Videos: Nokia Lumia 800 Sunlight/Outdoor visibility

| October 31, 2011 | 23 Replies

This was one of the things you asked us to try out. During Nokia World event days, it was pretty cloudy and even raining on the second day so I couldn’t really test the screen outdoors.

On the Friday we were filming some 800 videos (for Nokia YouTube) it was wonderfully sunny. And we got even closer to the sun by jumping on the London Eye.

As you can see by the reflection blob of the sun, it was an extremely sunny day. You can even see in the video us pointing at the sun directly above. I couldn’t see it so much on N8′s screen but the 800 was perfectly visible. It’s particularly useful when using the viewfinder as your subject does not disappear and vanish from having an inferior display. BTW image above is a screenshot from video (produced by N8). We’ll be sharing some more videos from Nokia World recorded by that (it was such a trooper. I am blown away AGAIN by the quality of the video it produced, audio too)

Since most of my media is on my mac and I put all my content there (and now unable to transfer back to the card) I had to use it to process my video. I thought I might as well give one of the themed video editing things a go. I won’t make another one like this, promise. Will just upload directly, and shrink if possible (As our virginmedia upload speed is so dire).

Oh, currently uploading unedited version. It shows it off better.

Jay can you tells how does the lumia 800 screen compares to super amoled or super amoled plus and scl . . And does the lumia has a gorilla glass ?

  2. Raja says:

By the way loved your jay Montana lol movie seriuosly very dramatic and nice hope to see more videos of the lumia are they coming ? And hope to see some test shots of the camera also .

Hi. Yes, just testing out iMovie in the process. The unedited version should be there. (The iMovie one is a collection of other screen tests)

Yes we have plenty more stock footage from Nokia World that didn’t make it due to the schedule we had and the slow internet. It was so full-on that on the second and third nights I couldn’t help but just crash into bed.

Was brightness set to auto or high? It looks good either way, but just curious.

    • Jay Montano says:

I think auto here, though I did set it to full at one stage. Not sure when. Either way the possibility is there to make it completely visible in sunlight.

  4. Raja says:

There is a discussion going on wpcentral.com that the glass is not gorilla as it’s not mentioned on the spec page.

    • Oh Hei says:

The product page indicates that it is not Gorilla Glass; this is probably how they were able to keep the cost of the device more affordable. The N9 product page states scratch resistance Gorilla Glass, and this technology most likely was priced into the cost of the device.

Regardless, the Lumia screen is wonderful, and most will take care of their device and try to minimize scratches to the screen and body, or use a means of protection from such.

    • Hypnopottamus says:

Many devices spec pages neglect to mention the presence of gorilla glass. The Lumia DOES have gorilla glass. See the official Corning gorilla glass product page here:

Nice. Even though you can still see the reflection (something the Matte E62 didn’t do), it’s very obvious how clear this is under direct sunlight. Would also like to see how the Lumia 710 Clear Black TFT does.

I know Nokia advertises it a little, but they really should be pushing this as it’s a strong advantage of their product portfolio.

  7. Deathcoder says:

Screen looks visible most of the times hmm great work by nokia

  8. Netro says:

WTF, a fullscreen ad pops up in the middle of the video?!

    • Jay Montano says:

Sorry i don’t know where that came from. was it from youtube or adbrite? I specifically specified with the latter to have none of this, nor auto play video or sound. in youtube, i didn’t even know they had ads. they weren’t submitted for revenue sharing (it’s easier to click no than having to do their little ad revenue test)

  9. Sun Down says:

Could you compare this to the Nokia X7 Jay?
