Ollila: Changes had to be made in Nokia software over 10 years ago, but could not deliver

Another interview with Ex Nokia Chariman, Jorma Ollila. He states that Nokia knew changes had to be made in software over 10 years ago but they could no deliver. Note, this is translated from German.

It was mainly started with the weak software platform and the fact that this was not a European level. We were recognized for 10 years, the late 90’s and early 2000 that the Nokia’s strength should be, but we were not able to implement it

Nokia created the smartphone. They knew this is where the future was headed. They also knew however that their current offerings had to significantly improve for long term sustainability. We’ve seen plenty of side projects at Nokia to know they understood UI. We’ve seen various examples of Symbian (UIQ, S90, S80 – hildon UI) that truly showed off what it could do. Unfortunately, Nokia’s own take with S60 was not the right long term option.

It was easier to play safe, especially when you’re dominant. But Nokia could break free quick enough from what delivered them early success. This breaking free was necessary in order to evolve at the pace necessary to respond and direct changes in the market.

Credit to Nokia though, they did stay on top for a record amount of time. Ollila apparently still believes Nokia can triumph. The board believes that Nokia’s upcoming products will deliver. As Ollila said, it is quite rightly a marathon, and Nokia is in this game for the long run.

Cheers Everyone for the tip
