Press Release: Nokia to acquire developers, technologies and intellectual property for imaging from Scalado
Here are the individual press releases from the big news unveilled today. First up, Nokia getting Scalado.
As I mentioned before, Scalado has some very exciting stuff related to imaging. Scalado PhotoFlow on Symbian was pretty cool, as well as the enhanced camera effects with Scalado’s face timemachine thing (as highlighted most recently by BB10, who did not mention Scalado at all).

Acquisition aimed at enhancing imaging experiences for Nokia Lumia devices
Espoo, Finland and Lund, Sweden: Nokia is announcing plans to acquire world-class imaging specialists as well as all technologies and intellectual property from Scalado AB.
“Nokia has been working with Scalado for more than ten years and they’ve contributed to many of our leading imaging applications,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Smart Devices at Nokia. “This transaction would enable us to combine our leadership in camera devices with their expertise in imaging, helping people move beyond taking pictures to capturing moments and emotions and then reliving them in many different ways.”
The Lund site is planned to become a key site for Nokia’s imaging software for smartphones, in addition to Nokia’s existing locations in Espoo and Tampere, Finland.
“This is a great opportunity for many of our people to show their leadership in imaging and to continue to build its future,” said Håkan Persson, chief executive officer of Scalado AB. “Doing this as part of Nokia, already a leader in mobile imaging, will reinforce the strength of the technologies and competences developed at Scalado. We are very excited about this opportunity, which is a natural next step in our longstanding relationship with Nokia.”
The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close during the third quarter of 2012. The terms of the transaction are confidential.

hmmm…One more reason to by Nokia..This is what we call Restructuring..They have to cut back on money wasted and acquire the neccessary tools to make them stronger.
License agreements anyone?
Acquiring the company\devs is a good idea for improving the imaging technologies but Nokia could have phrased the press release little better. Telling that they are acquiring the company to improve the Lumia devices means that the current techs on them aren’t good.
Also, it it ironical that they mention Lumia since Scalado doesn’t support Windows Phone yet. The product page shows Android, iPhone & Symbian and mentions “Available on all embedded platforms”.
It can be on any OS

They may release it in all platforms in future but currently there website doesn’t mention Windows Phone anywhere.
In the article, they mention “the code is platform-independent and can be used on any OS”. Wonder how they did it unless they wrote in C++ with OpenGL. If they did so, it would mean a rewrite for Windows Phone.
True. But their technology is already on Lumia. Remember the BB10 rewind feature? Nokia Lumia cameras already have this demoed.
Microsoft already has the technology.
sorry for the double post.
Microsoft already has the technology in Photo Fuse. It was first released in beta as Group Shot in 2007. The engine then was rolled into Photo Fuse found in Windows Live Photo Gallery. According to Wikipedia, “It was announced at Bill Gates’ keynote at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show.”
Great, so Nokia sold their other assets, & doubled-up on this tech that MS already has why exactly?
Most likely for patents. While Microsoft has the tech, it is for the desktop. Scalado probably has the patents that allow that type of integration with mobile devices. Also, Scalado seems to have other technologies in imaging.
Well lets hope it really was worth selling other items & investing in it.
None of us can really ever know for sure, looking from the outside.
But in the fullness of time, hopefully it will become more evident.
HTC announces yesterday they are staying out of low end price market.
just out of the Nokia call, a Morgan Stanley analyst asked about meltemi and Stephen Elop clearly denied saying he ever made any public reference to that and then followed that a number of R&D projects have been cancelled all emphasis on series 40, series 30 and windows phone…
