Preview: Nokia 808 PureView shot music video for Midnight Bonfires

| August 24, 2012 | 10 Replies

A couple of weeks ago we saw a Nokia 808 PureView bag full of swag that was to be used by the band, ‘Midnight Bonfires’ for a music video.

Two days ago, Sam from Midnight Bonfires shared the results. I love the song, but the video isn’t the best I’ve seen from the 808. Perhaps some post processing artefacts? I think it needs assistance from a handicam – at least all music videos do when you try and do some panning. That or a dolly/mounted tripod.

They’re currently in the middle of editing, so I’m hoping there’ll be some more cuts to ease the jitteriness of the 808. I think the colours look great, particularly in the woods. It doesn’t look like a phone video at all (apart from the need for stabilisation).

Cheers Sam for the tip!

BTW, here’s a music video from N8.

  1. Yeah there are a few post processing artefacts and a bit of jitteriness in this edit (was done relatively quickly) but hopefully when the final version is edited it should be better :) . The 808 showed some brilliant colours in the outside shots and actually didn’t perform too badly indoors in the dark. I’ll let you know when its done! :)

There was a pigeon sitting outside of my window, just chilling, enjoying life… listening to this “music” made me go outside and punch it in the face, 10 times!

To me the video looks juddery, like a result of poor framerate conversion. Which is easier to fix than shaky footage at least. I’ve yet to find a post-processing fix for shaky video that produces better results than just leaving it alone.

May I ask a question of anyone with SymDVR installed? If you use SymDVR to record a video while holding your phone in portrait, do you find as I do that your video is substantially more stable than it normally would be? Or am I imagining this?

  4. I forgot to mention that the video is meant to mostly be filmed in a ‘first person’ kind of role. I think it should become slightly more apparent when the full video is released.

I find that the ‘Steadicam Smoothie’ works really well to stabilize video from my camera phone(I’ve an N8 – getting an 808 when price drops below $550). Highly recommended.
