YLE reports that the Salo factory in Finland was shut down on Friday and will close permanently in Autumn (September).

The last phone built there was made on Wednesday.
This is part of Nokia’s cost cutting measures, which means phones can be built more quickly and efficiently hopefully meaning Nokia can adapt better to the constantly changing markets.

so they were still making phones?
iirc janne said they stopped making phones back in march
wonder if they made any 808s? haven’t seen any made in finland 808s :/
They were “customising” devices since then.
ah ic
First of all, sad news. Expected news of course, since the June shower and with all the competitors already moved assembly to Asia and so on, but still sad news.
As for Salo only customizing – that is correct. Salo was used for software/packaging customizations since spring only, that was the previous cut. Putting ready-assembled phones into packages and loading operator-specific softwares etc. Think of it like this: e.g. Compal built pallets of Lumia 800′s in China, shipped it to Salo (for European market units), who put it into a generic Nokia or specific e.g. T-Mobile Germany box, loaded the relevant generic of operator-specific software into it, added manuals etc… But that too is now stopping come fall in Salo.
I think Salo will still have a small R&D office, but that was always separate from the factory. I guess the N9 may have been the last, at least last major device manufactured in Finland (it was also manufactured in Asia for certain markets).
just got my 808 this week in Switzerland and it came from China. I think however most N9s sold here came from Salo. Dunno if Salo ever produced any 808.
ah ic guess not; janne got an 808 in finland and its from china as well and mine from france is from t he same place
ah well I still had some hope that id see a made in finland 808 guess not :/
Correct. All 808′s are being made in China. A Finland-bought 808 here too.
Dammit! I better get used to cheapo China quality now. The least they could have done is to supply Europe with phones made in Finland.
Nonsense, even Chinese made Nokia’s are made to specifications set by Nokia. Quality would be the same as it would be when they were made in Salo, as long QC is good of course.
IPhones are made in China, no cheapo quality there in general.
ive never had any problems with my phones that came from Finland can’t say the same for the ones that came from China my 808 being a wonderful example
you do realize all iphones are made in China too
…and I’m not quite relaxed with the rattling noise, that the iPhone 4S does, nor am I very confident with its “durability”.
How does closing factories speed up phone manufacturing? Unless they are doing everything in one place.
I really Nokia priding themselves on making phones locally to where they were to be sold, less pollution. Guess
cause all the parts are made in china and asia. they have to ship them to finland, then assemble the phones then ship them again to their final destination. it causes delays, suplimentary costs and more expensive handsets. i understand the measure but i wished they had kept at least one factory in europe for the high end, special projects. we love in europe products made home.i had a nokia made in finland and now i am using one made in hungary. quality is outstanding. hope they will return if they will turn their fortunes around in the next years.
Welcome to Microsoft world!
Where even factories are getting burned after burning platforms and softwares!
This has got nothing to do with Microsoft. During OPK era Nokia closed factories too. I think some Germans might have recollections of that… Mostly this is about everyone moving to Asia, Nokia was the last company to mass-manufacture mobile phones in Europe. The last. Think about it.
I think Nokia should be commended for sticking it out this long. But of course, very, very sad news for all the people affected. I too would have wished more manufacturing would have stayed in Finland and in Europe, but that is not the world we live in. Apple and Samsung don’t do it here.
And this is Elopocalypse Part…what again? 10 or 11?
So my Nokia N9 64Gb Made in Finland is even more rare now
Just one more reason to chose something else than Nokia.
Made in China, american OS and Ecosystem. Wall Street investors owning the company.
No wonder the European economy is down the drains… Enjoy your cheap goods while you have jobs and money…
…and what are you going to choose now?
It does not really matter.. but probably some kind of Android OS phone.
android os/ecosystem is american
android phones made in china
choose again…..
read again….
Get a life M$”Nokia”
LOL! You don’t have a reply, do you?
Pretty much every competing phone is made in China or Asia now.
Stupid haters.
Like I said: It does not really matter. The problem is that if all production is move to the far east many people will be out of jobs. I.e. have no money for any phones at all. Mr. Henry Ford had a better approach. His philosophy was that the workers in his car factories should get paid enough to aford the cars they produced. The race to the bottom is destroying the marked and will not benefit anybody in the long run.
I think the point is that previously one of the differences that Nokia had was that you were buying a European product that had a European workforce, manufacturing, development and investment.
Now they’re pretty much like anyone else, outsourcing software development to the USA and hardware to China.
Exactly!
finnish people should support jolla now, yes, the hardware is asian, but the OS is finnish
Jolla has said that they investigate, if they could manufacture in Finland. I dont think it will happen for the very same reason: components come from Asia nowadays. I dont think that European consumers would be ready to pay premium for made in EU.
Good point, but so far, nobody advertised with “Made in EU”. So we dont know the outcome.
Then the question is what market Jolla is targeting. If they target the high-price “super” phone market around ~500 Euros, then I assume, people wouldnt mind to pay ~550 for it, if they know that the phone is manufactured in Finland and they are not guilty of some Chinese worker jumping of the roof.
But I dont know if +10% is enough to cover the costs. Not sure how bad the people are paid in China.
My wallet is open for Jolla.. I have been hunting for 808.. no-one sells them here in Finland so I may skip the last Original Nokia Phone as I cant buy it here.. .. So plenty of money to be spend on Jolla phones. I Have the Nokia N9 64 GB and its the best smartphone I have seen so far.. So lets jump from the burning platform ( WP 7.5 & 8.0) to rescue boat Jolla.. New Original Finnish OS, Nokia gave their soul to M$
Shame Nokia! Loving too see you suffer
Same here. I’m putting some spare cash aside I would have spent on a phone in September and if Jolla delivers anything as nice as the N9, it’s theirs.
I’ve had an N9 almost a year and been through a Lumia 800, iOS, 2 Androids (inc Jellybean on my Nexus 7) and Belle and frankly nothing comes close to the N9 for me. It’s just head and shoulders better than anything out there. If Jolla can build on that with faster hardware, then I’m in.
Every day, more skilled European labour is flushed down the drain. Race to the bottom at its finest.
RIP Nokia in Salo – end of an era. In hindsight, actually somewhat surprising they could keep manufacturing of a consumer electronic product going at such scale in Finland for this long.
Sad for the employers, hope at least some of them can be placed or find work soon. The truth is some of them want. Luckily the Finnish welfare system is still somewhat decent (comparatively).
Relatively big savings for Nokia I guess ($100m a year? more? less?), and more importantly, better alignment of their manufacturing capacities, suppliers and outsourced contractors.
I’m very sad for the employers too. Great to see they’ll be able to make phones cheaper with slave-like labor and minimal environmental regulations. You just feel bad for all the money they lost over the years. Thanks Elop for correcting this!
…just a joke.
