Video: Awesome looking CloudGPS 0.6.4 demoed on Nokia N9 (free at Nokia Store)

| December 4, 2011 | 42 Replies

Check out this awesome looking map app on the Nokia N9. This is CloudGPS v0.6.4. Very impressive stuff.

Seems you can control it by accelerometer and touch. The maps looks very smooth and the bouncing icons that kind of slide in one after another. Amazing :)

What’s even more amazing is that this isn’t some obscure hack or install. It’s at Nokia Store and it’s Free :)

Intuitive and very smooth maps with great user experience. Supports tile based maps such as OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, Google Satellite, Virtual Earth and others.

Allows for searching for adresses and POI and routing to destination using CloudMade and Google services.

Leverages hardware features like: OpenGL ES, multitouch, GPS, compass and accelerometer.

nice looking app and most importantly really smooth

now port it to lumia 800 lol

  2. iphone wannabe - nokia lumia 800 says:

its ui is similar to maemo ui, why the fuck there is cross sign and menu button at the top for n9?

  3. nabs says:

Yeah!! so smooth. If only they did that to the whole UI.

    • Jay Montano says:

The whole of the N9 looks smooth to me though not used it extensively enough to give full verdict. What parts are you having problems with?

      • nabs says:

I mean the animation of the buttons. It looks good. I know it’s a trivial thing, but sometimes the eye-candy transition and animation makes me feel they are alive. And, yes sometimes it’s boring. Anyway, good app.

        • Nrde says:

I would get tired to that kind of “smooth” if it was OS wide.

The problem with cloud GPS is that it can’t keep up with tile loading over 3G connection at highway speeds.

But it looks really excellent anyways.

It would be nice to have opengl acceleration to the inbuilt Nokia maps also…

“What’s even more amazing is that this isn’t some obscure hack or install. It’s at Nokia Store and it’s Free”

Sure, cause it isn’t on Windows Phone :P

    • Jay Montano says:

I don’t get the connection you’re bringing up.

      • Patata says:

Ok, then just show something similar for Windows Phone, downloaded from the marketplace ;)

        • Jay Montano says:

Why? To make you feel better because you somehow think you’ve one upped Windows Phone though I never brought it up in the post?

Because the last thing you want to to is show off in terms of impressive looking apps.

You do know marketplace is open and you can check things out for yourself right?

Speaking of smooth maps apps with satellite view, Bing maps is available out of the box and is integrated with the phone experience.

The only reason I said, “this isn’t some obscure hack or install” was due to previous experience of alternate (but cool looking) mapping stuff on my N900. Not sure why you’re so touchy always bringing WP or attacking any Windows related things at any given opportunity.

          • Patata says:

Maybe cause Nokia went from something like this to something totally restricted like Windows Phone? We won’t see such things on wp anymore. Bing Maps doesn’t count, since this isn’t a third party app ;)

            • Jay Montano says:

lolol what? You ask for something equivalent, I tell you Bing maps, but that doesn’t count?

You remind me of the person that said Kindle app was useless (because it’s on WP) even though there was a huge petition asking for Kindle app for Symbian from tons of Symbian users? Friends on Android and iPhone love the Kindle app and find it useful. But it seems because it’s not on Symbian or N9 it’s useless.

I guess, we should settle on the fact that anything WP or non N9/Symbian sucks. This way we can save ourselves a lot of time typing the same things over and over again.

Speaking of restrictions, hacks and stuff, I’m sure this is a figment of my imagination too:

              • Patata says:

“lolol what? You ask for something equivalent, I tell you Bing maps, but that doesn’t count?”

Something equivalent by an individual developer applying it successful to the windows marketplace and not an app my MS themself ;)

                • Jay Montano says:

Well who knows. Just because it isn’t there doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Same applies to N9 – just because I don’t see certain apps for N9 doesn’t mean N9 can’t do it. It just needs developer interest to come decide to do something like this with it.

There are lots of other mapping solutions on Windows Phones.

                  • MDF says:

gmaps on wp7 is great with many options

                  • troll says:

btw, i sincerely believe that you are becoming very jaded over the constant comments and negativity regarding wp, i really suggest you take a break from bloging like andre did ( or did he leave? =x)

let the rest of your crew take over for a while ;D

                    • aTom says:

Nah, Jay can’t take a break. haha He’s too good and fair, but I hope he doesn’t get high blood pressure from these comments.

Before getting the N9 I was a little worried about how professional future N9 apps would look. I heard an old nokia blogger complaining about the N900 community producing apps for hackers only with little style or usability. Fortunately, that prediction was completely off for the N9.

                    • fghdfdfgh says:

Jay can’t take a break. Microsoft does not pay him for breaks, but for propaganda. – signed, your friendly neighbourhood asshole

He’s too young to have high bp over such things just now. Check back in 10 years though.

I do hope though that he doesn’t take our flamewars personally.

                • troll says:

you can go find it here, one of the best wp apps there is ;) ;) ;)

  5. Jed Tylman says:

    Looks slick.
    I want some.

  6. stylinred says:

looks nice but i see “google” written in there eyuk :)

    • Jay Montano says:

I just want to see the freaking Nokia Maps 3D on a Nokia phone. You just know since Apple bought the company behind it they’re just gonna be like “hey look, we invented this. We’re better than you all over again”.

  7. James says:

Yeah saw it a while back at FMC…
Has huge potential, very impressive for basically a one man effort.

  8. SLAYER says:

how can they make it that smooth, but the native maps (on any platform) is slow?

could it be that nokia doesn’t use hardware acceleration on map apps to save battery?

    • Jay Montano says:

Maybe the same way N8 has Nokia Social produced by Nokia developers whilst Jan Ole on his own can make Gravity.

    • Guest says:

HW/GPU acceleration saves battery! Everything there is to GPUs, is that it’s more energy efficient in graphics rendering than a CPU.

  9. MDF says:

that social needs to die in a slow painful death lol

  10. Lloydo says:

WOW how smooth was the compass rotation part at the end!?!?!?

  11. Thepistol says:

I was a big fan of latitude,is there anyway to get latitude on this app or has anybodygot suggestions of getting it on the n9.
