Video: Nokia Lumia 900 First look and Unboxing (screen rotation demo)

| March 31, 2012 | 47 Replies

It appears that the Nokia Lumia 900 is beginning to appear to bloggers (the first unboxing we saw I think was AT&T staff, no? He said he got it from ‘work’)

Apparently, ‘it feels pretty awesome right now’. He mentions a ‘sim tray remover’. I’ve not actually seen this in action (and we won’t). The AT&T sim is already in the phone.

Rotation he says is very smooth. It does look to be faster than the 800, like the 710 (I find it makes a difference. It feels more fluid. I’ll mention this tomorrow in my 710 unboxing – I haven’t tested the 900 yet but I’m thinking the 710 is still somewhat slightly faster).

  1. Unboxing del Lumia 900 | April 1, 2012
  1. phph says:

damn that’s some really ugly packaging. Goodbye scandinavian minimalism…

    • Jay Montano says:

It’s network retail package. I bought a 710 the other day and it came in a hideous red box. :S

      • Janne says:

I have both the 710 and 800 with normal Nokia boxing (blue minimalist, although 710 box slightly longer due to oldschool charger being bigger). Same style as N9 box.

I am sure 900 internationally will retain the minimalist box style which is very nice. Quite apple-esque in a good Nokia kind of way.

I agree the AT&T box is ugly but that is AT&T, not Nokia.

Nokia has actually increased Scandinavian minimalism in boxes and ads since Elop came onboard. Ahtisaari may have something to do with it.

        • stylinred says:

and thats the box that Nokia should have insisted on AT&T to use; if ATT wanted their own branding/etc on it they should have simply given it a slip-cover

          • Janne says:

You think Nokia in U.S. is in a position to insist much?

          • Andre says:

I’ll let you guys in on a not so well kept secret, Nokia apps like drive et al are NOT pre-installed on devices. They’re well available on the marketplace of course but the utterly crap carrier bloatware applications like AT&T navigator (can be uninstalled of course) but the average user would be inclined to believe that the Nokia apps don’t exist.

Guess it’s the price you pay for getting in bed with carriers

        • Silthice says:

Is it true a lot people that bought 710 and 800 said that 710 performs much better compare to 800?
          Is it true?

          • Janne says:

Quick comment from me: I’ve yet to use my 710 much, but from my tests I haven’t noticed a performance difference. But truth be told both are so slick I’d be hard-pressed to notice with such limited 710 testing. Maybe I will see in the future… Looking forward to Jay’s input on this one so I can test particulars.

Of course the 710 has the RGB screen, a bit duller colors but better perceived resolution than the PenTile AMOLED in 800.

Biggest difference for me (aside the looks) is that 710 has physical buttons and 800 capacitive. The 800′s feel more like the screen and thus better, on 710 pressing the buttons – while fine as far as buttons go – detracts from the touch experience a bit more because you need to raise your finger a bit and then physically press instead of touching.

          • Pdexter says:

My friend have 710 and i have 800.

They perform the same, meaning super smooth. Tough there’s one difference and that’s screen rotation being slightly faster on 710.

            • Silthice says:

I heard 710 takes better video compare to 800 but 710 have bad battery life compare to 800. Is it true?

              • Janne says:

710 has a smaller standard battery, so I assume that to be true.

But having a user-changeable battery, the 710 does fit a larger capacity Nokia battery – some say it is a tight fit, but OK, others have modded the back cover by removing the inside paddings to make a physically larger battery fit better.

                • Silthice says:

I’m thinking if both have almost similar performance cause both have the same CPU and GPU. Lumia 800 is more on physical cosmetics only. Then better go for Lumia 710 for those who are not fancy about the looks.

                  • Janne says:

                    Yes, perhaps so.

I have both 710 and 800, and I actually prefer the 710 a bit more in my early testing… The specs are same, but 710 RGB screen as opposed to 800 PenTile and the 710 two-colored design is winning me over. Screen rotates faster in 710, but I’d expect 800 getting that in a software update – unless it has something to do with the screen technology.

But 710 of course has a worse 5 MP camera and only 8 GB of storage for those whom that matters. The memory is not an issue to me, we shall see about the camera.

    best of luck nokia

  3. stylinred says:

Amazon is selling the 900 for $0.01

  4. Chen Zhe says:

Good luck Nokia. As an old consumer of AT&T and their E71x.

  5. Dan says:

I think the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy will be too much for Windows Phone

  6. Rebbe says:

Do you think the bezel around the screen will be a dealbreaker for many? I have read various phone blogs and in the comments they are worried about the bezel around the screen… Personally I don’t think it is.

Alot of value for that price!

    • Just Visiting says:

I don’t think so; although I agree, there is a lot of bezel! I think the overall size would be a barrier for those with smaller hands or those who simply want a smaller device.

For the price, not to mention the overall style of the device – it really is unique and unlike anything HTC, Samsung, or LG has ever produced – I think a lot of people will purchase this lovely :)

Nokia TV app in the works? http://wapo.st/GYppzj

    • Rebbe says:

NICE! It seems that Nokia Tv app provides the WebTV content from Yle 1(areena) mtv3 (katsomo) and Nelonen (Ruutu) three big channels in Finland… The WebTV uses flash so it doesn’t work on the lumia without some kind of app like this one.

  8. davela72 says:

This does use a micro sim, correct? I have the N9 as well and would like to be able to switch back and forth.

As far as the size, I need to go back to the AT&T store and check it again. The first time I checked it out it felt way different than the N9 in the hand, still up in the air. I would say I would like the size of the 800 better but I’m not sure how much better this 900 is, usage wise. I could care less about the front camera but I’m sure I’m in the minority on that one. Am I crazy to be leaning toward the 800 than the 9?

  9. Doug says:

Phone doesn’t come with Nokia Drive or Nokia Maps on it. You have to take it upon yourself to find them in the marketplace, which is something that unless you’re told about it, 90% of the people who buy this, won’t know about it. What a shame because AT&T does this all the time with Nokia.

    • davela72 says:

And who wants AT&T Navigator when you have Maps and Drive, for free!

    • Andre says:

AT&T can suck on my testes. Seriously speaking, why uninstall the Nokia apps, the apps that make the device much more worthwhile than other Windows Phone. Idiots trying to force people to use their shite apps?

      • AlsoCan says:

Glad to read you again! you were most supportive of the new nokia strategy after it was announced one year back. Would be curious to know your opinion now.

      • Doug says:

It’s part of the deal when making an agreement with the carrier to have them carry your phone. It’s give and take and they want their navigation software front and center for obvious reasons. Android phones have more say though and get to keep navigation because they have more power than Nokia does. I know I will tell people about it when I sell the phone, but let’s hope others do as well.

    • Pdexter says:

Good thing with 900 and WP is that you can simply uninstall AT&T apps.
But yeah, it’s a shame. That said 900 hasbeen featured on a front page on the main spot.

That probably hasn’t ever happened for Nokia phone.

  10. manu says:

what is general mood in u.s about rentry of nokia and lumia 900.

  11. NokiaFan says:

Here we go, they are doing same mistake again. Its full of ATT blood-ware ATT navigation and so on. Where is Nokia drive ??? This is exactly what they did to nokia e71x. Regular e71 was fantastic but one from att was horrible. 95% of poeple dont know anything about flashing phones or installing nokia drive. What ever is in there is in there and thats what they will use. Att will charge them $5 for shitty navigation, people will get fed up because they think its nokia and there you go customer lost, nokia reputation lost. I dont like apple but i definitively like what they did with iphone… they dont allow carrier to put their logo on it or install any bloodware in it.
Every nokia that i ever came across from carrier was bad compare to one straight from manufacture. For example: e71x bad, e73 bad, Nokia x7 rogers, nokia astound(c7) and so on.
I love nokia but i hate how they always shoot them self in foot

    • Andre C says:

      Just two words: Carrier phone.

There are conditions for a carrier to accept a phone to be branded by their logo, one is certainly the liberty to install their own crappy apps. Maybe they even asked for nokia maps not to be installed by default.

      • NokiaFan says:

I understand that. That is why this phone is “free” . But their are definitely hurting them self with this

        • Andre C says:

I suppose there are two solutions for this that nokia can try:

          1. Short term; advertise nokia maps and drive as much and as big as they can to get the word to their lumia buyers and WP in general.

          2. Long term; survive and become a very major player in smartphone market again, especially in US, like apple, so that they can force carriers not to mess up with the phones.

    • Pdexter says:

What they can do? That’s what the North American carriers do and Nokia is in no position to make demands.

This is BY FAR the most visibility Nokia has got in USA market in years.

AT&T version just has the logo and couple of pre installed apps that you can take off the phone by just long pressing the app.

It’s very little to pay for the visibility.

      • NokiaFan says:

Yes thats what you and me would do, but 95% of people dont know that. They dont know what nokia drive is and so on

        • Pdexter says:

          I’m not disputing that.

Me and others are just saying what the situation is.

Thankfully Nokia Collection is very visible when you enter marketplace so those apps are not somewhere hidden and you needing to search for them.

  12. dansus says:

Picked up a 800 as a tester for the 900, im going back to the N9.

    • Simo says:

I did the same thing, but ended up keeping the Lumia 800 and selling my N9 :D . Can’t wait to grab the 900.

      • Janne says:

N9 does seem a tad slow compared to Lumias. I noticed this when last week I used my N9 for a few days after a long Lumia 800 stretch. N9 not so smooth. But then nothing is as smooth as WP, iOS comes close but is not as moving somehow.

        • Shilow says:

Why is that even touted as such a major thing?
I haven’t noticed a big difference in RWT.
Not enough for it to really matter at all.
It’s like it’s the only major thing users can cite.

  13. Newtype says:

I simply can’t believe this phone doesn’t include headphones.

  14. DesR85 says:

Rotation is faster on the Lumia 900 than the 800. I own the latter and the rotation is slightly slower. Don’t find that a big deal.

  15. Shilow says:

    SPAM.
