You have a concept of what is practical and what is not in your mind, it’s not an opinion based of fair use of both OS. So you prefer to believe your concept, reather than letting other information into your mind.
WP7 seems quite practical in real life, it’s easy to operate with tiles, because their size is adopted to a thumb, it uses swipe gesture not less than Meego, it has more convinient keyboard.
Both OS are good, but WP7 has some advantages in functions and in use in real life, not just exploring interface in the shop.
I am speaking beyond the wow factor, just plain using for the same tasks.
I fell like this has to be repeated here
Oh Nokia fanboys nothing pleases you right ?!?!?!?
Price it too high they will say Elop is trying to kill Nokia, price it too low they will say Nokia is trying to kill Nokia.
Seriously every little decision taken by Elop is seen as somehow as a way of destroying Nokia.
I am getting bored with Nokia fanboys such a childish bunch off people in fact I am getting bored off fanboys in general of any brand, seriously the amount of time you guys spend defending and slating an OS could have been spent actually doing something worthwhile, at the end of the day these devices are supposed to help us with everyday tasks and there is no denying whatever OS you choose they do that.
The tiny differences you guys are trying proclaim as “advantages” or “disadvantages” are so minimal and frankly hilarious.
Everyone has different tastes and uses there is no point of trying to “convince” something is worse because you haven’t got it.
Seriously people stop being childish you guys are better than this
right rant over
Wait, what?
The only two instances of “Elop” that I can find in this article or the comments ARE FROM YOU.
Elop is just an example its technology in general
These days blogs are just full of comments of people insulting each other on why their gadget is better than someone else’s and unfortunately mynokiablog has become like it.
Well, since WP fanboys invaded MNB, then that’s the reason why…
It was a bit peaceful here before…
@ssdh…There are very few WP fans that visit this site; this site is populated and visited primarily by Meego/Symbian fans, and Stephen Elop haters. I’d wager to say that the few WP fans that visit this site are interest to learn about Nokia, because Nokia is really what we feel will compliment WP more than any other oem out there. And there are many WP fans eargerly awaiting Nokia WP devices
This is a Nokia site, and covers all things Nokia. I am a WP OS fan, and I want to know as much about Nokia as possible; this site has been tantamount in that I’ve been able to get a lot of information about Nokia and their practices from years past. And given the plethora of information that this site offers, I will continue to be a regular visitor.
I don’t hate Symbian, nor any of the other OSes Nokia has used; I own a N8 as well. But the N8 is a stopgap until the Nokia WP devices are released.
I’d hardly call the handful of WP fans that visit this site an ‘invasion’.
I agree that Symbian is a bit long in the tooth.
MeeGo / Harmattan wasa little late to the market.
But to say that WP7 has been any sort of success is pushing reality too far.
It doesn’t matter what is said in the virtual word the only thing that matters is sales.
Now I wonder if you can help me here?
HOW MANY WP7 WERE BOUGHT BUY END USERS???
Yeah thought so . .
That is what angers us “Nokia Fanboys”.
Why did Elop pick a failed OS?
By the way it looks like Mango is another prime example of MS’s good work (missing keyboards, crashing apps, etc)
What will be the difference between Nokia, Samsung, Moto… if Elop picked the successful OS (Android)?
Nokia will be just another Android OEM, with different UI and with updates coming months or years after Google releases them.
I’m not trolling on Android, just saying that it’s better for a giant like Nokia to choose another OS and invest on it (and MS will help them on that).
Nokia fanboys are just bigots.. dont wast your time on these fools.. You will not win
Bigots are made, not born…
we are not sheeps of uncle sam
“Price it too high they will say Elop is trying to kill Nokia, price it too low they will say Nokia is trying to kill Nokia.”
….WTF is up with this statement? I mean who in their right mind has ever said that a Nokia phone is “too low”? Way to make sense?
You clearly haven’t read enough comments on here to understand if you do you will…….. trust me
N9 looks great! shame the camera isnt up to par with the N8
I am due to upgrade from my iphone 3g and I am looking at the N9 – The best think I love about it is the hardware.
I buy phones based on the quality of the hardware, not the OS like some people, but here’s my 2 pennies worth:
N9 OS is very similar to iphone ios. eg: the grid of icons and the way information is presented: on a sheet with buttons.
Apps are also very important aswell – very app centric.
Besides the nice way the swipe function works, there’s not much that’s different that we haven’t seen in iOS.
Windows Phone – The OS looks very stylised – I think everyone would agree some thought has been made to make different pages and screens and apps look consistent. contrast that with iOS where it can be quite confusing shifting between apps and OS as there is no set design language. Don’t even talk about Android! lol.
I like the transitions and animations as you move from screen to screen – I can see how people have said it’s a ‘joy to use’.
Lack of screen-estate that are a pre-requisite for all mobile devices has always been a problem, but the large text and Tiles to convey information is a very good idea.
Apple tends to treat iphone like a PC desktop. Unfortunately, a mobile device is not a PC, and will suffer if small icons, small text, small buttons are crammed together on one screen. Larger is better and much more space between is required.
One thing I am really impressed is how many of the things you would get on a separate app AND/OR phone function are integrated into the OS.
For example Facebook, Windows Live, Twitter, LinkedIN and contacts are aggregated together. It looks quite organised aswell –
Anyway, If you love iOS and want something similar, then I would get the N9. If you want something that is unique from the competition and does things differently then I would wait for the new Nokias.
I agree that WP7 is different and that the tiles are an interesting concept.
But there are many fancy designers trends applied there that scream out wrong in the WP, starting with the tiles they are off center, unbalancing the entire UI, looks play wrong specially wen the hardware is very symmetric…
The pages hint’s… the way WP suggests “there is more on the side” by showing or clipping parts of the current page just looks wrong, no mater how informative it is, it shows something sliced on screen.
I fear that the Typography based design will never make the UI extremely popular, its a designers thing and mostly only designers would appreciate it.
Also the 3D like animations are not great to make the phone appealing to a large percentage of the population, 3d mental maps are way more complex than simple 2D or information maps..
And I guess the underwhelming sales number in WP show just that.
Hate over the top eye candy in WP and love the simplicity of Harmattan.
Funny that everyone else things that Metro UI is one of the simplest UI’s and that iOS has the most eye candy.
got today my n9! it’s a great device!!!!
Seems these comments have Ups and Downs then the climax and conclusion!
I don’t know if I’m going to love WP7 because it just looks like a bunch of tiles, too much information in it, and every gesture is just pure animation to hide delays.
One more thing! Meego is not quite that impressive because it just cope itself to what the market is already offering. A high-priced device for a less featured unit (Swipe is the best it has, nothing follows).
Still, I love Nokia on how they are keeping their market in the Philippines. Symbian is still rocking here because of T9 alphanumeric, apps, and easy editing of APNs and modified apps.
It’s really a nice and useful piece of information. I am glad that you just shared this useful information with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thanks for sharing.
My brother recommended I may like this website. He used to be entirely right. This put up actually made my day. You cann’t believe simply how a lot time I had spent for this info! Thank you!
