Videos: Smoked by Windows Phone, Ben the PC guy’s CES Challenge
Ben the PC Guy set about a challenge of performing certain tasks on his Windows Phones against competitor phones. If they win, they get $100. If they lose, they have to accept defeat and admit to being smoked by Windows Phone. They have the option of swapping their phone for a new Windows Phone. Oddly not a Nokia Lumia 900. :s
I think what they’re highlighting here is that most things require less steps. Less things buried in menus or system wide integration etc. From those tests WP has it done quite well.
There’s quite a few videos.

I really enjoyed following Ben during CES, actually always. One of my favorite bloggers out there! He is definitely one of the best things going in the Windows Phone media/marketing department!
And the idea itself was awesome, got a lot of buzz on twitter especially.
you just got smoked
I’ve got $1000 that says your brand new Windows Phone cannot do at all what my N900 can. -_-
that’s not the point of the video.
I know… But what good would it do if WP can do some things faster than other platforms, when it cannot do what I need at all?
The point of the video (or the ‘competition’) is to promote WP plain and simple. Kudos for the idea, but it just doesn’t work for me…
I think the idea of CES is to promote and show off products
Ben was simply showcasing the ease in which you can do everyday tasks – this type of functionality might be of interest to those who feel that their current OS is cumbersome, or to those feature phone users who are gun shy about moving to a smartphone.
All in all, this was a good, and fun showcase of WP
Nokia fail….>XD no Nokia phone fuck windows
Wow. What an intelligent and relevant comment.
1. What windows has to do with this? It was his choice not to use a nokia.
2. In the second-from-last video he introduced Lumia 710.
3. I think everyone already knows that you hate MS, so you don’t need to repeat it every single f****** time.
Just curious, do you think there were any instances that he had to pay out the $100?
Yes, three times he paid out. Final Tally I believe was 30 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie! Which is a pretty great result.
just watched all the videos, i realised there were instances.
Speed isnt everything..
pick the most cheep basic simple nokia phone and test how fast you can make it to redial, and compare it to the most fast Wp phone in the universe, it will be pretty funny.
Sad would be if the windows phone was not faster than the others in doing anything…
For example, multitasking is way faster and convenient on the N9. Or reading your teewt/facebook feeds…
Each phone will have its strengths… and things that are faster to reach in the UI because those things got front row in the said UI.
Also its pretty easy to notice that he had way better Internet reception and that something that is easy to prepare in advance, specially at such events were the volume of traffic is gigantic.
I’d have done the same , bring a cheap phone with button, and anyone could beat the pants off ben. oh, but there would be a ton of ifs and buts I suppose. these kinds of contests are always there to attract attention, marketing buzz, what else. not a real contest of any kind
Actually part of the rules is both phones had to be connected to the same internet connection. They were both using a wireless connection. They also limited most tasks to be when the phone was back to being responsive. Only one person felt the test wasn’t fair and complained, Ben redid the challenge the next day for that person.
The rules of the contest were also decided upon by both users before it started.
As for the N9, I don’t think anyone challenged him so either they were afraid or didn’t think they could win. I know a ton of people had them there because the room was filled with reviewers that have stated they bought them.
Love it!
are you saying multitasking on the wp is faster than the N9??? is that what you are saying?
As I said each phone can do some things faster than the other specialy if we are talking about the amount of menus-clicks it takes you to do a task… depends how deep in the UI is the final click is.
It is common sense to know that not all of them can be just one click away…
Example lunching music app on the n9 is swipe to apps click, on iphone click to menu click, on windows phone swipe to apps, flick, click.
depends…
“The rules of the contest were also decided upon by both users before it started.” OK if you prepare yourself well enough you can sudgets things to your opponent you know your opponent thinks he does really fast, but you know you do its faster…that is fairly obvious in one video were some guy sudgest taking a picture on iphone 4s and posting in twitter or facebook the guy already knew he was probably was going to lose, and he was incredibly fast using the phone, so its pretty obvious he practiced in advance some of the use cases he would suggests.
The fact that if you lost you got a free htc phone helped keep people happy no?
HTC rocks,…
Now we see WP7 is on par with the other smartphone OS. When can we see the leapfrog?
30 to 3 isn’t on par haha..
I like this Ben the PC Guy! This was a good little challenge to test the efficiency of doing common everyday tasks; and a win-win for WP – if Ben loses, he’s out of $100 but he plants a WP seed and gets to demo WP to those who may otherwise not be aware of it; if the challenger loses, then they get a free WP. And for those saying that they will just sell the WP on eBay, that’s OK too because the WP device will still be utilized by someone
I should be getting a Lumia 710 by the end of January. I will have then owned Nokia devices with S40, S60 3rd, S60 5th, S^3/Anna/Belle, Maemo5 and then WP7. If I was single and without kids….I would have Meego Harmattan by now….
I *Plan* on writing and posting a detailed review of the 710 on MNB…*Plan*
what do kids have to do with the OS…my son is three and he can use symbian fine he’s been using my n8 for the past year and he gets better and better and using the phone
your logic is invalid buddy
You are even worse than a troll, with a lack of understanding, you know. He meant that he would have brought the N9 if he didn’t have a family to feed.
*shakes head*
I like how you cant start the camera by pressing the HW camera button even when the device is locked.
Belle had that feature in beta stages but got removed. (people on dailymobile actually hated that and thought it was a bug, and I was like WTF is wrong with you..)
