Nokia jab back at Moto? :p Video: Switched to Lumia from Motorola

| August 21, 2012 | 22 Replies

Perhaps it’s just perfect timing that after Motorola’s cheeky jab at Nokia with their attempt to steal some limelight on the September 5th events, but Nokia seems to have a new series called ‘Switched to Lumia’ the first one switching from a Motorola handset.

Even if it’s completely unrelated this type of video is sort of welcome. At least, I’m really liking that they’re presenting more of the strengths of Lumia rather than just showing it quickly uploading a picture to facebook.

Watch this video to find out why Chris made the switch to Lumia.

We went to meet Chris in Glasgow where he told us about why he made the switch from Motorola to Lumia.

Thinking about making the switch to Lumia? Head on over tohttp://nokia.ly/SMvNOx

  1. Jelly Bean MeeGo says:

You won’t hear people switching from the Galaxy S3 to Lumia.

    • Jay Montano says:

What, any of the current Lumia? LOLOL Why would they.

      • deep space bar says:

        exactly jay

        • twig says:

Because the build quality of the Sammie looks cheap. The screen on the Sammie is useless outside compared to the lumia and indoors it doesn’t compare to the lumia, windows apps are easier to hit while mobile, the pinning ability of the lumia vs the hunt process of the Sammie. All in all, I would say Sammie is sol. Apple court verdict coming soon.

    • Janne says:

Considering that Galaxy S3 is newer than all Lumias out there, very new, and the Lumia range is about to be revamped soon, I’d be really surprised why anyone would be expected to do such a switch. :)

From Galaxy S3 to a WP8 Lumia, not that would be more realistic…

      • dss says:

Well the Lumia range was outdated when it came out..

And I though WP is not about specs, its about user experience.. so why wouldn’t people switch from a GS3 (inferior user experience) to a lumia 900 (superior user experience) ?

        • Janne says:

And I though WP is not about specs, its about user experience.. so why wouldn’t people switch from a GS3 (inferior user experience) to a lumia 900 (superior user experience) ?

Sure, WP certainly is about those things, but that doesn’t mean the normal physics of product cycles don’t affect it. Of course they do.

Well, some might and some probably have swapped SGS3 to Lumia 900. (I certainly never touched my SGS2 again once I got my Lumias, except to upgrade it once just for kicks.) However, SGS3 is still very, very new. Anyone dumping SGS3 this soon is likely a frequently phone-swapping enthusiast who knows what they’re doing. And they also know Lumia is about to get replaced, so if they’re going to swap SGS3 to a Lumia, why not wait a month to see what’s coming out.

  2. qromodynmc says:

but you know what, this is strange,They not saying switched to Nokia, they using lumia name. Are they trying to create lumia brand? I just feeling bad.

    • Jay Montano says:

True. Asha subset is still referred as Nokia Asha.

I think they should always try to tie Nokia with Lumia however obvious it might be that Lumia is Nokia to some. Or perhaps they’re trying to use just Lumia for those who might have negative preconceived notions about Nokia name. Dunno.

      • Janne says:

Well, the Asha video series is titled “Asha & Me” (not Nokia Asha and Me). And the official Lumia logo has Nokia on top of it. I think you may be reading a bit too much into it, even though this particular video doesn’t have a Nokia logo on it.

Clearly Nokia is planning on promoting both of these brands, but both of them as sub-Nokia. Whatever works in particular situations. Mostly I guess they are trying to create something like “iPhone” or “Galaxy”. Apple doesn’t advertise the Apple iPhone. They just advertise iPhone.

        • Janne says:

I think one major reason is that Asha is often marketed to places where the Nokia brand has a good ring to it, whereas Lumia is often marketed in places where the Nokia brand lost a lot of its value after the N97.

      • Misaly says:

When you say apple iphone instead just iphone? Lumia will be a strong brand, more stronger than OVI or Nseries.

    • SLAYER says:

Notice how the first comment says ‘galaxy s3′ without ‘samsung’? it’s the same I guess. besides anyone buying a lumia will see a big nokia logo on their phone.

  3. virobloc says:

I guess it’s more about creating a branch or a line like Samsung did with the Galaxy, than getting rid of the Nokia name.

    • Janne says:

Indeed, under the new startegy Nokia has actually taken steps to raise the Nokia brand, replacing OVI with NOKIA and eventually all of NAVTEQ with NOKIA.

The one step where they have taken a reverse decision are the Asha and Lumia product-lines. In a world more and more used to phones with names I think there is some merit to the idea.

Anyway, I like both the Asha and Lumia names. Very powerful. The fact Lumia is also a Finnish female name adds a nice little ring to it too, for that little home market benefit. Asha OTOH fits its emerging markets role nicely as far as I can tell.

BTW: In 2010-2012, a total of 413 baby Lumia’s were born in Finland. Interestingly there are also 107 women and a few men named Asha in Finland, although I doubt (m)any of those are of Finnish origin.

      • viktor von d. says:

everybody it seems has a seaparate branding for their lines. samsung has the galaxy and omnia line, sony has the xperia line, htc intoduced the one line, lg has the optimus and apple just markets the iphone, not the apple iphone.
but honestly i was just thinking the other way that i don’t like nokia branidn that much. i like the lumia line, but don’t like the numbers. to many numbers. and why the hell did they start the naming convention with the 800 first. it should have been lumia 500 and for the 900, lumia 550. the low end could start at lumia 100 and the high end lumia 800-onward. now they will release high end phones with what? lumia 810,920. seems a bit off
i hopw we will get to see lumia x, or lumia n. phones with unique designs and some special features like the times of old

  4. deep space bar says:
