Follow Euro 2012 on Nokia Maps

| June 7, 2012 | 13 Replies

Nokia has launched a guide to Euro 2012. Users can find the information and location of  the stadiums and the full list of matches that will be played on. When clicking on cities like Kiev and Warsaw,  the link takes you to the City Guides, where one can see the current time and weather information, city facts as well as things to do and visit.

I like the overall interface of this guide, and I’m sure I’ll be using it during the Euro to check scores and updates. I hope Nokia may do the same for the London Olympics and the future big sport events.

European football championships starts Friday! How do you like the Nokia’s guide? What team are you going to root for?

I hope it helps you guys, I’m from Poland but currently live in Chicago IL, I went there once with one stop in Warsaw than a short flight to
Krakow (not far from where I lived), I get out in Warsaw from the plain, everything’s great, I have time to spare, I know the language, AND I still could find the terminal I was looking for: real mess 😀

what’s your take on the reports of racism and hate crimes going on during games in poland?

I’m part polish but no one in the family has been to Poland for generations so it’d be interesting to get the view of someone actually from there 🙂

The BBC report I think is showing atmosphere among members of closed groups which are not majority of population. just like gangs in the Big Apple are not majority of NY population. They create a kind of sub-culture, do dark things, even deal drugs etc. etc. If you are not looking for such a companions I think you will not meet troubles. I personally avoid such things and still I am alive and I not a victim of crime.

As I have noticed recently most active leaders of “ultras” as they are sometimes called are either monitored and not allowed to come (stadion restriction, all tickets for euro are with first and second names and valid with IDcards only) or arrested for their others problems with law they have.

Also foreign smokers were stopped at borders and not allowed to come, as Shengen act has been hanged for time of euro, so there is full control on the boarder.

This is for marketing purposes only and is very far far from prepared support for football fans during euro 2012. Of course it will display scores and tiles but not to much more. If you need real help and support and real time info access you better use apps prepared and coordinated by government, police and others, hotels, train-air-bus companies, databases, volunteers etc. – which have been prepared last 4 years as integrated system with serious involvement of many serious people. And where you can find if not everything then the most of what was prepared for visitors, also speaking foreign languages so you will not have to fight with polish language. btw: Polish is second most difficult language on this planet, after Chinese which is the first one. 🙂 Everyone during euro speak English, or will try ;).

Yes it is a great shame. I am sorry to say that but Nokia is focused on W promotion only. Hence there are several (2 official by government + 4 private independent) apps guide euro2012 for Android, iOS, Blackaburry but Nokia users I’d rather would say “are left on ice”. Anyway you can count on help in zones called “euro fans embassy” where you will meet volunteers speaking languages who will help you. With smartphone application you would have free access to all the data bases and guides prepared in many languages, sms alerts for many things from events to ranks or warnings or accomodation&travelling tips, travelling plans, accommodation & transportation (plain, train, bus, drive), teams & players etc. – it has been prepared and given, but you know… all-we-know-what-is-primary-priority…

About racism: just like in every country all over the world. Against aggression and smokers there were prepared 26 Integrated Security Plans (in consultation with UEFA and police from many countries) with several scenarios, variants and only God knows what else. In the past during some concerts like Rolling Stones or Madonna there were from 500k or 900k and above participants. As in general it was secure, and during euro one event is about 100-200k participants in one place but in several cities I don’t think there will be any problems. For problem makers are prepared 24hour working courts and country-coordinated police forces with support by police from foreign countries for fans speaking non-polish language, so they can find a friendly calm & peace atmosphere faster then expected.

Anyway some idiots could appear. Also racists or worse ones. Just the same like in own country of all of you. No worse no better. This is just free Europe.
