Nokia Drive 3.0 Update Live Now

The latest update to the already feature filled Nokia service for WP “Nokia Drive” just hit version 3.0 bringing some pretty cool features such as:

  • My Commute learns your driving preferences and uses information about the latest traffic conditions to get you there faster. According to Nokia “This revolutionary feature is so new that we are going to roll it out selectively based on the available traffic data. We are then going to collect experiences that we can learn from and that will help us improving the service. The first country where My Commute is going to be availableis the United States.”
  • Automatic day/night mode for optimum visibility – self explanatory
  • Pin to start: find your way with a tap – you can pin your favorite destinations and routes right to your start screen

Worth noting that the features seen above are what Nokia showcased at the WP summit and promised to bring to the current devices, if my count is correct they’ve delivered the “play to” app, the camera extensions to some markets and now Maps 3.0; leaving only the “data counter” and the promised Zynga games to be released hopefully soon.

EDIT: It would seem that another feature added is the ability to set favorites “as a destination” as well as saving a favorite from the drive screen itself; which is something I’ve been asking for for months, Yay!

This shows clearly how Nokia is holding back Harmattan, as Nokia Drive on N9 had the automatic day/night feature hidden in code since PR1.2!

    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=85353

    Hidden features:
    - Auto day/night change
    - show Traffic
    - route by Optimal way based on traffic information
    - show ETA on UI
    - change between DTD and ETA on UI

You can’t say now that I shouldn’t blame Elop for it! Even more when you know what the hidden codes comment says:

“TODO: change back when management makes up their minds”

So they disabled features by order from management. Clearly because it would have had more features than Nokia Drive on WP.

Strange that you report about WP Drive 3.0 and not about N9 Drive which has got some of that features first by community hacks and had most of those features hidden in code by ages. I tipped this and told Jay several times, he even responded that he would report about it days ago…….

I really liked Mynokiablog alot, but since Nokia World 2011 it started to get biased somehow.

    • James says:

Yup, been following that thread at TMO, tis really sad.
I dont think you can blame jay for not reporting it…
It’s not exactly end-usr friendly having to hack all this stuff in just because maemo/meego’s no longer part of LT plans.*
MNB is more about reporting what’s out there for the “general” end-user.

*there has long been a pattern of this, this observation you’re making WRT ND isn’t the 1st example & wont be the last.

I know, right?! The N9 drive makes the Symbian drive look completely ghetto!

You can’t even “pull forward” with your finger to look ahead and around in Symbian, it just weirdly goes from route point to next route point.

I agree with certain parts of your post XD

Those features are also officially available in Nokia Drive on N9 since PR1.2. Just wanted to say :)

    • AliQudsi says:

I’m not sure what tips go to jay but this is the first I hear of these hidden features, would be idiotic if it was hidden on purpose, are you sure they’re just not fully ready?

Anyways I’m aware some of these features are available on Symbian and meego ages ago, which is why I was constantly asking for them to come to WP.

As for bias I’m simply reporting the latest update, as I mentioned I wasn’t aware of the hidden features list you mentioned, will take. A look into it though. Cheers

      • Morpog says:

Some of theme were not fully ready, but fixed by community in a matter of a few days. Some of theme were ready and commented out in code by order of management.

This line comes straight from qml source code of Nokia Drive disbling traffic feature:

“TODO: change back when management makes up their minds”

      • Morpog says:

Also that bias comment by me was not against you in person, but more against this blog in general. It’s just my personal feeling about this blog since Nokia World 2011.

    • Pino says:

Hi guys, this is Pino from Nokia.
Let’s get back to reality a bit here ;-)
Nokia Drive for both Symbian and Nokia N9 are more featured advanced than Nokia Drive for Nokia Lumia, just as AliQudsi said. This is a fact because we had much more time to develop for other platforms than Windows Phone. But we are catching up and introducing also some completely new features like My Commute.
So, there is no reason to hold back anything here. If we can improve Nokia Drive for Nokia N9, we simply do it, but our smartphone strategy is clear: in moving forward we will naturally concentrate on Windows Phone development. Nothing new here since February 2011.
I don’t know anything about that comment in the code, but I wouldn’t give so much importance to it.

      • viipottaja says:

Thanks. Lots of tinfoil hats around anything to do with Nokia nowadays. The truth is out there. :P

      • James says:

Well aliqudsi didn’t say that, that was moporg’s point, he simply mentioned WP’s “new” features.
I don’t think he did it deliberately though, I think….

“So, there is no reason to hold back anything here. If we can improve Nokia Drive for Nokia N9, we simply do it.

Really, and why wouldn’t you give so much importance to it Pino?
There’s been many other examples of features not activated for seemingly trivial reasons.
Features that are almost finished (if not already) & with some community testing have been deployable WITHOUT Nokia’s help.
And where is Nokia Car Mode, we still hear zilch about it…
It was launched for S^3 in January, & promised countless times for the N9 last year.
(*update* FINALLY out recently; but zero effort in communicating this, + there’s no free version w/o mirror-link!)
Nice to see you pro-actively posting all over MNB to reassure WP users, but no such courtesy for S^3/Maemo 6x users.
All in all a rather unfriendly post towards your Maemo 6x users there Pino.

Overall I like the 3.0 on my Nokia Lumia with Windows 7.5. The ability to pin a favorite location to a button on the main screen means you have a one press access for directions to your house, for example. Jump in the car, press a button, drive and the voice guides you home. Great.

Also great are the downloadable maps – and navigation independent of having a data signal – touring wine country in California, we often lose data signal, iphones and droids in the car are lost. My Lumia keeps on talking us all the way to the next winery. Very valuable for keeping the party going.

However the lack of street name voice announcement has gotten me into trouble on more than one occasion. “Turn Right at the junction” is often stated by the app when there are two off ramps right next to each other – this forces a dangerous glance at the screen to READ the street name and risky last minute swerves. The app knows the street name (they are displayed on the screen) why can’t it use that data to say “Turn Right at the junction for Highway 70″ or “turn right at the junction for the B Street”. Seems simple enough and would improve the product by a mile.

there used to be automatic day/night colours on the symbian version of nokia maps, but ever since the new maps suite, it just disappeared and became manual…

    • AliQudsi says:

I knew that wasn’t my mind playing tricks on me, thought I was going crazy :D

Anyways auto lighting is one of those small things that makes a huge difference.

  4. Tomwhat says:

Just read the thread on tmo. IT clearly is hidden by purpose and it Shows just another time how afraid elop and Co are/were that N9 gets a success. IT could have also become auf success for Nokia despite all the ecosystem crap

  5. DesR85 says:

Downloaded it unto my L800 as mentioned previously and liking the new features, particularly ‘Save Location’. :)

  6. gajomau says:

still can´t use my favorites saved online on nokia maps that i gathered during many years i’m using nokia maps on symbian.. yes i can use them on nokia maps on the wp, but can’t use them on nokia drive.. that is very annoying and stupid..

    • Morpog says:

That works on N9 too since PR1.2. Using my favorites which I created on N8 ages ago.

      • gajomau says:

that´s what i want.. to sync my favorites with my n8.. still a long path to go the wp version.. not half has good as the symbian or meego version

        • blue_crim says:

erm… does nokia drive in lumia have the “home location” settings like in n9? Dad’s been looking all over for it and he’s going bananas not finding the options. and as I read above, the feature still not there in drive 3? can somebody please confirm, thanks :)

          • arts says:

I don’t think so. However, you can save locations to Nokia drive now, and I guess that can double as the home location feature. You can pin it to homescreen too.

Source : quick check from my lumia.

  7. migo says:

I don’t drive, but I downloaded it as a passenger when construction had messed us up, and it worked very quickly. Much better than the original version when I first tried it out in Feb.

No speed camera/safety camera alerts still????
