Video: Nokia Asha 311 demo – looking smooth

| June 7, 2012 | 47 Replies

Here’s a hands on of one of the Full touch S40 Nokia Asha Touch handsets, the Nokia Asha 311 launched yesterday.

I think it’s also a lot more stylish than the 305/306 and feels nicer to use due to the capacitive display. It actually shows off how smooth and responsive parts of the UI is. I totally forgot about resistive displays in the 305 and initially thought it might be S40 touch being unresponsive – but the 311 is pretty nice to use. It’s as we’ve been expecting, based on the manuals – various many hints to stylings and interactions from N9.

A very decent offering in this price range. I’ll post up some videos when I get back to Manchester as I can’t upload that well on the hotel WiFi.

    Swiiiiipe

  2. DM says:

That is really amazing, what a improvement to S40! :)

  3. Irishmarius says:

very impressive on just a cheap device, hmm for a sec
i was like is this Meltemi , but no just S40 looking pretty nice lol.

  4. manu says:

i really doubt about such a thing called meltemi exist it may be internal code name of this modified s40.

    • nabkawe says:

After all, all of Nokia N9 essence is in this thing .

    • Bloob says:

Internal name for these is Sonic.

      • Bloob says:

To elaborate, there are 2 internal projects ( and codenames ), where Sonic is S40 touch, and Meltemi is supposedly a low end Linux device. Personal prediction is that Sonic is for 50€ – 100€, and Meltemi is for 80€ – 200€ devices.

        • jiipee says:

Agree with Bloob. And all the hints suggest that Meltemi will also be installed on a cheap tablet.

          • zlutor says:

            the real question is WHEN?

            • Janne says:

All past hints point to Q4 release for Meltemi, perhaps with a Q3 launch at Nokia World. I think it coming out on a 300-500 range Nokia phone is more likely initially than a cheap tablet, but you never know. They might introduce both or either of them.

Meltemi is sort of a halfway house between Sonic released yesterday (S40 full-touch) and the N9 (MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan). So expect something in-between those experiences, based on Linux and Qt of course.

              • Jiipee says:

The original target a long time ago has been 50e BOM for a phone and mid 2012 launch. Someone at TMO said that it is delayed for a good reason.

The analysts from Nomura bank must have been out drinking with Nokia people, who have said Summer 2012 launch.

              • zlutor says:

“So expect something in-between those experiences, based on Linux and Qt” – I expect exactly this kind of device. I follow the topic as close as I can for long time…

Hopefully it will be closer to N9 – at least at the ‘high-end’ of Meltemi range…

There was rumor about two comming Meltemi devices in the mid of 2012 – it would be good to be true…

        • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

Maybe for now but in couple of years time, I see S40 to be for just sub-$40 phones with Meltemi to be available for the rest of the range. The acquisition of smaterphone is for this reason since they have experience in linux-based phones between $25-75.

    • Prasenjit Singh Bist says:

it indedd exists as s40 is java and not Qt, so Qt for next billion will have some activity. thats first argument right.

second noki has acquired smarterphone and that work does not reflects in s40 , also nokia has hired linux developers and moved them to mobile phone what does that means …. something diff right.

if u have seen the leaked video Elop spoke about sonic and the full touch activity around series40 to make sure it continues to help in future and the underlying meltemi software effort. it will be and sud be a new OS will very lightweight kernel and minimum hardware requirements.,…

but please do not create any illusions like this will overlap with s40 in low end or with Symbian in mid…

that not if Nokia India guy is to be believed they will be their own ecosystems and portfolio like in mobile phones 111 may be the low end and asha 311 the highest that it its not overlapping wid anything same with Symbian the prev Nokia strategies to have products at diff strata of the value chain do not fit wid old nokia ways.

  5. stylinred says:

does it seem better than belle in some cases? oO heck i want one

  6. Maybe says:

    can this S40 multitask?

  7. Mac says:

Now this is nokia in top form! Blurring the lines between smartphone and dumbphones. The prices are its major selling point. The other great aspects are its smoothness and the ability of it to play all those games that you would normally only be able to play on with a higher end device. Those are awesome points to gather some momentum with these devices. The simplicity of the devices from a UI POV is great and easy for anyone to use.

What i would like to see Nokia incorporate now to make these devices a real threat is the inclusion of an fm transmitter, some basic multitasking and the ability to play dvb-h transmitions and they have the market for the taking. The lower end would never be the same!!

    Come on Nokia, do it!!!

  8. Ekeluo says:

You seem to be forgetting that the 305/306 have a QUARTER(!!!!) the RAM of the 311. Nokia still hasn’t learned. How much more would it have cost to spec them with 64 or 96mb RAM, 5 euros? 10? What horrible penny pinchers still allowed to make decisions.

    • ashok pai says:

if they get hit hard again, they have not learned anything from the past debacle. Nokia will simply allow / give way to low cost android builders, they are sweeping Nokia’s market anyways right about now.

    • Lord US says:

That RAM would cost too much if they want to keep the price down. Adding that ram would make the end user pay 10% more for the device. You may think that doesn’t matter but actually it does.

Making a low cost devie is all about getting the price down. That’s how you sell those.

  9. lordstar says:

Device is really smooth! Goodjob, value for the price indeed, though some would argue that the galaxy y has more apps and multitasking.. What could be our winning feature to compete with low budget androids? I fear for the resistive touchscreens of 305 and 306, it might not be as responsive compared to the 311

  10. Vikas patidar says:

305/ 306 is no way competitor to low end Androids. I have tried hand on 305 and it has horrible touch sensitivity. its crap device and touch is worst than C2-03 etc.

  11. SSs says:

It should have symbian belle or anna not s40

  12. ooulines says:

    clip 2, thailand ?

  13. jiipee says:

    The real IPhone (1) killer!

Seriously, if one compares the 611 with the original Iphone, where does it lose?

  14. James says:

    Looking okay…
Now let us know more about Meltemi already.

    • lordstar says:

True, I think we’re all getting positive feedback from the asha touch ui. Now imagine how meltemi devices would feel.

  15. Damen says:

The 311 is truly tempting! I really regret that I recently bought a C3-01.5 (updated C3-01 with 1 GHz CPU & more RAM) which serves as my second “backup phone”. The resistive touch screen is sometimes a real PITA…

  16. Carbontubby says:

Would it have cost that much more to have a capacitive screen on all the Asha devices? One or two Euros?

Resistive screens suck, period. People expect smooth and light touches to activate the UI and not having to prod at the screen and drag their fingertips. I fear this is one more example of Nokia’s bean counters screwing up potentially great products.

  17. burak says:

    looks better than belle :)

  18. Gokul says:

Nothing is needed if they include powerful HTML5 Browser it is enough to beat any thing

  19. Grendell says:

I have to hand it to Nokia. The 311 really looks promising! At it’s price point, I really haven’t seen anything that looks this nice inside and out. I hope it still manages to keep the awesome battery life and rugged durability Nokia is widely known for even at these price points. I also liked how they blurred out the bottom edge (wish they did the other end too) of the app drawer unlike the solid edge on the N9. It finally seems Nokia has something here that could put it back on the map at this segment and really has me looking forward to what meltemi will be like when it eventually comes to the fore. I wish they included an led flash/light though as it is a big thing at this price point for developing countries.

Ye this is 100% percent true , i have seen this at another site also,
it is SONIC and the Meltemi will fall in Oct-2012 with more multi tasking and linux power …
