Weekend Read: Nokia Concept UIs Revisited (from 2006)
I remember writing about this video, already reminiscing the fact that in 2006 (and possibly even before that) Nokia knew precisely what touch interfaces should look like. Yet for some reason, we got lumbered with S60 which doomed us all (Note, not Symbian, but S60).
Look at the little gallery view think. That’s a little like the widget on Belle FP1 right? This one actually looks more dynamic.
The phone uses the camera, GPS, and accelerometer (possibly even gyro) to have augmented reality star viewing. We take this kind of thing for granted now but back in 2006 that would be witchcraft.
Look at this lock screen interface. Before swipe to unlock. Before iPhone existed. Before Android existed.
It was also interesting how they brought this interaction up.
How is it that Nokia can come up with such amazing ideas but we never see Nokia implement them? Or at least someone else becomes famous for it?
Remember the lock screen – the active lock screen where you can interact with things within the lock screen?
Already filed in 2007.
Lastly, the most obvious thing but overlooked.
This touch interface is very thumb friendly. There’s no keyboard. There’s no buttons. Such a thing was laughable when the iPhone was going to try this. No stylus too. But Nokia’s already there.
Imagine what could have been if Nokia would have let the world’s most creative and talented minds turn these concepts into reality.

sad for them that they didn’t implemented that and iphone stolen their crown.
things like this get me mad
that they didnt implement/patent those ideas
That’s ridiculousness! Infighting within Nokia has always held up innovations from ever seeing the light of day.
What else is held up in Nokia’s secret labs?!?!?!
Oh man…
Where is that bad-ass Nokia style gone?
Sad…and mad! =/
This is what i hate about Nokia… I have feeling Nokia n9/meego was their another mistake. Just watch, next iphone will be swype and apple will claim its revolutionary and they did it first!!!!! And everybody will eat their bull crap …. arrrrrrrrrr
How come you see invention but not implementation you ask? Well, there are two magic words to answer that question: “middle” and “management”.
With how the things have been going on lately, you can scratch the word ‘middle’ – the senior management is as much of a problem, if not even greater atm., than the middle is.
This lack of pushing forward with brilliant inventions or commericalising them goes all the way back to Hildon and the early part of the last decade. Nokia became a series of fiefdoms for senior managers to fight amongst each other. OPK entrenched this with idiotic policies where departments would fight against each other for resources to develop their idea or strategies. Seemed like a good idea on paper but all it did is strengthen the entrenched managers who had become out of touch with the market.
MS has put all its eggs into the Metro interface and thats what will remain on windows devices for the forseable future. Any new revolutionary UI metaphor will only be impplemented on low end phones as all Nokia high end phones going forward will be windows based.
Hey guys, this is off topic, but recently found someone posting a screenshot of nokia n8 running meego! Not sure if it’s a fake or not, but beware since todaynis April fool, it could be a prank. Here’s the link http://twitpic.com/93k8vb
Three things:
Firstly, that unlock screen looks like Mazeunlock for Android!! So this video was available for all to see and someone just copied the idea!!?
Second, the widget that Jay talks about looks like the one from Belle FP1 and I agree!! So we getting things from 2006 implemented now!! Where’s the stuff from 2010/2011? Besides swipe I’m sure they have more stuff in their labs??
Third, I guess Nokia didn’t patent any of these concepts and that’s why others just conveniently implemented the ideas before Nokia which is just sad.
This is what pisses me off with the heads at Nokia! If this stuff was releases instead of that crap N97, Nokia would still be at the top!
Wtf goes on at Nokia Headquarters?
I miss the N95 days!
5mp camera, 30 fps Video recording, best phone speakers, beautiful design, and I keep on going! Heck, I was even playing street fighter on the N95.
Damn iPhone took Nokias crown! But, now with the Lumia 900 arriving… Nokia is going to turn a lot of heads again! Welcome back, Nokia! Welcome back! Stick to WP cos Symbian is dead… Just like Meego!
and maemo :’( a very long time ago….
its always a surprise for me to see these videos,
i can’t believe nokia was at the forefront of technology so early but lost it all to others,
