Lumia more popular search term than Windows Phone, (Same with Nokia vs Apple)

I thought I already wrote up this post to be scheduled but it seems not. Anyway, this story is about how web searches for Lumia had been eclipsing Windows Phone since pretty much the moment Nokia Lumia was announced.

As much as some die hards Windows Phone fan may want to deny it, people pay attention to Windows Phone because of Nokia and Nokia essentially rescued Windows Phone from certain oblivion (at their own expense) to which they are now pretty much fused in terms of destiny.

The use of a name in a Nokia line up was one of the earliest things I ranted about. On top of a brand name you can build a reputation

http://mynokiablog.com/2009/12/21/video-nokia-zero-why-the-next-flagship-needs-a-proper-name/

No matter what happens to an old model, you’ve always got the main brand to build earn recognition. Nokia did this a little bit with the N95 (N95 8GB) but then lost its way in polluting Nseries with craptastic devices.

Think of iPhone, Galaxy S – they instantly get the user to associate any reputation from the older devices with the newest one. It’s also easier to remember. It’s an iPhone – it’s the latest Galaxy S, and now, Lumia.

Despite possibly higher news reference to Windows Phone than lumia on its own, more people care about the Nokia Lumia than Windows Phone. It’s not really Windows Phone they’re after, but Nokia Lumia and the experience of Lumia (which, yes it’s WP but Nokia has made that their identity).

To give this some context though, N8 still gets a higher search ranking than Lumia at their highest peaks.

All dwarfed by Galaxy S

Relative to iPhone searches, it’s all a bit of a blip on the radar for all of those combined. Now iPhone has been around now since 2007. What Apple did best of all was not the product itself, but the branding, the association, the imagery, the culture, the reputation around iPhone, iOS and iPad.

iPhone is a more popular search term than Apple.

But Nokia still teeters back and forth between being a more popular search term than Apple.

Does it mean much? Well, that people are still looking for Nokia things. It should not, by any means, suggest any cause for celebration.

This just proves how dull Windows Phone is.

Well, at least Elop got his wish. Nokia is undisputed leader in the almost non-existing market of WP phones. No other company was stupid enough to bet its future on the underperforming (to put it mildly) WP platform.

Even if WP8 is a hit (not likely), Nokia has spend all of its value just to keep the uncompetitive WP7 on the market and will be associated with them (i.e. with utter failure).

    • BellGo says:

Yup, the situation is pretty grim for Nokia.

    • ashok pai says:

just means one thing – microsoft better up the ante and pay Nokia much more in advertising support. microsoft is clearly doomed – it’s mindshare in mobile space is NOT increasing. at least Nokia has made decent progress with whatever sales its been doing, plus the name lumia has caught on. microsoft might as well rename their phones as lumia. (it was a big mistake to name their OS as “windows” to begin with)

They will have to keep Nokia afloat if they want to get the best out of the brand name (whatever value it has left) before letting them sink.. Maybe they didn’t anticipate for Nokia to go kaput so quickly, but oh well..

Overall that is what I would do if I was in Microsoft’s position. Its the cheapest way to gain traction. Also, they can use whatever hardware designs and technologies Nokia has going on… PureView, etc.

Then, when Nokia’s stock is .. 1 euro, use some investment company (that has no legal ties to MS) to buy Nokia… with Elop in place already, they will have what they wanted all along.

“with Elop in place already, they will have what they wanted all along.”

yup, sadly, this is panning out exactly like all those conspiracy theories.

It shows people look at hardware rather than software.

  3. Mike says:

It proves it was a mistake using Windows in mobile devices. Nokia should have promoted the Nokia brand and N9 instead.

This shows that users aren’t interested in Windows in mobile devices.

    • twig says:

I own both and unless you have all those android apps lined up for the N9, forget it. Even then, the Windows app seem better.

NOK stock at $1.93 USD. Windows Phone is a joke. Nokia should’ve chosen Android and MeeGo as its smartphone OSes. Samsung uses Android, Bada/Tizen and Windows Phone.

“Nokia essentially rescued Windows Phone from certain oblivion (at their own expense) to which they are now pretty much fused in terms of destiny.” –> For Nokia’s sake, let windows 8 be successful.

Ah, some good old fashion honesty. Thanks Jay.

I don’t think WP 8 will change much, and even if it will I doubt that other manufacturers would just ignore it, thus Nokia having to compete with them. (I am yet again questioning the “logic” behind going only WP)

  8. Jordi says:

Wow, you are doing the job of the marketing dept of Nokia…

  9. JGrove303 says:

I just discovered last night that Cave Co. Ltd., on of the grand arcade shooter developers, have a port to Windows Phone 7 entitled DoDonPachi Maximum.

Considering the rest of their entries have been exclusive to iOS, that is a great sign of developer interest.

Nokia and WP8 will do great as long as the features and dev interest stay on the up.

  10. ashok pai says:

that’s a fantastic return rate for galaxy S enterprise i must say ! the sales are phenomenally high compared to volume of sales!

  11. deep space bar says:

what’s the point of this article ….if it’s the same os :/

  12. incognito says:

Well, if we stick to Google Trends, Symbian was more popular search than Windows Phone ’til couple of months ago, and that is with more than three-fold news coverage for the latter in the past two years and the platform EOLed.

The Nokia N9 would’ve easily beaten the Nokia Lumia 800 were it not for India – it’s still more popular search term even in Finland, let alone other countries where Lumia didn’t receive, shall we say, a stellar acceptance. All except India, which is puzzling given that Lumia had a lackluster treatment there as well…

Anyway, while it might be fun to compare unrelated terms and come up with conclusions, basing an opinion or an argument on Google Trends data would be childish, to put it mildly…

  13. inept says:

It’s very hard to search for “Galaxy S” and expect meaningful results. You should include:

    “Galaxy S”
    “Galaxy S2″
    “Galaxy SII”
    “Galaxy S3″
    “Galaxy SIII”

The reason is that “Galaxy S” excludes the substance of the product group.

Searching merely for “Galaxy” would be too broad a group of data, but might be more representative of the actual data you’re looking for. Alternately, you could try “Samsung Galaxy”.

Elop’s finger tips must be wearing out :-D

  15. Jim Fufupotry says:

Those are only statistics, and statistics can be extreamly easy to maniplate people when one has a thesis to be proved. This is entirely different case from objective overview. Math and stat are tools only. The same way a mobile is a tool: when you have a conversation through a mobile with somebody, you don’t have any guaranies you can hear only true or only lies. Tool does not provide this, only the person who is speaking – always remeber about this.

    • BellGo says:

… I have no idea what you are trying to say here.

      • viktor von d. says:

        no surprise there

        • BellGo says:

Wow. Such an insightful comment, now as you are evidently much smarter than me, please explain how that comment relates to this article.

Is Jay misusing the data provided by objective search results? No. Is Google deliberately hiding Windows Phone searches? It is beyond obvious that not.

          So again, please enlighten me.

          • Proffesionl Enlighter (ASSHOLE) says:

The enlightening is reserved as a price for joga hard practising gurus and Steve compatibile mates.
To undestand it a better insight in between lines and in between words is needed. In the same way: more math and stat understanding is needed to understand what is behind a particular research.
In shortcut: be smarts don’t let the dark side of the force to full you.
Or make a statistical experiment: go to your street and ask let’s say 10 accidentaly choosen by you person but only unknown to you and every one walking in an opposite direction then last one, ask “what a system do you have in your mobile?” – then you can find your own enlightement. It is out there. And let us know what have you found.
When you ask 100 you will be more enlighted even.

            • BellGo says:

Aand that does not relate to this article, does it?

              • Hezio (ASSHOLE) says:

How do u think? Your answer would be interesting I think :)

The words apple an n8 might not be the best comparisons as they could easily be about apples the food, and n*8 could refer to lots of things other than the nokia n8.
