Video: Nokia 808 PureView vs Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy SIII

| July 2, 2012 | 38 Replies

In this video, the Nokia 808 PureView is compared with the brother, N8, and the Kpop SGSIII.

The 808 video looks a lot more stable than the N8 right? I think the continuous AF of the 808 is most superior. You can see some delay and focus hunting in the SGSIII when either N8 or 808 had already focused.

Without looking at the video, you can immediately tell which is the Nokia 808 PureView because of rich recording:

  • Super high quality rich sound. Nokia 808 PureView is spectacular, N8 is superb, SGSIII almost sounds painful in comparison.
  • Stereo
  • Actual left right stereo channel separation (left recorded on the left, right on the right, where as N8 is front and side)  which makes playback of the stereo a much more realistic experience. If something moves from left to right, you can see and hear it. This isn’t talked about enough and is an extremely overlooked feature that I have no doubt Nokia will fail to talk about.

There’s a full on comparison post here:

Dammit, where are my Nokia 808 PureView adverts that scream about this being THE BEST CAMERA PHONE IN THE WORLD!!!!!! It is absolutely unrivalled! I wish Nokia would quit being so damn coy and actually shout about the things their good at.Vid

Hardly worth comparing now.. 808 is just too good.

  2. NeNoRmAl says:

To be honest, GS3 video looks more clear and crisp at some parts.

And that observation is not based only on this video, I think there is room for imrpovement on video clarity on 808.

But overall(video+saoud), yeah, 808 PureView is THE BEST! =]

    • Harangue says:

Noticed something similar, 808 is still better, but the GS3 can beat the N8 when all things are considered. I mean, the N8 is still a bulky and aging device, the GS3 is a modern, fast and sleek device and yet it still snaps some pretty good pictures and video.

For all the glory the 808 deserves, it isn’t a good PHONE. It is an excellent camera, but as a device that should also do all the other things a phone should do I think it’s just mediocre. The better package is the GS3 in this comparison.

      • Dave says:

Er … Symbian tends to be a good phone, thats been something that Nokia got right all along.

If you mean “hasn’t got shedloads of applications, most of which are of negligible use”, then the GS3 edges it.

But if you use the phone to make/take calls, browse the web a bit, play the occasional game, take photos, there’s nothing in it.

At this moment, I am thinking to switch to Android, but I am yet to find a device that really attracted me. Choosing Nokia 808 is similar to choosing a device that have a future technology attached to a old age technology.

While, choosing an android device is similar to having modern feature attached to modern technology.

After having Nokia N8, I don’t really want to switch to a phone with lower performance in term of the camera.

However, I do care about having a good operating system, I was expecting a good future for Symbian when I bought my N8 on January 2011. I find it hard to choose an operating system for a device that is getting less and less support too.

“Siilasmaa :: … he clearly refused that Symbian will never come again”

If you really care about using a smartphone like what you used to do on Symbian few years ago, e.g. features, customisation, apps. Will you choose Symbian just because of the camera? Which device should I go if I really want to change from Symbian?

          • Nazty111 says:

go for the gs3. it is really nice. i couldnt go for the 808 after having n97 and n8. i loved them but needed something fresh.

            • twig says:

The Sammy gave me a headache from being so blurry in comparison. I have yet to see anything I like about the Sammy 3 over a lumia 900.

        • Harangue says:

Phone might have not been the right word to describe what I meant. What you point out as phone use I wouldn’t want to do on the 808. Browse the web is just a giant PITA, gaming can be done but I’d say the better titles can be found on Android.

Besides the real use cases I’d also say that the general ‘sluggishness’ of Symbian can become annoying. I don’t know if the GS3 is fluid, but going by GS2 performance I’d say the 808 is easily defeated. So that leaves the 808 with only stellar performance from the camera, good call quality and being frugal with its battery, although that last point is debatable since Anna and Belle came along for Symbian.

In that light I also see why Nokia isn’t promoting the heck out of the 808. It just isn’t worth it, unless they promote it as a camera that can also make and receive calls.

BTW; I really love what Nokia did with the 808, but realisticly it is a real good camera. If that is what you want in a phone then go for it. If you use your device more as a phone, browser or gaming thing the 808 isn’t the best device for you.

          • twig says:

My brother has a Sammy 2 and finds my 900 more fluid. Perhaps the Androids malware problems slow his up by now? His seems to crash too. Is that a malware problem? I know Kaspersky said Android has a huge problem with that. Hope he doesn’t have malware.

        • ashok pai says:

“hasn’t got shedloads of applications, most of which are of negligible use”

I’m sorry disagree with that. lot of people tend to say an app is a website with front end. even if thats the case the app is simply more simple to use. take the example of the recently released google analytics apps on symbian – my friend swears by it, he is very happy that the app has appeared on the store. there are countless apps and services that are missing on nokia store. evernote finally came to nokia in the form of notekeeper. the Qt platform is finally showing promise but alas, it’s of no use. the existing symbian customers can use their phone happily for one last time with existing handsets – perhaps the 808 being the greatest symbian phone ever.

          but dismissing apps is foolishness.

      • Jay Montano says:

Credit where credit is due, like the SGSII, the SGSIII is indeed a pretty great package as a full smartphone with quite an OK standard for camera now.

I think 808 is a great ‘phone’ as to the ‘smartphone’ side of it, well that depends on what you need it to do. Having a great browser seems to be something the reviews aren’t agreeing with.

Where camera is concerned it will always be about 808 PureView. The consistent feel amongst the higher profile blogs is that they’d like to see PureView on other platforms too, to have a fuller all around package.

      • Just Visiting says:

        +1.

Although I had a chuckle when you said the N8 was aging – I think the N8 IS aged :)

I guess I’ll still use my N8, but only until the WP8 Lumia’s hit the shelves.

  3. benjimola says:

808 is amazing… Samsung is good, but I think is no better than lumia 900 on video recording. N8 is a good cam phone I believe the comparison is not fair. The n8 might be better than sgs3 but its using old screen technology vs the super amoled etc.

  4. stylinred says:

there are positives and negatives with each and at times better performance from one compared to the other two be it the 808, n8, sgs3

  5. krustylicious says:

If the 808 was the last ever symbian phone then it should have gone out with dual core, pureview camera and screen ..

That would have really have turned heads.

  6. Andrew_b says:

I’m picking up on Jay wondering why Nokia don’t shout from the rooftops about the 808.

I had an idea for an 808 advert following the Nokia tagline that ‘It’s all about the detail’.

I imagine an advert based on a single exposed image of a staged crowd scene depicting people using mobile phones, cameras, etc. Only one person is using the 808. The others are either juggling their cameras/phones/camcorders, talking on mobiles but still sporting an SLR around their neck, or having trouble taking a good shot with a mobile. The point of view pans and zooms to show how detailed the image is before finally zooming out to reveal the image in question was being captured by a person holding the 808. The advert declares that ‘It’s all in the detail’ and states that the 808 captures detail which cannot even be seen by the human eye.

The other (less developed) advert idea I had concentrates on Facebook and shows a whole load of shitty, grainy Facebook uploaded images and compares them to great ones taken by the 808. I see sooo many shitty pics on Facebook, nearly all from iPhoners, not to mention their dumb-ass portrait videos! (LOL)

  7. incognito says:

Hmmm, while N8 is aging and all, I think something is wrong with it in this comparison. My friend has an N8 and it produces significantly better video than this *confused*

    • stylinred says:

its cuz of where the light is coming from the n8 has an issue where it’ll glare up like that easily

      • MoritzJT says:

Mhm, looks like the lense cover glass is not as clean as it should.

I’ve begun using a small cylinder to prevent lenseflares…

      • Dronex says:

I’ve taken endless hours of footage by my trusty N8 since december 2010 but I have never seen such shitty video. It’s not about the light coming from certain angle, it’s about inability of that person/certain_N8 of taking a good video. Peace out

  8. Banderpop says:

Advertising would be nice, but Nokia need to be able to meet demand first, before increasing the demand. The 808 doesn’t appear to stay in stock in many places for very long. I wonder if Amazon.co.uk were able to fulfil all the pre-orders?

    • stylinred says:

looks like amazon.co.uk removed the 808 from the site?

      • stylinred says:

not only that but the nokia UK front page shows the 808 but you cant click on the link -_-

you have to search for the 808 to be taken to its page where theres a link to Amazon but amazon says that the device is not available and to “sign up” (not preorder) to be notified

        • Banderpop says:

Looks like the story about O2 selling the 808 from the 30th of June turned out to be false too.

Is that it? I get the impression that there are more 808 review units being given out for free than there are 808s available to buy. Which doesn’t add up to a lot as none of the MNB main writers seem to have one yet either.

          • MoritzJT says:

I’ve asked Nokia to provide me that sweet swag bag and added a bunch of good reasons on why they should do so.
            Worked.

I am quite confident, that any of the frequent writers here would have easily the same track record to qualify for a review kit. Really weird that their MAIN non official Blog does not have one…

  9. Tak says:

If only you could find the 808 from some where!!! :( Release it Elop!!!

  10. N9-user says:

Had a play with the 808 in HK IFC mall, Nokia store. Sweet! It’s available pre-order with bundle including EyePatch cover, gorilla tripod, extra battery charge tube, and somethign else… for only $4500 HKD…I think that’s what he said… hmm… must check again… Can anyone currently in HK confirm?

  11. hentaisama says:

I have a n8 and i can say the video quality is better than the published one.

  12. Doug says:

There is something wrong with that N8. It should not look like that at all.

  13. miki says:

I gor mine from amazon.de, was waiting one month!

    Preorder for 509€!

  14. Danny says:

I bet the N8 had a dirty lens. Washed out picture, weak colors, etc.. I compared a N8 with an iPhone 5, and at first I was shocked as well about how bad the N8 was. Then I cleaned its lens, and all of a sudden it was equal if not better than the iPhone 5.

    Keep those lenses tidy!!!

  15. Reflex says:

What of Nokia E7, come in time of the camera blight is good as well. Also in time of internet operation is very fast, i think E7 and 808 the compare is alike.
