Nokia 808 PureView on TheVerge’s “phones I need in my life” list

| August 7, 2012 | 22 Replies

Well, not quite the whole TheVerge team, just Aaron. He’s gone and pre-ordered the Nokia 808 PureView as it is on his list of ‘phones I need in my life’. Vlad Savov wasn’t too keen on the idea – well not on the Symbian part which is integral to the phone right now.

Regardless of that, why does Aaron want the 808 so bad?

I love phones that are different. I love phones that put everything into doing one thing, and doing it well, whether it be a novel form factor, new technology, laser-etched Batman logo, or an insane 41-megapixel camera. I love it when a company spends millions to do the tech equivalent of a commenter writing “FIRST” at the end of a news article. Every company that’s made one of these “FIRST” devices (Haier excluded) has earned my respect, money, and usually, a ton of market success down the road. Without these leaps of faith, technology wouldn’t advance….

…The 808 offers a simply stunning camera, and I want very little else from it. Its PureView sensor is the first of its kind and, although Nokia claims it’s bringing the technology to Windows Phone 8, I believe we’re unlikely to ever see it in such magnificent form….

…So, while you’re ridiculing my legendary, memorable, downright ballsy inch-thick Symbian phone, I’ll be capturing your callous taunts in pixel-perfect clarity, before watching my phone crash as I attempt to share a video to Twitter.

This was about 5 days ago. Since then, unfortunately Aaron’s pre-order got cancelled by the retailer :/.

Say what you like against the Nokia 808 PureView, but this phone knows its niche and it is simply the best thing money can buy on that regard and will be unmatched for quite some time.

At least he has balls to say what Pureview can do and do better than anyone else in this whole damn world!

the 808 seems to be doing what the n8 could never be – an actual enthusiast level replacement camera, AND a casual user replacement camera.

Being the first one is usually easy, since power users often adapt but being the second, the n8 failed miserably. I mean even the lousiest of dedicated cameras out there could allow the user to zoom into the photos they took the moment before, AND dont take 3-5 seconds to render the bloody photo. The N8 could never be the camera replacements of casual users.

The 808 is what the n8 should have been during 2010. and it could be, since all the technology (processing wise, not the sensor or the technology behind it) that could solve this silly problems were available back then.

I Lol’ed at the phone crashing part :D (coming from an ex n8 user)

    Kudos to Aaron.
For me the 808 and the N9 are the two most amazing mobile devices/phones!!

“…before watching my phone crash as I attempt to share a video to Twitter.”
What does he mean with that? That the 808 crashes often?

    • Paul Grenfell says:

No.. It could be due to poor connectivity, Twitter or something else.

    • incognito says:

From personal experience, the network stack on the whole S^3 lineage is kind of effed up. While it’s done on a remarkably complex level with the ability for fine grain control like idle package scheduling for battery preservation and what not, it has way too many bugs to be considered stable.

My GF’s C7 used to get frequent and sudden reboots whenever something went wrong with the network, especially 3G when the network coverage is poor. While it was an annoyance at first, after the Anna update it became a real problem. Later on it got fixed and a bit more stable, but I think that the whole stack should be rewritten from scratch to make it solid, and that is not likely to happen.

Aaron might have hinted on those problems with suggestion that it could crash while sending a video to Twitter. Mind you, it is not as it will crash every single time, far from it, but it’s enough to happen once or twice to get the bad impression.

no. i own an 808, and i can say that it doesn’t crash.. :)

Having the phone for a while (one of the first to get it), I can honestly say it is a great camera, having put many i4s to shame after their bullying about their great camera phone. Still it is not as good to use as for eg. Lumia line of phones.
The only thing I hope that Nokia could do is to have Symbian functions on a Lumia phone including ammongst many, Pureview, and then there is no competition.
I however doubt that they can do it for whatever stupid reason.

nokia need to to bring pureview to windows phones (i own an 808)
and just like my N8 its great and i like it but i am
a Symbian fan and the 808 is just a niche market.

The company has taken too many hits, it needs too come out in
September and bloody rock the boat with its WP8 lineup.

I know we wont see 40mp pureview on windows phone , but a 20mp
pureview phone with a top screen and build , and maybe nokia
can start getting some market share back.

    • deep space bad says:

it’s gonna take a shit load more with microsoft’s bs tactics

      • Irishmarius says:

well maybe microsoft needs to man up and do what it does best, throw money at problem, throw it developers for apps , throw it at mobile companies to sell the phone and throw it at nokia to make the best phones they can.

sure it means taking a hit in the balance book, but if nokia can make phones that are up there, with the top apple/samsung ones and then undercut them on price, it will get growth and start to make a market for itself at the top again.

in the end the average consumer royalty goes as deep as the money in their pockets.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

Pureview will come to the Lumias, but as Aaron said, “, I believe we’re unlikely to ever see it in such magnificent form….”
I agree, there will only be one 41mp and thats the 808..
Lumia will most likely have a much smaller sensor.

  7. arslan says:

its really osam and pure view technology already in the process in all lumia windows phones….

  8. dss says:

all in all the 808/N9 combo is the only thing Nokia has going on for them right now.. all their other phones are kind of mundane in comparison.

    • torcida says:

yeah, best phones N9 and 808 PureView!!!

      • Paul Grenfell says:

Agree, and i personally cannot grasp the enthusiasm for Windows phones.. I keep trying them, but im always underwhelmed by their limitations.

    • Banderpop says:

Agreed. A phone that boasted all the positive features of those two would be pretty much the best device on the market bar none, apart from an app shortage. A problem that should only be temporary if Nokia demonstrated some confidence in their product instead of going with Windows and ditching their QT plans.

  10. gordonH says:

Hope to someday see a future Symbian phone with dual core processors and a good resolution screen.
I know it’s too late but it certainly would help improve the Symbian experience and impressions.
