Lumia 900 Image & Video Samples
So After playing around with my stormtrooper for the better part of a week I decided to take it out, show it the scenes, and most importantly do a camera test (I know a comparison against the Lumia 800 would have been perfect but unfortunately my dad chose a very bad time to require a spare phone; which was of course my 800- so my apologies). The Lumia 900 carries the now trademark Nokia/Carl Zeiss 8 Megapixel camera similar but not the same to that found in the N9/Lumia 800; Nokia have assured us that the 900 does not carry the same camera module; and promised better performance than seen with the Lumia 800; Scroll down to see for yourself.
Video:
The Rear Camera on the Lumia 900 has a 8Mp sensor capable of capturing 720p Videos; here’s a sample of the video quality I captured the other day in downtown Chicago (note the auto darkening/lightening to compensate for the direct sunlight):
The Front Facing Camera is nice little 1.3 MP camera that spits out both images and videos; the video quality looks superb when being played back on the screen while filming (the CBD under direct sunlight really helps make the colors “pop”); as usual the quality looks better on the actual device than when you put it on the laptop; yet I found that the quality was quite acceptable:
Images:
The Lumia 900 has some noticeable advantages over the the Lumia 800 when it comes to still photos; the focus on the phone is much smoother and doesn’t loose focus when getting too close (in Macro mode); over all the color reproduction is also more accurate with less “white-Balance interference” that had plagued the 800 giving it a bluish tint.
Low Light images are also Quite decent (as is almost unavoidable in all phones blacks tend to turn into Blues when capturing at night – except in the 808 of course).

Daylight Photos are pretty and appealing to the eye without giving off fake colors:
And this is a 100% crop of the previous image; not 808 quality but quite nice I think:
The following three pictures are samples from the Front Facing Camera; Nothing to write home about but not completely horrible either:

why are they all washed out :/ looks like trash ..and elop keeps pushing this ….WP….WP can’t take the camera mondule to it’s full potential like symbian….they should have stayedwith symbian and pushed MS out of the 3rd ecosystem
This is definitely primarily a hardware quality test, not software (e.g Titan 2 is very different again). Elop did not design the hardware as similar used in the N9 – he must have also designed the 808 hardware using your warped logic – which he did a great job on
Doh . . I am feeding the troll
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you – for demoing the front facing camera! There was only one other site (bwone.com) has even talked about the front facing camera. I realize that there basically is only one or two apps that utilize it, but when Nokia demonstrated the wide-angle feature of the front facing camera at CES (I think it was CES), I thought that it was pretty amazing what they did with it. Yet, no one, I mean NO ONE (except you and BWONE.COM) even bothered to demo it.
Great job (and nice photos)!
No problem, I think alot of people neglect the FFC because the output usually depends on your internet connection and compression of whatever program your using; but now that 4G is everywhere and mobile internet is more widespread it starts to make a difference.
Quite good quality, not amazing but good. Oh I wish my L800 had the same camera module and improvements
Good?! It is decidedly worse in comparison with iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S2, let alone N8 or even N9.
Some info about Lumia 900 camera performance can be found here:
http://www.sofica.fi/CamSpeed/index.php against other windows phone handsets
and against meego, android, wp here:
http://www.sofica.fi/CamSpeed/index.php?p=combined
Lumias (710, 800, 900) have fastest cameras compared to other windows phone phones, but some Android phones and N9 are even faster to take pictures, and so is iPhone4(s).
Info about measured variables here:

That is weird, they were saying the modules are the same….
So now they’re officially saying they’re slightly different, in what ways?
Could the difference in quality have something to do with different software versions? AFAIK, Lumia 900 comes with Tango preinstalled, and the Lumia 800s out there are still waiting for Tango.
Yeah that’s what the story was most of the time…
That it’d have some optimisations, some or all of which would eventually come to L800.
Quality is just average. Nothing special.
Off-Topic: Nokia to cut 10,000 jobs after weak second quarter
Seems like Nokia is trying to compensate weak sales.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-14/nokia-to-cut-10-000-jobs-as-elop-tries-to-stanch-losses.html
BTW: Also on the outs are three executives including chief marketing officer Jerri Devard, executive VP of mobile phones Mary McDowell and executive VP of markets Niklas Savander who will step down from the company’s Leadership Team effective June 30th.
Mark my words: This is the end of Qt in Nokia products and the end of Meltemi.
The lumia 900 is better than the N9 and like the iphone 4s quality if you use your own settings… and I’ve seen someone take really kool pics from is L800 and I couldn’t believe he used the 800.
I have used the 800 a lot for camera comparisons and the more you use it , the better the photos tend to get, for macro, using touch and hold to focus gets better results than using the physical camera button, honestly don’t think the camera on the 900 is any better than the 800, having said that, nice post Ali
I have seen pictures taken by the L800 and I can say its better than the 4s. the L900 is not as good as the 800 but if you master it you can take better pictures with it. I will like jay to set up a flickr account where members of the blog can upload their pics taken from their phones and we will see which phone brings out the best quality and aperture… so far L800 aperture even beats the N8 from a picture I saw on flickr. Guys cant cheat because of exif if you take your picture with cannon the info will tell us all.
only a fool would select Lumia 900 when there is a superphone 808 pureview available
I really like these pictures. Currently I own a SE Xperia Arc S, which produces great pictures (same camera as Xperia Arc, best camera phone of 2011). Especially in dark environments. My 12-month plan can be prolonged from of this month which means I can get a new phone. Now I know the Sony Xperia S produces great pictures, and the Sony Xperia TX will be released soon. So now I have to decide whether to get a new Sony phone, or maybe back to Nokia. Can anybody tell me how the Lumia 900 camera is compared to the Xperia S, or even TX? I quit using Nokia because of symbian a few years ago, but with Windows I would want to give it a try to see how I feel about it.
I would say it’s unlikely to match up, I have the 900 & camera-wise it’s a real disappointment, the N9 would be more appealing to you in that regard.
With the next gen. of WP phones, Nokia will have had time to improve core_sw & hw aspects, such they may finally be approaching the likes of the N86 etc.
