Video: Nokia 808 PureView (Red) First Unboxing at Nokia House

| June 7, 2012 | 67 Replies

Yesterday I had a Nokia 808 PureView to play with at Helsinki. I got it mid morning at the Nokia Lounge in Nokia house and thought I’d do an unboxing.

I thought this was already unboxed but searching around on YouTube and Google, I can’t seem to find any other video that does show an unboxing of the Nokia 808 PureView.  (Some are titled as such but actually there isn’t even a phone in the video :/)

I got around to using the PureView in the afternoon. I’ll be uploading the pictures/videos of that soon (I’m just going to need to catchup on some sleep – I haven’t actually slept since Tuesday).

Looks like someone is trying to swipe the screen away :p

    • Silthice says:

once U try MeeGo, the gestures will come automatically… hehehe

    • FireDragon says:

      Haha, I noticed it too.

    • incognito says:

Had the exact same thought :D

Can’t be blamed, tho… Once you go swipe, you’ll attempt it on pretty much any device – the very same day I got my first N9, I attempted to swipe things off of my N900′s screen and was puzzled why in the world it doesn’t work. And it has been ever since with whatever mobile device I’m using.

And not only that, but double-tap to wake gets you addicted pretty fast as well. So much so that I caught my self attempting to wake up my MBP by double-tapping the touchpad…

Never seen those Nokia in-ears before. Like how they look and the tips look to be higher quality than the old Nokia boxed in-ears.

Not that i care as a long time HeadFi member and in-ear crazy, but still nice. :D

    • kunwar says:

they are the same that come with lumia 710 its just the internals might be different as lumia headset dont work with symbian n symbian headsets dont work with windows phone
model no. for lumia 710 headset is wh-208 and for the ones with 808 is wh-209
its same with n9 and lumia 800 headsets one is wh-901 n other is wh-902

      • Gäst says:

Thats because the TRRS (tip, ring, ring, sleeve) connector is wired differently.
Lumia uses AHJ wiring (American Headset Jack) left/right/ground/mic
Symbian uses OMTP wiring (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) left/right/mic/ground
The OMTP wiring is the one following standard.

      • Pdexter says:

Ah ok. Thanks for clearing it up.

  3. Jill says:

    Decent.
    Agree with Michael :)

  4. Dave says:

Not quite the first time this one was unboxed though, was it …. not sure Nokia (or anyone) is in the habit of leaving a device turned on and then sticking it in the box ;-)

Damnably jealous though, as it stands there’s no ideas when the UK will be officially getting them.

  5. NicKel says:

Jay, was that “Made in China”? Sotty, but the video is quite unclear on the video.

  6. songemax says:

http://vimeo.com/43596717 this is the world’s first real time unboxing of a retail unit, any unit in Nokia house is still not purchased from the market i suppose..this is from dubai, though ive heard that people in singapore have it since yesterday too…

    • Dave says:

(while turning the box around) “Its a box”
(while turning the phone around) “Well, its a phone”

      Documentation which nobody every reads.

And the final size comparison is fantastic. Will be interesting to see what he makes of the camera.

      • DM says:

Haha, that last bit did make me laugh XD

      • songemax says:

size comparision is good, and in the end with the phase one its so funny… a dslr will always be so damn big but an 808 was never made to be compared with a dedicated dslr… its the best in cameraphones/compact cameras… and i couldnt help but notice he likes white color, a white 808, a white iphone, and a white htc one x… imo, white looks better than black… and red looks best..but a bit too gaudy for my taste… but i wont get black, cmon almost all phones are already black or gray… white is a good change… white shows off the camera bump in a more enhanced way… :) cant wait to get it, tommorow in my country is the 808 bloggers event, and then after 1 to 2 weeks it will be in the market to purchase…

        • Dave says:

That Phase One camera is a step *above* a DSLR – its a medium format, and he’s got the 40mp (entry level!!!!) back – they also offer 60 and 80mp sensors.

The 40mp sensor offers a 10mp mode for improved sensitivity (ie. pureview)

£4k for the body, only price I’ve found for the 40mp back is (wait for it) …. £15k. The pureview won’t offer the same quality, but I’d still love to see a comparison just for the hell of it.

And if you’re interested, the 80mp back comes in at an eye-watering £30k.

    • YC says:

Already have here in Malaysia since yesterday, just play with it today at one of the Nokia retails here. The price is RM(Ringgit Malaysia) 1890. Spent some time there playing with it, love the camera very much, For camera phone lovers, this is a must have phone. Although the screen res is lower than many others, even my current Wave 1, but is hard to tell much different when I actually compare.

  7. lordstar says:

Belle fp1 really smooth now. The portrait to landscape transitions are done nicely. I hope this will somehow change the perception of the “laggy” symbian ui.

I wonder if the verge will even review the phone??

  8. RVM says:

No USB OTG cable. No HDMI cable… that’s dissapointing. Guess i will have to keep old ones from N8.

    • RVM says:

ehm.. seems there’s microHDMI port, while in N8 there was miniHDMI. :(

      • Lord US says:

Yeah, those ports with the N8 and the 808 have one thing in common with the iPhone. You can’t connect the phone to a TV without a special cable. So you either carry that special cable everywhere you go or you can’t connect.

        • Pdexter says:

There’s no phone that has HDMI port. How could you fit HDMI port to a phone. Actually it’s even rare these days to see phone with actual generic HDMI port, not Samsung or Apple connector.

I’m just super happy there’s HDMI port that actually outputs 1080. Could not be happier.

          • Lord US says:

Of course there isn’t a phone with a HDMI port. All those connectors just need a special adapter. I believe all the top manufacturers can output 1080 these days with their implementations. Well, how is it with the SGS3?

        • Or just buy a cheap $4 micro HDMI to HDMI adapter that pretty much fits even to smallest pockets. Like this one:

          http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-micro-male-to-hdmi-female-adapter-converter-45450

With iPhone you can’t get cheap standard adapters. Only Apple’s expensive proprietary crap. One more great thing about Nokia is that, unlike Apple, they follow standards.

        • incognito says:

Well, you need a special cable to connect a phone to USB as well, namely micro-USB one. Same goes for the connector on the 808PV – you need micro-HDMI cable to connect it to a HDMI-enabled device. It’s not a special cable, it’s a standard-defined port. No proprietary stuff or anything like you have with the competition.

          • James says:

            @incognito

            Don’t bother….
The guy’s purely tollyness & is clueless 50% of the time any way.

          • Lord US says:

            You missed the point.

It’s all about the connector. You have to have one with you all the time if you want to connect anywhere. Sure there are some small ones but you still have to carry one. Just like with the competition.

I have seen too many times people with Nokia phones unable to connect because they just don’t have that connector.

            • incognito says:

Again, how’s that different than with any other standard connection? How do you imagine connecting to HDMI without a cable, anyway? Same goes for USB – I’m still carrying a micro-USB cable with me in that rare occurrence that I might need it and there is not one in sight…

Sure, if you haven’t got a cable with you, and there is no micro-HDMI cable at the place you want to connect to, you obviously cannot, but on such event you can use DLNA wireless connection; just like you can use WiFi/BT syncing when you don’t have a micro-USB cable.

  9. Madratz says:

I got a suspicious feeling that Nokia purposely delayed their 808 launch while waiting for Jay to make the trip to Finland.. =D
    In ur honour Jay..
*well at least now that it has stated to sell in Singapore, I’ll call that a launch.. ;)

  10. Gäst says:

    Thanks Jay.
I hope you had fun at Nokia.

  11. Cod3rror says:

Jay, did you feel like Indiana Jones unboxing that ancient, outdated relic?

    • YC says:

Actually when I hold it in my hand, it doesn’t feel as relic as it should, is feels much better and solid.

    • KF says:

I’m not sure how you feel when your “revolutionary” 3.5″ screened overpriced iCrap drops to the floor, you’ll have a heart attack :P

    • RVM says:

He was talking about 808, not about iP4S.

    • torcida says:

      Please ban this basher “Cod3rror”!!
He is bashing also on gsmarena 24/7!!!

      Thanks

    • anon says:

I’ll laugh so hard if current phone is 4s. It’s hardware is outdated the day it was first announced.
Atleast 808 got its camera to show off.

  12. ahmed shouhdy says:

that’s another reason to buy a fixed focus video cam ! 70% of the video is blurry !!!

  13. dss says:

I love the fact that they put the TIPA and MWC awards on the box :)

  14. Quantom says:

    Find Pureview: http://vr-zone.com/pcshow/pricelists/nokia/94.html

I’m quite surprised to see that it’s not really being advertised with a bang – a pint-sized “41 megapixels” is all that accompanies the phone at the bottom of the page.

  15. goosepig says:

Weird how it comes with a hand-strap – I remember getting one of those with my N80!

  16. stylinred says:

how’d it feel in ur hands Jay? giant/fine? solid/flimsy?

  17. reptile says:

You guys should create a theme song to go with the opening animation.

  18. steelicon says:

I thought I would never ask this, but anyways, here it goes: Is there a way to disable autofocus (PureView and Full Resolution Modes) on both still photo and video mode? Is there an EDoF (Full Focus) Mode (PureView and Full Resolution Modes) on both still photo and video mode? Thanks!

  19. John says:

Looking awesome and your camera shoot is best one :)

Amazing pece of hardware and quality.
