Wazapp on N9/N950 has been delayed

Huge uproar has been flooding TMO as N9 owners have been waiting for the release of the community port of WhatsApp, Wazapp, said to be released May 1. There was speculation it was all done just to get donations and scam people.

The developer has recently posted this on the thread at TMO

Hi, I just want to clarify something. Basically the only reason I set May 1 as a release date, wasn’t because the app was ready to be released, actually I had tons of bugs and work to do to make it actually usable by public without sucking. The only reason I set that date as a target was to force myself to fix all those issues before May 1, because otherwise it would have taken me like another month to do so. And I did fix all the issues I intended to fix on time, and was fully aiming to release a beta at that date. However when it came to testing a real scenario that included registration (which I rarely test) more things came up causing the delay. One of the things for example is that whatsapp registration code via SMS for some reason takes A LOT of time to arrive (I requested one yesterday which hasn’t arrived yet), which makes me think of adding voice request as a fallback registration method.

So yes maybe I shouldn’t have announced May 1 as a release date unless I was sure about it, but if I haven’t done so, it most probably would have been next month or something, while right now it should take only some hours of work to get it ready. But anyway I owe you an apology for not releasing it at that date and I hope no one is still mad at me

I certainly don’t mine waiting longer, if it means the app is less buggy/more feature packed. Some people were forgetting that this dev has done all the work himself and without him, there wouldn’t be WhatsApp on Harmattan. More people need to grateful.

Just thought I’d give you guys a heads up. Will post as soon as it is released.

So many have been acting like tools in that thread.
I mean, how can so many people be so dumb?
On second thought, forget I asked that…

    • Wantuatu says:

Most important question of all this is that question: WHY NOKIA HAS NOT SUPPORTED DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH A SOFTWARE? At last why has not insisted on official developer to publish Nokia version? And when sole community contributor has taken a challenge to develop it on his own, then all here are suspecting he is scummer? This is not quite fair. This is job made by several persons in regular stuff and here there is one man only! He is asking for donations? Perhaps he must eat, drink, live, pay bills etc..? There is possibility of both: it will work and it will fail – but both of them are upone this one single community contributor.
      How about to help him?
For me it can be delayed even a few months if only it will work!…
He don’t have team, don’t have marketing support, don’t have press team, and there are many many “don’t have” not even mentioned. Consider this, please, before you start criticize him. He is doing Nokia job I think, should be thanked, at last.
I hope this is not a scam.

That’s ok.. Although there is a little bit of disappointment, but to the benefit of ALL N9 users, we hope that the app is perfect and fit to use.

    KEEP IT UP DUDE!!!

  3. Luis Quezada says:

people expected the launch that day, but if you have problems at least for me not worry and launch the tool with fewer problems
I appreciate the time you’ve taken to develop and invite people to support your time donating to the cause

  4. ibet says:

it will never be released to you all guys. scam!!!

I liked my N9 but I’m so glad I switched it out for a Lumia back in November. This is just another thing I would have missed out on (although granted, the N9 also offers a few things the Lumia line doesn’t, though nothing major).

He’s right though, it takes forever to get a confirmation text, at least lately. When I switched out from my Lumia 800 to my Lumia 900, I had to use the call-back method to get my confirmation code.

  6. Aliqudsi says:

Personally I get the feeling it’s a scam; every post he put was asking for donations- as well as the fact that for some reason or the other “this” is in the source code of the page:

    • Harangue says:

Good point. I’m also wondering how he is able to make an app that uses all the things the official WhatsApp uses.

I mean, server access and such. Would WhatsApp really allow that? Even Spotify (or some other app, can’t recall) is constantly changing little things to break 3rd party compatibility. (for WP they are at least)

So, I’m really doubtfull whether it is 1) Not a scam, 2) Keeps working after a while 3) If WhatsApp actually gave the dev acces.

I know WhatsApp weren’t too keen on 3rd party developers for WP when their app wasn’t on that platform yet.

It’s not that hard, it’s like making yahoo messenger client. but this one is a bit more difficult because of the phone number stuff

      • James says:

If you’d both been following the thread, you’d realize it’s not dodgy.
It’s discussed in great detail as-to-how it could possibly work.
Not just by the main dev…..
Whatsapp is essentially a mutant derivative of XMPP clients.
It is however a real possibility, that he’s constantly playing “cat & mouse” w/whatsapp.

    • james says:

That png is for before, if you have visited the website before, you could see there was a question that asked isn’t N9 dead already? and when you click on that question this NO would appear.

BTW, it is NOT scam, and if you saw that video, it’s working but it needs a little bit more coding. don’t be negative and do not donate if you feel uncomfortable like me, I left the donate to give him after the release

  7. akse says:

Maybe use some other IM that works on all platforms including PC? Skype.. yeah you can also call with it.

    • james says:

I don’t know why people just avoid using Skype!!!

    • James says:

To appreciate why people prefer clients like whatsapp/ebuddy, try using them.
They have qualities that make them quite different to traditional IM’s like Skype.

  8. Paid poster says:

    Elop has threatened those guys!

  9. Greg says:

Hi There, i have a question.
when the soft is ready will i be able to use on n900? r they the same apps? or i should sell my phone and get a new one?

    • James says:

      @Greg

Read the thread linked to in the article…
It been confirmed multiple times that there’s plans to support N900 too.

  10. nokia tried with whatsapp(the company) , but wahtsapp refused they believe Meego is nothing to deserve attention

    • James says:

“nokia tried with whatsapp(the company) , but wahtsapp refused”

And you have proof for this claim right, where is it?

  11. Christopher says:

Thanks for the research being done an will continue to wait for this service. No else seems to take the time to get this done for us Nokia fans.
Hope this gets done soon so I can continue to enjoy an convince myself what a great phone the N900 is to date.
Thank you for your work Michael Faro-Tusino an keep it up.
