Video: PhotoSynth Panorama app for WP (Seriously Awesome App)

| May 30, 2012 | 53 Replies

As we just posted Phot0Synth was just released for WP bringing awesome 360 panorama capture to all WPs; here’s a quick Hands-On preview of the app I filmed a few minutes ago:

And here’s the panorama I captured in the Video: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=2d6ce554-5609-4584-a8ed-dad490ad147a (phone was shaking while capturing so it’s a bit messy)

Anyone else try it out yet?

*this is the first app video to be recorded with the iPad, what do you guys think of the quality? Stick with it or back to the N8? (It was hell trying to pan/focus the phone while mimicking the same movements on the iPad with only one hand- had to refilm about 5 times.)

    Ain’t that a pretty sight.

  2. Muerte says:

Seriously, stick to the N8 :D Filming / photographing with an iPad looks so stupid that it’s hilarious, but even then, stick to the N8 because of the quality.

  3. gabriel9 says:

Why double post? I’t the same subject. :/

And you think this is “Seriously Awesome App”? Just try 808.

I have a idea, why don’t you create post for every photo taken with your Lumia? So i can lose more of my time.

    • Aliqudsi says:

Lay off dude, one is a video preview with sample the other was announcement plus a minor rant about the 610. And I filmed this ten minutes ago after a lot of people had already seen the previous post. Give me your email I’ll be sure to send you a picture roundup daily.

      • gabriel9 says:

Here is the mail, i expect to get one picture every day.
Second, you could add video in one of the comments.
And not spamming posts about WP.
Tell me one new stuff which you added in this post?

I come to this blog because i can still read some good comments, and some of the posters are really good(not you).
I hope this will not change, and more good stuff will come from this blog.

        • Aliqudsi says:

Well I’m sorry you don’t like my posts; since your a developer of sorts, I’m sure you could code up a quick “Aliqudsi block” so that my posts are filtered out; if not tough luck.

Also from the homepage of MNB you could read the short preview of the post where I said it’s jut an addition to the previous post; if you saw that why bother clicking “read More”?

          • gabriel9 says:

I already work on something like that. :D I hope i will get some free time to finish it. But you can help, just don’t double post, or no post at all. :)

            • arts says:

Also from the homepage of MNB you could read the short preview of the post where I said it’s jut an addition to the previous post; if you saw that why bother clicking “read More”?

notice how you completely fail to answer this part.

Secondly, to answer the question, what does this post add in addition to the previous one? You might want to check out the video shown here. The last time I checked there was no video for the other one.

              • gabriel9 says:

:D I am sorry, now i will answer on that, and your life will be compleate. :)
I use feed reader, and when i get new post i just click on it. To tell you the truth i did not read article title.

The video is new? Do you think they should add new post for every video they make? Did he put any new info on it? Ah yes, we now know that he has a iPad. :D

Now when i ansvered, you can live in harmony. -_-

                • Aliqudsi says:

Difference between me and you is that I spend time trying to write articles to keep people in the know if you don’t care move on, you’ve waste enough time complaining then if you had closed the tab and done something important. I occasionally film. Videos when I feel like it – I think I get to decide what’s worth posting and what’s not.

Funny I don’t see you complaining when we make a new post every time we find an 808 sample or video.

                  • layoffthepopangelgabriel says:

Dont let the people who wouldn’t speak like that to you if you were with them (or if they did you could stick the nut on them) get you down – thanks for the post.

Yes quality control on stories is important (that ‘verdict’ one a week or two ago dipped below) but in my view this one is useful and helpful. Based on it I am loading the app onto my Lumia 800.

                  • gabriel9 says:

I teach other people. I promote good technology.
I had some invites to write(for couple of blogs), but i don’t have time, i already have problems with lack of sleap, and this post is not writing it’s just a video.

808 is really something special, it deserves all praise. All the help it can get. WP is not new, this app is not new. It does not deserve double post.
But again i must add i don’t hate WP i just don’t like it. I hate the way they push it. There is so many better solutions.

                    • Aliqudsi says:

Well if you really did know anything about blogging you’d know it’s a million times easier to type something up then it is to post a video- videos include actually filming it, then processing it, Uploading it, actually waiting for it to upload (sometimes it takes over 2 hours) then posting it.

And even though it’s none of your business but none of the bloggers here make any money; most of the revenue goes towards hosting the site and the apps we review. And most of the phones we get are either purchased with our own money or trials that get sent back. with some minor exceptions in rare cases.

                    • Jay Montano says:

” It does not deserve double post.”

No. Ho about three. One more time: Lumiappaday #197: Photosynth demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

There’s something we have called titles. They often work by suggesting what might be the content of the post.

“808 is really something special, it deserves all praise.”

I’m glad you think so because we think that too. We post every 808 PureView related story that we hear about? We are ALL very excited about it’

We talk about its features, we share videos, we share photos, we share updates, we share accomplishments, we share behind the scenes stuff. P

I’m sure I’ve had this same conversation with you before about the type of content that appears here, yet you are wanting to rehash it all over again.

Please, just avoid the posts you don’t like. We blog about Nokia because we like to. If I want to talk about 808 over and over I will. If I want to join multiple stories into one, I will. If we want to shoot a video and create a new post about that, we will. This is an INFORMAL fan blog. We have titles where you can clearly avoid if something looks familiar to you.

There are some days when we might post about the same story at the same time – there are other days when we’d be following up a story. e.g. New app available, demo of that new app on video and the sequence of the app ‘review’. I’m sure we’ve posted similar things, say about fMobi – the new fMobi – fMobi on video etc etc etc.

Of all the posts – I think it’s actually the WP stuff that we screen and reduce because there’s so much news coming in this way or that (new apps here, new updates there, rumoured something here, etc etc).

                    • Mark says:

                      “I teach other people”

No, apparently you just lecture them.

Pro tip: Don’t like a topic? Don’t read it. The fact is that WP is currently Nokia’s flagship OS. It would be a bit weird if a substantial numbers of articles weren’t about it.

I never understand people who whine about things they’re under no obligation to do.

    • Hypnopottamus says:

Loose more of your time? Please. You didn’t even watch the entire video did you? I also doubt that you read anything involving WP in its entirety. You just like to comment with an anti-WP/pro Symbian tirade.

And yes, this is an awesome app. Why is it so hard to fathom that having an app that can stitch together photos to make a panorama photo is awesome? Or do you think having a panorama app is a waste of time?

      • gabriel9 says:

One post is enough, there is more important things to watch. Or you know how to extend human lifespan?

I work with MS(Windows technologies) every single day as a developer and as a user. So don’t go on that card. Also i have done some lectures about future of mobile industry. NOKIA is prime example how to destroy your own product line.
And for the most part i defending it, and promote it…

Why would i watch the entire video? Will it make me smarter? Will it help me to do some more important task? One word NO. It’s the same post.

I saw new post and opened it, it is the same as before. :/
I could write some comment on first post, but i did not. I respect authors and they right to write(new good stuff).

It’s just a app, it will not feed you.

        • JamesSB says:

“It’s just a app, it will not feed you.” So we should just skip writing about technologies….

          • gabriel9 says:

You miss my point, there is far more usefull aps out there. I checked this app and it is not special. Tell me how many picture did you take with it? Only use for it i see when i mountclimb, there is nice views, but still i will not mountclimb every day. :)

We should write about technologies, but new and inovative. The web is full of creap, and one more double post surely does not help. :/

            • JamesSB says:

To many, this is all they need in apps (photo manipulation software).
Honestly, you are correct in saying, “We should write about technologies, but new and inovative” since this is an old technology. Obviously by judging the comments, most people don’t realize that Microsoft first released Photosynth as a tech preview in 2006 and then made it public in 2008.
Your argument would have been better approaching it from that angle. Of course, you should know this since you, “work with MS(Windows technologies) every single day as a developer and as a user.”

            • Jay Montano says:

OK. What’s going on in the world of Symbian/MeeGo yesterday that you wanted us to talk about.
You might seem against the talk of apps, but the majority of stories at AAS are apps or looking back to create a list from nokia’s Symbian history.

As for who uses this – i don’t know the global numbers but I’ve been seeing it quite frequently on my facebook feed (this was available on iPhone before WP)

        • arts says:

For a person who come in here just to bitch and complain and whine, i cannot fathom how this video might benefit said person, but i assume the opportunity to whine without comprehending the contents of this post is benefit enough.
for the rest of the world thou, this video might serve as a brief hands on to the said app. Which, is not provided in the previous post.

        • Janne says:

These guys run a hobby blog and took the time to record a video for our benefit… And you complain? How about a thank you.

          Thank you, guys.

          • gabriel9 says:

They have enogh money from advertizing, and free devices. No one is doing anything for free thease days…

I really like some post on this blog, and comments. I respect that. But as i said double post is just wrong. It did not add anything new.

Also i don’t have anything against you guys. Pece and love to all readers.

            • Jay Montano says:

Actually, no – this blog runs on ads but they don’t generate anywhere near as much revenue as you think they would. e.g. One set of ads took 4 months to reach $30. It all goes towards hosting and running costs. Otherwise this is done just out of our own free time because we enjoy writing so.

You may like to make your claim and insinuations and believe what you want to believe. I set this blog up in 2007. Up until 2011 we weren’t serving these ads. The only purpose of the ads was to fund the site’s running cost once I moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org to allow more freedom in terms of the layout/themes/widgets etc. Prior to that actually, I was making losses for wordpress running costs – but I did so because I just enjoyed blogging. It was a hobby – and for some, people will pay to do that.

Running costs are expensive. I am a student – I can’t afford to take time out of my studies to have a part time job (especially not on a medical course) in order to pay the hosting and other running costs. Time is already taken up by blogging already so why not use it to self sustain? I don’t want them to be too intrusive and that’s why over time I have been continually cutting down on the ads served. I have even recommended readers who find them intrusive to use adblock/flashblock. Free devices are cool but the majority of stuff is returned and just trialled. if we get to keep one every now and again, that’s cool and we’ll use it wisely to create more material out of it when we can.The videos that we produce don’t carry adverts and revenue is not generated from them. If they ever carry an advert that’s youtube’s own self imposed ads when we might use their audioswap thing or along that line.

i’m really thankful for Ali and Michael’s (as well as other writers in the past) time and support here as well as the readers who contribute to making the site grow and fun to write for. In the end, this is just something we do for FUN in our spare time for no other reason that we just like talking about Nokia. It’s a strange obsession but then aren’t most obsessions strange. I have no Nokia Stock. Just fanlove. Many people can still do things purely out of enjoyment – at least speaking for myself, i will continue doing this for as long as I am able and for as long as i am still a Nokia fanboy. Thanks to everyone who has been supporting us.

        • Mark says:

          “One post is enough”

So just read one of them.

    • Makiko says:

Yes I agree. Creators of Mynokiablog has decided they have right to waste our time on every shitplum around Windows Lumia. This is BORRING and this just WASTE of my time. This panorama is well known from N8 Symbian, N9 MeeGo from a long time. There is nothing interesting, this is just a commercial not a blog post. . Simply dumb phones with windows just have it, a few years after rest of the mobile world. Am I to laugh or to cry?

      • Jay Montano says:

Thank you Annethe for your consistent negativity and deceitful approach with your username.

I would suggest, personally to you, to stop browsing MyNokiaBlog. You can then both laugh and cry and enjoy moaning about what we do here elsewhere.

Please let me know about the interactive panorama app that is just like this on N8 and N9. One where not only can you stich photos sweeping left to right but moving up, down, diagnonally and in multiple axis. Please – i really like panoramas. Loved it a ton on the N8 and posted a huge gallery about it here:

        http://mynokiablog.com/2010/12/23/freakishly-awesome-gallery-human-cloning-with-the-nokia-n8-now-this-is-magical-p/

Advance thanks for the name of the app for n8/N9.

    Amazing app!!!

  5. afv says:

photosynth for nokia 808.. uffffff that would be perfect.. :D
or atleast nokia 808.. if it ever comes out..

  6. BENJIMOLA says:

I’d like to say I finally upgraded from my E71 to Lumia 900 2 hours ago… and its the best phone in the market. Photosynth is the first app I downloaded and I love it. I have beginning to see the white lumia in wales… especially in the hands of girls… I hope nokia open their eyes and send the phone to other stores other than phones4u…

    • Aliqudsi says:

COngrats! What color did you get?/ (White!)
That’s the thing about WP; on paper it doesn’t look to special but once you try it out paired with the awesome lumia design you get a killer combo (now go check out the rest of the Lumiappadays that Jay works so hard on)

      • BENJIMOLA says:

I got the white… but it cant see adhoc network from my laptop…. is there anything I can do to fix that?

        • Janne says:

Turn it on in the settings of the phone first.

Also, it is not ad hoc network. It is proper infrastructure network!

      • arts says:

White is indeeed beautiful. :) btw do you use a lumia to browser this site? The previous layout was more mobile friendly. Now the comments are hard to read :x

        • Aliqudsi says:

Hmmm not really, why are they harder to read? Might wanna take it up with Jay.

About adhoc do you mean the tethering off your lumia? Don’t have mine yet but when I tried it two months ago it was working fine.

          • BENJIMOLA says:

I want to use my pc connection to get mine lumia online… so far the only way was to plug the cable and open zune and it starts to browse… I don’t know why it cant see my laptop wifi but it can see other wifi…

  7. Gavin says:

I can’t find this wen I search ? Is it only available in some markets? I’m in Australia.

  8. JGrove303 says:

Well that’s cool. I can’t watch the video (since Belle is anti .flv). Does it work like Panorama on S^3 devices? That should still work on the 808 when it releases.

I mostly browse on my N8 (like i am atm) and the new layout loads faster and reads easier on Nokia Browser 8.3.

    • Aliqudsi says:

Its like most panorama apps except it covers the x and y axis meaning you can have a 3d panorama showing the sky and ground in the same image. (like the walk troughs of museums online).

      • JGrove303 says:

Oh, that is Bitchen!! Much better than Panorama. I’m getting itchy to try out a Lumia, but I don’t know if I’m ready to spend my upgrade on a L900 and bite the Bullet on paying for LTE. I’m in Los Angeles, California and we definitely have AT&T LTE coverage. Thought about getting a Lumia 710 off contract or finding a killer deal on a 800. Ugh..decisions…

  9. stylinred says:

that opening animation is great! good job to whoever made it

    • Aliqudsi says:

Thanks that was one of our reader ROCKS doing, wasn’t sure if I should add it at both ends of the video or just the start, what do you think?

      • stylinred says:

just the starts good think it would be a little much at the ending too

or maybe clip it and just show the mynokiablog logo @ the ending

        • Aliqudsi says:

Ahh not a bad idea, although we really haven’t settles on a logo yet… so I’ll hold out on that till we do.

  10. Jesse says:

It looks ok. I would highly recomend a device that shoots 60fps for recording screens, the canon 60D is a great device for such recordings!

    Photosynth is too awesome!!!
