Weekend Watch: Nokia World 2012 keynote – Nokia Lumia 920/820 launch

| September 8, 2012 | 24 Replies

In case you missed it or just want to watch it again, here’s the 2 hour keynote from 05.09.12.

It wasn’t the best keynote ever, as evident by my post about my annoyances with it.

mynokiablog.com/2012/09/06/some-annoyances-from-yesterdays-keynote-will-revisit-when-i-have-more-time/

However, taking another quick glance at it, they have made some small improvements.  I’ve already started putting together an article that revisits that post linked above but tries to be more proactive with my criticism/suggestions as it seems we cant leave anything out to chance. Hopefully I’ll have time to get that out by Monday.

I really hope Nokia just go out there with Marko Ahtisaari as the presenter. It seems like he’s the guy with the chops to present, especially after how he presented the N9.

And the marketing…oh the marketing. Gah.

    • dansus says:

After 5mins of Kevin i was ready to jump off a bridge. Why do they get boring executives to present these things, surely someone in marketing is available?!

      • viktor von d. says:

that kevin dude is a traiwreck. he is very nevrotic in his presentations. hated him last year at nw,hated him at the wp8 unveilling in the summer and hated him now.

  2. Svedu says:

When are the rest of the events? Nokia said that his year there will be several smaller Nokia World events. I cant find any info on when the rest are planned to be taking place. Does anyone here know?

    • Yialun says:

You’re right, there’s still hope that another event will blow our minds, but PLEASE without Jo f*cking Harlow this time, this person CAN’T talk to the public

      WE WANT MARKO

      • Svedu says:

But when are they? Wasnt it clearly stated that they indeed would split them up in many smaller events this year, and that the first one (5-6th september) was only aimed for operators/partners?

        • Janne says:

No info. On 5-6th there probably was some invite only event, at least there was an invite VIP event on the 6th in the Nokia Flagship Store prior to the public opening on the 7th.

But beyond that, who knows. I guess we have heard of a blogger event in late September? If I remember right. Other than that no idea… I think the reality is there really isn’t a Nokia World as such this year.

          • Svedu says:

Thanks. So obviously what they mean by splitting the event to smaller events is actually just to split the event to smaller events. Meaning 1 small event/year..

      • napier says:

Maybe Marko can’t bring himself to market this shit.

  3. Janne says:

I’d rather just pretend this painful launch week never happened. :) No way am I watching *that* again.

On Monday I will just blisfully wonder where did these great new Nokia phones appear without any launch events.

Call it trauma management. Post-Nokia PR traumatic stress syndrome. We should start a therapy group.

  4. Mario says:

I followed public speaking classes in school, so if I find enough stomach to do so, I will try to dissect the speeches and all the mistakes made and post them here (and there were plenty). Wish me luck.

  5. Nokia I LOVE NOKIA mwuah mwuah hugs says:

I wish Nokia had done this a day or two after the i-Something announcement with Marko and Damian presenting the devices.

  6. Omar BHR says:

00:35:17 LG Sued by Samsung LOL

  7. Sefriol says:

Elop’s starting speech was fine. Nothing special, but great way to tell people how we are at this point.
While Harlow had right things in her speech… well she was boring and there should be more live demonstrations to the crowd so they can see how the technology works in direct situation. That makes people think that you trust your product and are not afraid to use it.
But wireless charging is really a future. Think about going to a cafeteria without a need for a charger and recharge your phone because you know that there is wireless charger.
Joe Belfiore in the other hand was okey, but things he said were old and presentation was out of place. They should have focused on the phone, not the software since it isn’t ready/not much to tell about.
And Shields… really he doesn’t feel really interesting and sounds like he’s having cold. And he’s chooses his words poorly. “This is the most difficult demo in my life!” eh, a feature which is suppose to make your life easier is really hard? COME ON. Plus testing the accessories was really awkward. He should have trained that like million times to make it work flawlessly. Even I can connect my N9 to my car in 5 seconds without a problem. And that’s via bluetooth. Well atleast his presentation had right things in it.
That malfunction was unfortunate, but they could have used the same camera man they had for the accessories in close range. Not Shields fault though, the staff should have been there immediately. Things which should have been prepared. Seems that Shields freaked out after that and couldn’t keep his speech going fluently. Steve, come rescue me..
And why did they have Shields and Harlow talking about same things? Remove one of them (or both TROLOLOL) and add more stuff to talk about, more stuff to demonstrate.
Elop did fine, Belfiore was okey but didn’t have much to tell and Shields and Harlow should be changed to people who can talk to the crowd.
But in the end it seems like that WP8 should have been ready for summer. This is something to think about. Maybe it was planned that Belfiore talks more than he did, but WP8 wasn’t ready.

  8. kan says:

Harlow is so bad its like a nightmare now everytime she speaks. You could condense all her waffle and rhetoric into a simple message.

Show two pictures of the same scene – one blurry and dark, the other sharp and bright.

Then say “how do you go from this” (point towards blurry pic) “to this” (point to the sharper pic) “well it’s obvious, it’s with this” (unveil the lumia pureview”

You then talk about the journey – of how you got to Pureview and what makes it so good and what makes it a generational advancement in camera technology.

  9. Yialun says:

    Look at this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LffDQHp5E0

Makes me wanna cry.. So beautiful, Marko sounds so perfectly.

WTF NOKIA WITH JO FCKNG ASLEEP HARLOW AND THE OTHER RAT-FACE WEIRDO RESIZING TILES ???

What the f*cking f******ck !!!! Let’s listen to Limp Bizkit “Break stuff” right f*cking now

We have to create an online petition for Nokia to never ever show up Jo and rat-face on stage again, and instead of these, to bring Marko and Damien together, for some expert magic.

  10. kan says:

Marko repeats the same things over and over again. Harlow and Shields should never be infront of the camera. If they dont sound or look positive then thats translates itself to the message.

  11. Jesseri says:

Elop was, as always, hitting that “war of ecosystem” bullshit speech. I’m hoping next year Nokia has a new competent CEO. Hope Jo Harlow is gone too. Annoying b*tch if i may say so. Best part of the presentation was that L920 animation. L920 seems to be quite good device, but somewhat disapointing. Nokia cut too many corners when designing the 920. Hope there will be Lumia 1000 early next year.
