An interview with Damian Dinning
Over at WPDang, they’ve interviewed the mighty Imaging Guru at Nokia, Damian Dinning. One of the key guys at Nokia’s imaging department that keeps Nokia well above all others when it comes to cameras.
We’ve heard pretty much everything before. Some key things:
- Obvious but Damian notes as technology advances, PureView devices would be slimmer (or words to that effect)
- Not sure if it’s an error in translation but Damian apparently says, “Nokia has a lot of experience in these two areas, patents and personnel, we will continue to adhere to the more exciting innovation in these areas.” – Patents and Personnel?
Cheers Vikas Patidar for the tip!

Jay, looks like you were in too hurry to read the question and probably just spotted the google translation of the answer?
The question was about maps and camera and I guess, that’s what Damian meant, which got lost in translation.
all the recent leaks were from this chinese site. would be cool if they would post in english too. now who knows how to translate this?
licensing patents and providing services/solutions to other companies (my guess would be map services)
I like Damian, cool guy.
Him and his team are the last thing that keep public’s interest in Nokia.
damain, would you jump ship to jolla?
Pureview is the only thing left that keeps nokia alive. Unfortubarely not everyone has good camera skill.
i love your username. it describes you very well. of course jolla has all the money to spend on hardware r&d and buy imaging patents from nokia, if they are for sale that is. of course they have the money to pay a big team of imaging specialists along with damian. of course they have the channels to bring a phone like this to eveyone. /s
if i recall right jolla is making huge efforts to finish just one device in time to present it in q4. after that it’s a struggle do deliver to carriers, gain interest in the product from the general consumer, and a struggle to find the ways to manufacture the phone in great numbers. they have a long time to go untill they can afford to have proprietary imaging tehnology and other kind of differentiation. for now they can only rely on software and it it wil stay that way for a couple of years at leat, depending on how succesful their products will be
Relax man, it seemed like a honest Qn/idea, no need to feel butt-hurt, as far as I can tell it wasn’t a personal attack on you or Nokia, just a personal observation/opinion.
I would disagree. When he said “Pureview is the only thing left that keeps nokia alive” it was pretty clear it was more malice than “honest question”
Not really, if you’re typing a very quick sentence, & you’re wanting to sum up what really stands out as the best thing/s Nokia still has going for it, that would be it.
I’m afraid you’re just being paranoid…..

It should be experiences, patents and talented people
WPDang:拍照和地图是不是诺基亚与其他厂商实现差异化竞争的关键要素?
Damian Dinning:是的,诺基亚在这两个领域都有很丰富的经验、专利和人才,我们将继续坚持在这些领域进行更多令人振奋的创新。大家也可以看到我们会整合诺基亚这些方面的优势资产,以取得更大的效益。
WPD: Are photography and maps being the essential elements for differentiating nokia from other OEMs?
DD: Yes, nokia has rich experiences, patents and talents in these 2 areas. We will keep innovating in these areas. Everyone can also expect Nokia to gain advantages from integrating these intellectual properties
Here another comparison – the 808 blows the “competition” away!!
