Nokia Belle FP1 is Nokia Carla! (v112 with Nokia Browser 8.2) – so Carla for 603, 700, 701.

I’ve seen some people mention Nokia Belle FP1 as Carla yesterday (I think dsmobile was one) but here you can see that’s the case. Whilst not officially regarded as Carla, the details we have read in the past suggest it’s pretty much that.

In earlier reports, we saw Carla as v112, with the Nokia Browser, 8.2.

The image above is just from the previous post by Ali, an excellent clear hands on tour of “Nokia Belle FP1″. I’m actually postponing another post as it’s much better and concentrates more on the UI which a lot seem to have ignored (and thinking it’s just plain old Symbian, but it’s quite nice and fluid if you take a look). There’s more widgets, better animation, more consistency, different design (e.g. multitasking).

Connecting more dots, the Nokia 603, 700 and 701 will therefore also get Nokia Carla.

But as Ali said, there’s a lot still that might/could change and there are things Nokia is still improving.

What was the original schedule regarding Carla? Could this be the first time for years that they are ahead of schedule?!?

Btw. mr Savander says in the Finnish business newspaper Kauppalehti that “it would be foolish to let go of Symbian”. Havent yet read through the whole news article though.

I hope that it means that it would be foolish to give away own independet high end development. Just imagine the case, if MS would have been the sole smartphone platform partner for Nokia during the 5 years it took to develop Pureview. What has happend during that period?

  2. ardit says:

why dont you get a video of the web on pure 808

  3. meh says:

Jay, you should really start reloading your own blog more often. :D

    • meh says:

nevermind I guess this is different news. :)

      • Jay Montano says:

Yes, Ali is talking about Belle FP1 features, I’m just letting folks know that Belle FP1 is Carla. There has been so much going on today that the only way to make certain info better known is to make a separate post.

        • Matthew says:

Now we know that Belle Feature Pack 1 is not Carla as apparently there is a Feature Pack 2 and then there were screen shot leaks of Nokia Carla.

  4. Swapz says:

I’ll be very satisfied I’d they even provide a lite version for Symbian^3 batch.

    • munchen says:

the n8 won’t get belle fp1 or carla due to insufficient rom. all the other symbian^3 phones will get it though since they have ample rom to host the software.

  5. mahindar says:

    Here the model is N00

  6. upal says:

If belle FP1 is carla Then why don’t they call it Straight Carla .. Its confusing . Personally i think belle fp1 and carla are different.

  7. Luisito says:

I Think that this FP1 is just cosmetic, first gen Symbian 3 devices are fine without it, but it those changes affect the behaviout and make more easy the day to day operation, I really will miss it, waiting more info about this FP1 thing (ahh… I remenbbe my E71 pre-FP1, and Nokia 5320 FP2, good devices…)

  8. SLAYER says:

on the surface you might think “oh it looks exactly like belle” but from the video Ali posted all apps are re-written in Qt components. this is technically a bigger change than moving from anna to belle.

    so yes this is carla

    • SLAYER says:

I take that back. the only apps that are completely changed are the camera, gallery and the browser. although some components are replaced with their qt counterpart throughout the UI it’s not the change I was waiting for. it defiantly feels more of a feature pack than a full fledged release.
who knows, maybe first gen phones could get parts of it.

  9. kostas says:

Do you know if the Nokia N8 will get the Carla update?

  10. Nfan says:

A little off-topic but want to inform your readers that Opera Mobile version 12 is now available for Symbian(perhaps the Belle compatible version).

  11. st7761 says:

    belle fp1=carla
    belle fp2=donna

    ??

  12. FireDragon says:

I am going off-topic here but I have a theory about the current 808 design. I could be totally wrong but I have to share it.

I think, because (and I am sick of reading and listening this overly-repeated ^dead os^ line) Nokia’s words on going all WP so Nokia trimmed down the design factor of 808 so when they get WP (or Maeo-next?) ready for this technology they will push it once again with a big bang.

We all know how good N8′s design and then N9′s design did. N9′s design throw almost everything Nokia has to offer in term of material, making process, size, look, strength and whatnot.

When it was N8′s time, there was no other thing on top of Symbian other than MeeGo, but even that was not ready so N8 and E7 were treated the same way as N9 and Lumias.

I am still not very familiar with all the Nokia’s special dates, but I think there is one more event left for Nokia, Nokia World or something! Maybe (if I am right about it) they will bring it up there.

Same goes with the Carla’s story. If it is Carla running on 808 and they are not calling it so, it might be for the same reason. Another thing for Carla could be that if Nokia tells us today it is Carla, we will be banging their and our and each others head with the Carla-cycle and that aint good for company as it will bring negative pressure through media, through online user-base and forums and not to mention the anti-Nokia/anti-Symbian pact + bloggers will find a weak spot to bash it more successfully.

Nokia also reducing the use of word ^Symbian^ because of this senseless anti-Symbian stories. Consumers don’t care much about the names however on other hand they also follow what they heard here and there, and they don’t investigate much. So the world Symbian has collected too much of negative fame as well as Windows on Mobile (WindowsMobile) so for consumers (and even the so-called seasoned bloggers and tech-experts) a Windows on Mobile is still a Bad thing.

Using the word Belle for now will give an impression to consumer market that it is not Symbian, and it is totally fine if they find out later but by that time they will experience it and they might stuck with it like we have seen in many cases. The same thing is happening on WindowsPhone ground too minus the changing name too much.

My wishful thinking is that Nokia will change the design of 808 before the final launch, however it seems not much possible since so much put into it, but still.

    • Black N9(wish it was 950) 16GB - waiting for the white one says:

Maybe.. Nokia may have reused older design for the 808 instead of having an all new design..

But I feel that since the PureView tech has been in development for about 5 years, the phone design may have been done 2-3years back. That is why people are finding resemblances to 5800 and N97.

      • FireDragon says:

I did think on these too. That is why I am hoping that maybe final design is something else.

        • s3m44 says:

there is no wow (N9 :P ) for the design of 808, but it is a good design when we consider the constraints of this model (housing the large camera module)

I am pretty impressed on the curved screen and the color scheme they adopted. The only thing I wish to change is the LED backlight color for the front buttons, no more red and green please.

    • RVM says:

Well, at first i didn’t like 808 design much, but now, after i saw Ali’s hands-on i like it. This curved glass design with perfect blacks on ClearBlack display… can’t wait to have it in my hands.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

Re;;”My wishful thinking is that Nokia will change the design of 808 before the final launch, however it seems not much possible since so much put into it, but still.”

      Dont think so..

      http://www.nokia.com/global/about-nokia/company/design-and-innovation/design-and-innovation/

“We rounded off the edges of the Nokia 808 PureView so it wouldn’t snag on your jeans pocket,” says Jamie Langford, Head of Industrial Design, Smart Devices. “We considered details such as a ceramic coating which has a beautiful finish and is easy to grip.”

I love the Curved Glass screen, like the N9..

    • stylinred says:

the 808s design is really growing on me at first i thought like you but the more i looked at it the more i felt differently

i think nokia gave it a lot of curves to make that hump for the sensor not so prominent

if they had given it a more straight edged look like the N8/N9/Lumias that hump for the sensor wouldnt only look enormous but it would also look very out of place and ultimately to the detriment of the device

i think the design of the 808 is very purposeful and to the aid of the hardware

      • FireDragon says:

What I am saying is that design is missing element of instant winner. Personally I am ok with the hump and thickness and I also understand that design is something personal. And also that mind begin to accept some designs after a while. Yes design is practical to hide the huge dimensions but still I am with “Black N960gb” for 5 years-in-making part.

However, they really need to get rid of that button setup for their own sake. It will improve the look a lot.

  13. lordstar says:

The design is actually good looking, it’s just the hump that really bothers me. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up, fp1 is Carla.. I really wonder why they changed the naming scheme though?

    • delanz says:

Nokia is building on the Belle branding I think, hiding the OS behind it. The switch to Carla’s name will not make Belle name remembered (the time period is too short). Just like the Lumia branding.

      • lordstar says:

Seems reasonable. Just as long as it’s supported until 2016 and maybe beyond that then I’m happy. Haha let’s see.

  14. kadearlak says:

If Belle FP1 is Carla then the 808 will get no major software update considering that Donna (as far as people could make out) was for Dual Core only.

  15. Yemi says:

Nokia’s CBD is ridiculous. See how crisp and clear the screen is see and easy to read outside.
To other manufacturers — TAKE THAT TAKE THAT!!!

  16. lordstar says:

Patiently waiting for new Nokia devices with belle feature pack 1. Is it gonna happen? Haha dsmobile don’t let me down. Hahahaha

  17. michele says:

imho it is. Belle was a codename at first, but at launch it became the official name of the OS. they even dropped the word Symbian, now they call it simply Nokia Belle and they want to keep this name. So Carla is just the codename (and will remain a codename) for Nokia Belle FP1.

  18. Richard says:

so another Nokia symbian phone with Donna i.e belle fp 2. Is gonna be released. And what would be it called Nokia 909. Dual core, but no pureview.

    • Shamus says:

“so another Nokia symbian phone with Donna i.e belle fp 2. Is gonna be released. And what would be it called Nokia 909. Dual core, but no pureview.”

And how do you know this?

  19. Paul says:

Nokia Carla is the top1 OS in the world. Much better than iphone, android or windowsphone.
Hope Nokia launched 801 (lumia design) but with CARLA!!!

    I will buy many!!

  20. rayyan ali khan says:
