Weekend Watch: Rich Recording with Coldplay and Nokia 808 PureView

| September 9, 2012 | 22 Replies

Here’s another great example of Rich Recording and PureView (phase 1) as filmed on the Nokia 808 PureView.

Listen to the sound recording – all from a phone. And also check out the clarity of the video, especially given that it’s zoomed in.

In situations like a concert, you’re not gonna want to be carrying a lot of things with you. The less things the better. So it’s great to have your phone and camera in the same package.

You might be a fan of Coldplay, you might not. Either way, you can’t deny Stereo Rich Recording.

NOTE: Now frankly, I don’t care if you’re tired of me sharing 808 PureView videos :p. I’m not and there are certainly many Nokia fans out there who would find them interesting so please utilise your ability to not click things.

We need to showcase PureView and Rich Recording as much as possible as these are breakthrough products in Nokias that aren’t getting the attention from Nokia that they deserve.

For your troubles, let me show you a meerkat.

I can’t believe how good Rich Recording is.As you say Jay , Nokia do themselves a disservice by not promoting the things they not only do good but great.I was umming and ahhing which will be my next phone 808 or 920.With only mono Rich Recording on the 920 the tide is turning towards the 808.

    • Chris says:

Hey… looks like I’m not the only one… I thought the L920 would be a better package on a day-to-day basis, as well as a better video capture device due to OIS, but noooo it has mono mic.

I guess the next time Nokia came out with a new phone, I’ll ask: “So… what’s the catch?”

      • drexter says:

but no one has ever heard the rich recording of lumia 920 as of today… who knows, it might be on par with 808 pureview rich recording

        • StefanP says:

Is rich recording on the L920 confirmed? As I read, there are 3 mics, but is there SW support for rich recording? Specs they mono, afaik.

          • drexter says:

i observed that there is no microphone near the LED flash of L920.. coz at 1st gen lumias i see a small dot beside the led flash but not today. but i saw micro holes at the top of lumia 920

  2. Matt says:

Mostly good light levels and excellent sound, but this is a good example of why PureView Phase 2 is needed on top of Phase 1.

  3. Jules says:

Give me Nokia 808 PureView and ill showcase PureView and Rich Recording as much as possible …. :D :D

  4. Paul Grenfell says:

Jay, try experimenting with 2mp, Its surprising just how good it can be at that setting..

  5. Tak says:

My wife was also in concert, but she didn’t know about rich recording(my mistake), so she concentrated on taking pictures. But she took a small snap shot video from middle of one song, and when she came home, I put headphones for her and she got massive eargasm and she greatly regretted(many days), that she didn’t document the whole show. Even when I knew about rich recording, I was stunned about the audio quality. I’m a record collector and I have lots of official and unofficial live albums, that have worse audio quality, than what 808 records!

    • Jari says:

Yes very impressing indeed. N9 did well too, check OH1Jari on Youtube, I have some JMJ vid´s there. Video quality is far behind the 808 but audio was Ok on N9. Waiting for Jean Michel Jarre to return back to Finland, I have my 808 ready :-)

Here is a video I took a couple weeks ago at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN. This is also a great example of rich recording. Crank it up!!

  7. Dave says:

  8. ms.nokia says:

wow, never new rich recording was that good, or maybe i just love coldplay too much, i hope the stereo rich recording comes to the 920,

  9. André Leme says:

I’ve made a video showcasing 808 vs n8 sound recording capabilities, quite interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usFL_sokzqg

  10. dss says:

What impresses me the most is how it handles loud sounds, such as a night club.. I don’t think there is any other device (so compact) that can do so well in such conditions.

Here is one from a club in San Fran.. the lows were very strong, no problem at all, no distortion..just clean sound.

and to fully appreciate it, you have to listen to a recording from another device, likely and iphone ..

  11. Alcom says:

Oh my god. you’re that guy that everyone hates at a concert because you hold your phone up and record the whole thing. -.-
