Elop on a Nokia Tablet: “The Opportunity is Very Clear”

| September 5, 2012 | 29 Replies

Well the Nokia Event has ended,  yet we didn’t see a single hint of a Nokia tablet (not that we were really expecting one). Yet a lot of people are still wondering, when will we see a Nokia tablet? if it all? ABC news met up with Stephen Elop and asked him that exact question, his repsonse was cryptic as usual, yet it’s definitely pointing at a tablet in Nokia’s near future, maybe in time for MWC13” (Or even CES?)

“We have not announced any tablets, but I think the opportunity is very clear,” Nokia CEO Stephen Elop told ABC News. “People today increasingly are looking for a common digital experience between their smartphone and tablet, with a PC, and with their gaming platform, and so there’s clearly an opportunity across there. This is something that we’re looking at very closely.”

It would seem Elop plans on capitalizing on the joint ecosystem between WP8 and Windows 8, as Ballmer said today “it’s the Year of Windows”. But of course a Joint ecosystem means that these WP8 devices have to move first.

It has been clear for over 2 years…still nothing.

my friend had a touch screen Nokia in 1998 and I have seen a tablet already in 2009 with Meego, but the point here is that Nokia will not launch a tablet competing with Kindle. That was part of the deal. FTS.

I believe you’re thinking of maemo/710/770/800, & they weren’t tablets in the modern sense in many ways, still quite unique at the time though, but it didn’t take much longer for the 1st wave of tablets that really kicked things off, Nokia missed the boat.

It doesn’t serve Microsoft’s interests for Nokia to launch a tablet right now…. So Stephen Elop is delaying Nokia’s efforts in producing and launching a tablet right now… 1st, let Microsoft’s own branded windows 8 tablets sell, get known and established in the market… And then when all the market is split and divided by M$, Apple and uncle Sammysung in the tablets market… Elop will finally let Nokia announce a tablet in 2013 and launch it in 2014… So Nokia can keep trailling it’s competitors like it has the last few years…
      HA HA… Just kidding… Or am I??!! :p hahaha

      Cheers!!

No, that’s not it. MS would actually be happy if Nokia released a tablet that’s better than the surface. The thing is, their offering might not be as good, hence why nothing has been announced. When Nokia releases a Windows 8 tablet, it should be better than the Surface.

        • lmiked says:

When that happens (Nokia having a Windows 8 better than surface ready), the next generation of mobile products will be out (hologram tablets maybe), or there will be no market for Nokia to sell tablets to, all people will have already decided to go with other choices available, be it windows tablets or not.

          • migo says:

No, things won’t move that quickly. Nokia has about a year to come up with something. They’ll have to see what they can do to really make a difference.

With Surface MS talked about getting rid of parallax, which is great for getting actually useful pen input, but the input delay is pretty bad still (unless MS decided to neglect mentioning that in their reveal). That’s something Nokia could potentially work on along with PureMotion.

There’s also a pretty clear indication that something like the Asus Transformer is very much desired for Windows 8. That makes things a bit shaky for Nokia, as their strengths seem to be in making more of a slate. It’s unlikely they could one-up Asus, and given the reputation they’ve been able to build, it’s unlikely many people would go for an untested Nokia tablet over an Asus (likely the same reason Asus is staying out of making phones).

Now depending on how well their flexible screen technology is moving along, a tablet that can be rolled up would be pretty amazing, and would also be worth it for them to enter the market with.

            • lmiked says:

Yeah, that can and is probably all true, but, by the time they have a tablet ready, there’ll no market left for them…
they should’ve donw one, even if simple, Kinda like the few 1st Lumias, Ok, good looking but not SUPER phones, let people know they’re in the tablet market, and make them aware, and then, launch a new tablet that would kick ass, so people that already owned one, would be thinking, well the 1st is ok, this one looks amazing, let me tell all my budies about it.

            • lmiked says:

Plus, when Nokia comes up with something that is better than the current tablets… The competition will be announcing their new tablets, that will probably be better and innovative, and Nokia will be exactly where you said they would be now if they launched, but one year later… They need to do something now!!! PRONTO!!!

      • gordonH says:

Nokia doesn’t compete with Ms products… simple right. All good and competing Nokia technology gets to “live on” in the MS product.

HA HA … kidding here too.. or am I?

      • arts says:

another thing, launching a tablet now, with so many competitors might just be suicide, especially if you dont really have something to make you stand apart from the rest.

        • lmiked says:

          Really?
“with all the competitors would be suicide”?

well, what are they expecting? The competitors to go away? No!!! Competition is only going to get better, they own the tablet market right now, and have an active user base providing them with feedback and requests, letting them know what they want, and unlike Nokia the other brands actually listen to their customers say and try to give them what they ask for… Most of the android tablets out there are crappy, even the better ones aren’t considered that good, but they’re dirt cheap, and have a solid ecosystem, good apps, good games… And they’re actively testing the market… With is Nokia doing? Looks like it is just sitting waiting dor something to happen…
Plus, with PureView and PureMotion HD+ techs, they could even launch tablets with Imaging/video oriented purposes (and Maps), like tablets for photographers, and camera mans, with amazing image editing software on extremely portable and light materials… You know, at least do something before the market goes to hell (Apple and uncle Sammy).

    • migo says:

This is Nokia we’re talking about. They’re slow.

      • jiipee says:

Are you saying that Elop is failing?

        • lmiked says:

Huh… Yeah! Kinda!! Hasn’t everyone been criticizing him like forever…? And hiring Hitmans to try to put him down :p??? Hahaha
Nah, just kidding, you know, Stephen Elop, is kind of like that annoying stubborn girlfriend… Now matter how pissed off she makes you, she’s gonna get what she wants from you (shove WP down our throats), she’s gonna piss you off constantly and deny you what you want

          • lmiked says:

and break your spirit… And in the end, she’s gonna give you what you want… But well, you won’t be able to enjoy it cause of everything that’s happened before hahaha.
Way to go Elop, you sexy sexy dominatrix GIRL (she sure can handle her boyfriend Nokia)!!! :p hahaha

ALI YOU ARE REALLY GREAT , I RESPECT YOU NOW

  3. jiipee says:

I had a posting in Tips, where a (former) Nokia director has anonymously told Finnish magazine that Nokia is developing Wtablet in California.

They’ve already have had prototypes using Symbian, Meego and Meltemi.

    A 8inch Coffee Tab please.

    • migo says:

If it has zero bezel, sure. Otherwise, I wouldn’t want anything bigger than 7″. There’s a reason the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, PlayBook, Nook Color and such went with 7″.

  5. gordonH says:

The new CEO fancy term/excuse for going WP only:
“A common digital experience between their smartphone and tablet, with a PC, and with their gaming platform”

    • lmiked says:

What tablet is the Nokia CEO talking about (not a Nokia’s that’s for sure, probably M$ surface which I actually liked)? And what gaming system (XBOX360 obviously)? What about people that have a PS3 or a Wii? Would they have to buy a XBOX360 to fit into that common experience (ecosystem)? Hum.. Gee, that would be very convenient for M$ ;) huh? Not for Nokia though.

      cheers.
