Nokia N8 vs iPhone 4S vs SGSII: Nokia N8 is still the king of image quality

| February 5, 2012 | 41 Replies

Another great post at theycallthislife.net, here comparing eras of  the Nokia N8 against the Samsung Galaxy SII and Apple iPhone 4S.

 http://theycallthislife.net/post/16871288699/image-quality-of-the-the-nokia-n8-apple-iphone

From colour accuracy, to detail, exposure – for the best image quality, Nokia N8 is still kicking ass in 2012. Go check out that link above for a detailed analysis of the N8′s cam in comparison to SGSII and 4S.

Cheers Paul for the tip!

    BEST FRIGGIN 600CAD i’ve ever spent…

  2. reptile says:

That silver one looks pretty nice.. Maybe I should have bought that one instead of the dark grey…

    • Paul Grenfell says:

      I had a Silver one..looks superb..
Am so waiting for its successor..I hope its not too far away, i dont want anything else..Dont want WP

    • stylinred says:

i wanted a blue one, but when i saw the silver one (thats whats available @ Rogers in Canada) i thought it was great and wanted it too

but i could only find the black one for sale unlocked in the UK (ordered from the uk for a MIF one)

    • Michael says:

Admittedly I kinda wish I had bought a black one … When they start shipping with Belle, I’m gonna spring on one ;)

    • Jonjon says:

Dark grey is the best color IMO. It matches any color of my outfit and it just looks very classy and expensive especially when light strikes the shiny detail around the volume and camera keys. Silver white is so Kodak 2004.

  3. stylinred says:

he also compared the N8 to a Canon 40D ;) in his latest post

    • Michael says:

I posted that, and am going to leave it up … But I kinda don’t want people to see it. It makes it look like the N8 renders things more “neutral” than the 40d, which may be true for a straight jpeg export from the Canon – but those RAW files blow away ANYTHING the N8 can output. I fear though that too many people won’t get that, and just start saying the N8 is way better than it really is.

That said, you rule for actually reading my site! Thanks!

Sorry, the antispam is catching non spam for some reason. I’m blaming the douchebags who try to get backlinks from here by posting their generic ‘thankyou for your content, can i get your rss’ comments that might have made one of the words in your link get associated as spam.

In future, bitly might be a good option or email tips[at]mynokiablog.com.

Cheers and sorry for the inconvenience.

  5. arts says:

maybe its because i run a hacked belle, my colour reproduction is always bad for white and yellow. Do you guys know how to fix it?

  6. Weirdfisher says:

the iphone is quite nice too…

    • Michael says:

It’s a solid 75% of the N8, but you’re clearly losing information in the processing algorithm. Like I said in the conclusion, iPhone is AWESOME for apps, and the camera on the 4s makes you feel like a little less of a schmuck for buying one…. But the N8 is still far superior in terms of image quality, especially if you’re super critical.

  7. lordstar says:

Now imagine the n8 successor with a polished ui, nokia carla, and superior imaging capabilities. Awesome phone. I’m guessing it won’t get much support from Nokia as it is not running windows phone.

    • Mazze says:

…and the N8 browser, a spotify-like music subscription service from Nokia smoothly integrated into the OS’s default music player and swipe. That would make a perfect phone for me. Well, and NFC of course (but that’s already been confirmed by the rumors on this blog).

  8. zymo says:

i am eager to see what the successor is capable of. BTW: There seems to be some HD Vidoes made by an Nokia 803 over at http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/fEst6FrhcgY (Chinese).

  9. daRksiDe says:

there is no point in these comparisons….the thing is, is only n8 is having carl zeiss optics…..so is a xperia neo wz having the same lens, it would also have had the same quality or more than that of n8.

    • Michael says:

Pardon my language, but just saying the N8 has a “Zeiss lens” means jack shit. Most Zeiss lenses I’ve even encountered are fairly mediocre, and this is no exception. N8 has LOTS of barrel distortion, and actually the iPhone is better corrected in this respect because it’s lens is more of a corrected, standard focal length.

Oh, and to your point of “Zeiss lenses” – then how come the Sony X10 had such a god awful camera? I had one of those for six months until I couldn’t take it anymore the camera (and firmware) was that bad.

  10. RiderX10 says:

N8 rocks in camera department only….video recording is just above average but sound in recorded video is way below average compared to most of modern phones

    • Paul says:

The N8 Cam rocks because of the bigger chip size of the photochip (good for exposion, contrast and less noise) and a it’s more sophisticated postprocessing of the image.

When it comes to video recordind it has still the advantage of the bigger chip size. So it can realize a better exposition, contras and less noise, even it has “only” 720p.

    • Alex Kerr says:

Not true. Video recording significantly better than other phones, audio recording FAR better than anything else out there. I have seen SO many references to this over time.

All I want is honesty and fairness here. Yes – N8 + Anna has inferior user interface to Android or iPhone. Accepted (I’m an N8 owner by the way). But equally N8 camera is VASTLY superior to anything else out there.

Audio recording on the N8 leaves everything else in the dust. And it is NOT just the Carl Zeiss lens by a long way, it is the only camera system, and a lot to do with the huge amount of work Damien Dinning’s team put into the camera firmware, algorithm tweaking and so on.

I will give credit to iPhone and Android where credit is due, and owners of those devices should be honest enough to give credit to Nokia and the N8 where that is due.

Incidentally, N8 video at 720p easily beats any 1080p recording out there. The quality is SO much better. Another point worth noting is many (all?) of the 1080p phones can’t output that hires video. You plug an N8 in and you get full HD with Dolby Surround 5.1 (only phone in the world that has full Dolby).

Also, I’d love to see someone try and spot the difference on a 3 – 4 inch screen between 720p and 1080p! ;-) Not possible…

  11. Rollindice says:

Never regretted buying the N8, will soon be having official Belle release, can’t wait! Long Live Nokia, superb in quality and build!

  12. Prashant says:

I agree that N8 represents colors accurately and captures more details BUT photography aside, I would prefer to marry the SGS2 girl :-p

    • Alex Kerr says:

That was from Feb last year – a year ago! Long since fixed and affected only a few phones. Next!

      • fghdfdfgh says:

        Hahaha.

I have seen at least 10 N8′s and C7′s and only TWO of them did not have this issue. So almost all are affected. What is even worse is that Nokia Care Point can not fix it because new parts they have are also affected. Problem still exists. From over year Nokia is not able to fix it and they continue to sell phones with faulty displays.

        • Paid M$ Troll says:

i can testify to that. mine still do. and i bought mine post feb11, which should have gave them plenty of time to fix that problem.

  13. molbal says:

I’m glad I still have that device. :)

  14. benzas says:

    i have n8 and sgs2,
the only 2 reasons why i am using sgs2 is bigger screen, and larger app store.

it is impossible to compare n8 camera and sgs2 . it is like compare bmw5M 2009 and bmw5 1997

  15. dss says:

I’ve been using for my primary camera for over a year now.. very happy. Its amazing what they managed to achieve with the N8.. thank you Nokia!

  16. Rex says:

N8 is still going strong, better then any $300 digicam… already beaten SGS II while clicking at night time…

  17. KraiT says:

Lmao! You think the N8 has an odinary Carl Zeis lens? The camera was specially developed for Nokia with Nokia’s imaging patent technologies by Carl Zeis Optics, just like Nokia Edof cams, so your arguement is baseless! Even if Sony puts a Carl Zeis lens on it’s phone, it won’t come close to an N8.
