Nokia Lumia 920 possibly coming sooner than end of the year…October 21st any good?

| September 19, 2012 | 54 Replies

WPCentral are marking this rumour as a STRONG possibility. At least for AT&T.

This date has appeared before but it wasn’t that trusted. However, WPCentral say they’ve come across new information which says the launch date as the 21st October for AT&T.

The source and its contents cannot be shared but WPCentral insists on accuracy of this information. The level of trust is based on the previous source apparently being correct on WP Mango update dates.

The source material is said to be in a quite senior level at AT&T

Well that’s good news. hope it’s true.

Have been seeing a barrage of iphone 5 reviews today. Nokia should really step it up and announce important dates or at least have a review unit for tech blogs.

    • Mark says:

Agree. Although most of the early iPhone 5 reviews are from Apple’s partisans (who coincidentally get the early review units), they’re all resoundingly positive. Nokia need to get the Lumia out.

    • Just Visiting says:

@lordstar…Not sure why you think that Nokia should give review units to blogs – WP8 not finished yet. Or would you rather Nokia give out units of the Lumia 920/820 running WP Tango?

      • lordstar says:

Well there is still a way to let tech blogs have a preview of the phone by allowing some apps to be operational. Just the key features like city lens, maps, camera, and other nokia exclusive services. The fact that the Iphone 5 is getting a lot of good reviews and will be shipping in a few weeks is not a good thing for Nokia.

  2. qromodynmc says:

I hope its true.. People loved 920,even in my country I can see a lot of 920 fan,but you know, people just cant wait too much long..

    • Ruben says:

why can’t they wait much long? Are they in a desperate need to buy a phone? are they gonna die hungry if the phones don’t get there by October? Is their money gonna disappear?

It looks like “if the lumia isn’t coming, i’m gonna spend my money on another thing. Why? Because i have to spend it on something, right now. Can’t wait, can’t be stopped, i need to spend!”

      People are just strange…

    • Mark says:

Actually, he’s right. Bluntly, if Nokia don’t have the Lumia 920 out in a significant number of developed markets by the start of November then they’ve failed.

      Why?

Well, firstly, the 920 isn’t going to attract the Apple faithful or those who are happy with their iPhones. They’ll all get the iPhone 5, that’s obvious. No, the 920 is aiming for the big screen, fast processor, loads of bling, ‘don’t want an iPhone’ market, sacrificing lightness for features and its obvious competitor is the SGS III.

Samsung will start to seed rumours of their own WP handsets as well as the SGSIV very soon and Nokia need to get in ahead of the curve. I think that launching now is pointless as the iPhone 5 will be grabbing everyone’s attention, but in a month when the hype’s worn off they need to be able to step up to the plate as the next new thing. Any later than that and it becomes increasingly difficult to generate interest.

  3. Donie says:

I just read that there is a Windows Phone 8 presentation in New York on October 25th. A Win8 launch event will be on October 29th.
I think that WP8 will be shown on this events, too, and I don’t believe that the phones will be available before this event, but shortly after that.
Let’s see what will happen. Hopefully the 920 will be available on November 2nd, as the telekom-presse.at website is expecting.

    Source (sorry, german): http://www.telekom-presse.at/Windows_Phone_8_Launch_am_29-_Oktober_und_Verkaufsstart_zumindest_fuer_Nokia_am_2-_November_.id.22214.htm

  4. stylinred says:

My fathers wanting a new phone and he’d like his first smartphone and I was hoping to get him the 920 but if it won’t arrive until the holidays then I guess that’s that :/

  5. @johnny_lab82 says:

I confirm. For the latest rumours I`v heard Nokia will launch Nokia Lumia 920 on AT&T at oct 21. Possibly

  6. esbo says:

Maybe the strategy is this: announce new Lumias before iPhone -> people will talk about them before iPhone announcement -> wait that iPhone is launched and the talk about it settled down -> announce Lumia launching date and people will talk again about Lumias.

IMO there is two important things that Nokia has to do for this holiday season, 1) Launch the new Lumias in the most important regions, 2) Get the Asha 311&306 to Europe and Russia so that parents can get a cheap phone with Angry birds, EA games and touch screen for their children (Lumia 610 is also important).

    • Antero says:

I thought the 306 and 311 were already available in Europe. At least in Finland you can walk in to a store and buy both right now:

      http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product/1450/dhkcr/Nokia-Asha-311-matkapuhelin-harmaa#

      http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product/3436/dhkcx/Nokia-Asha-306-matkapuhelin-harmaa

Regarding the news itself: I doubt they will actually give units to customers on 21st but maybe they will open preorders and start shipping Nov 2nd?

    • nn says:

I don’t get the fixation on iPhone. The people who will buy iPhone, especially in the first weeks, simply aren’t interested in alternatives and you can’t even begin to sway them unless you have truly disruptive product.

Lumia 920 isn’t in talk, and frankly, how it could? There is no word about the SW, no prices, no dates, there are no devices available even for testers so there are no comparisons with other phones, no reviews. There is literally nothing to talk about. I still can believe somebody could thought this will work, that they will show the phone for few short moments and then the world will be amazed by it for next two months.

IMHO this is the most botched launch ever and if this is the result of two years of preparations and start of the new Nokia, I don’t want to think what horrors await us.

      • Harangue says:

No, the N8 was probably the most botched launch ever. Announcement in April, a lot previews during the months after that. Promises of release in September only to see the first devices come to market in October. Even then it wasn’t perfect and more promises were made to fix them yet those fixes came another 6 months after the proposed date they would come.

iPhone fixation is perfectly sensible, not because of customers but because of news outlets. With the iPhone now becoming available most news will be dominated by reviews of it. Let that die down and come in again with new news and your back in the minds of people again.

Eventhough the 920 isn’t a talked about as an iPhone it has been appearing in a lot of comparisons and being mentioned. That’s pretty impressive for a device that has no availability date, no word of the SW it will be running and not even a single mention of price or estimated price.

        • D Harries says:

I think stock market price is like sheep. Not such an authority on the true worth of any thing. Facebook shares over priced. Facebook/iPhone, same breed of thinking. Nokia certainly has it’s work cut out & it will take time. I love my 808, but I might have wanted a 920…

When the phones have been on the market for some time, people will say beautiful Nokia, sculpted screen, great to use, a work of art. People will make their informed choices retrospectively.

        • nn says:

I would understand if they waited for the iPhone madness to pass and make real launch at the start of October. I would understand if they made full launch to attack iPhone head on. But what we got was essentially just a list of HW specs and then they went into silence even in the face of clear need to get the phones out at least to professional reviewers to counter the fake story.

The problem is that these comparisons are just in the tech press, where they would do it regardless of when would Nokia make the launch. And even there it is essentially just about the HW specs, because there is nothing else to talk about. Which is precisely what Nokia don’t want to, the HW is same as in the competitor’s phones at best, and often worse. Instead the supposed pros of Lumia are in the usability – things like better SW, better touch, better camera. To properly asses these one has to use the actual phone, which the reviews can’t. So for unknowing buyer there is no clear reason why he should be interested in Lumia.

As far as I remember, the N8 launch itself was good, they showed the full phone, and the phones were available for previews and some tests.

          • Viipottaja says:

No, wrong again, they are not. I have read several main stream news paper articles on the iPhone5 (and otherwise) that referenced Nokia 920. And, on top of that, they often mention the camera, screen, wireless charging and design.

The timing of the 920 was right. Had they announced later, a big chunk of that publicity would not be there.

            • nn says:

Yeah, occasionally they got reference in passing, buried inside the story about iPhone. If this result from their most important launch of their most important device is considered success, then you know they are in deep trouble.

The timing might be right for head on attack on iPhone, IF they would do proper, full launch. But they didn’t, they instead misfired the possible buzz, and it all went to nowhere. Now that they even wont get the boost from WP8 launch, because MS will use HTC phones…

              • Viipottaja says:

Nonsense, the mentions are not in passing, they are with reference to specific specs and noting Nokia as a real and interesting alternative for consumers.

The timing was perfect. Would it have been even better with all the info on pricing, availability, functioning OS etc? OF COURSE. But it is still way better they announced it now rather than waited for all that to be ready and then having missed the opportunity to have been introduced to MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of people who were reading about the iPhone but now also learned about the 920.

                Sorry, you are wrong again.

                • nn says:

I can assure you that 99,9 % of people that read the article and weren’t interested in Lumia before immediately forgotten 920 was even mentioned. And that is the better alternative, because if you scroll down to the table, the listed specs and the opinion presented actually discourage from buying 920.

This is not how you market your product to large audience. If Elop is greatfull for these PR achievements, then again, they have to be absolutely desperate.

                  • Viipottaja says:

Sorry, you are suffering from a selection bias. You picked the article to link that quoted a rare negative evaluation of the 920.

You have amazing powers as you can assure what 99.9% of people that read an article do and do not remember. Give it a rest already.

Have more beer and some deep fried cheese to chill you a little.

                    • nn says:

Obviously the BBC article was just an example, because I really don’t see the large pool of reporting about iPhone in major news outlets where they give big presence to Nokia phones. Here you have reporting from NYT, another major news outlet and it doesn’t look any better. Especially in the latest fuss about Apple ditching Google maps, the great where company is entirely missing from the reports…

      • Viipottaja says:

Wrong. Just today I spoke to several people here in Turkey that had seen the 920 launch and were seriously considering buying it. Including current Android top end phone and iPhone users.

Nokia is in the talk more than it has in a good long while.

        • nn says:

I don’t doubt the people you are meeting know about 920 and want to buy it even at this point when they don’t know the price, the date or the SW. I hope you realize that there is selection bias and that they are not representative of the general populace. I would bet Nokia wouldn’t lose these people if they didn’t do the non-launch in September but rather proper full launch in October.

          • Viipottaja says:

What selection bias? The selection bias that made them buy Androids and iPhones? :D :D :D :D :D

And, they too directly compared the disappointment of the iPhone5 to the excitement they felt about the 920.

            The launch timing was right.

            • nn says:

That selection bias that results from the fact that people you meet are most probably a lot like you and are influenced by your knowledge and opinions.

If you really think normal people watched Lumia launch and are seriously considering switch to 920 based on that, you are just living in your own reality.

              • Viipottaja says:

Sorry, once more you are wrong. These were people I don’t normally deal with at all and had never met before. They happened to see my L900 and started asking about it, and then talked about how they are considering a swithc and how disappointing the iPhone5 was for them.

Most people obviously – can’t believe I even have to say something this obvious – did not watch the Lumia launch OR even the iPhone5 launch. They read or heard about it later, and most of them in mainstream media.

You living in your own odd reality does not mean I do.

                • nn says:

It doesn’t matter how often you deal with them, it still isn’t proper representation of general populace. Not to mention that you didn’t say how much people you met that didn’t want to buy 920 and didn’t ask about it. I could talk about people I met and it would be equally irrelevant. Normal people weren’t interested in the launch and if they have seen news from the launch day, they already forgotten it. And that’s why Nokia will need to waste tens/hundredths of millions on proper marketing of new Lumias.

                  • Viipottaja says:

Lol. F U already. These were normal, random people. I never claimed they are a statistically representative sample did I? You are the one who came up with some incredible BS about “selection bias” and when I showed you there was none, you come up wit some more BS.

The timing of the announcement was right. Face the fact.

                    • nn says:

Glad you finally acknowledged your anecdotal evidence isn’t representative of anything. So my points from the first comment stand.

  7. zymo says:

In a trusted German online shop it’s said the Lumia 920 is going to be available from 15th November.

  8. peter says:

    october?? Too late…

  9. meh says:

Nokia world collaboration day is next week, September 25. One rumor is that Nokia will announce price and date there.

  10. ms.nokia says:

sounds possible, nokia will releases Q3 results on 18th october, maybe thats why they are waiting before announcing the 820/920 availability.

  11. JGrove303 says:

I wpuldn’t at all be surprised if Samsung pushed out their WP8 flashed Galaxy SIIIs with no polish just to beat Noki to ghe punch.

  12. apamau says:

They have to really price is nicely, and to price it nicely.. what u think the price should be ?

  13. Bob says:

Have only had my 900 a couple of months . . . but trying to resist this beauty . .. must resist.

On a side note – have people read the Engadget iPhone review. Has certainly ruffled many feathers sinking to a new low in bias (no Cons!). Most of the comments hold up the 920 as an example that surpasses the supposedly ‘perfect’ speced iPhone.

  14. Jammy says:

October 21st date sounds little impossible to me, because WP8 RTM was released to manufacturers just this week, and now they have to work with carriers for testing and they also have to work out little chinks in compatibility with Hardware, and this all is not possible in one month. Maybe on 21st October they will announce the preorders date, which might be in frst week of November, with possible shipment in second week of November.

  15. D Harries says:

If the hardware is ready, they could release some handsets on Beta with software updates to come. This satisfies the enthusiasts who want their phone now, but with a clear understanding of what the phone is. Everyone else who wants the perfect market ready device can wait for the official delivery to market date

    • Just Visiting says:

@D Harries…I think your suggestion is ridiculous; besides, Nokia already did that with their previous devices (i.e. N8).

Nokia must strive for perfection, which means releasing the best possible device, with virtually no bugs or performance issues; if that means that they must release the new Lumias in November, then so be it.

      • jcar302 says:

Agreed, putting out a lemon at this stage of the game would be catastrophic.

Enthusiasts only make up a very small percentage of users, why risk your rep to appease a few jackass’ that just can’t wait?

        • D Harries says:

I would love to be the first to own a beta phone, as a special customer/Nokia fan, as long as the hardware was finished. Would also agree to take part in feedback/phone monitoring program. I agree that it would only be suitable for certain customers

  16. Just Visiting says:

Sometimes, when I read comments on this site, I really think that there are many people who have a distorted perception of Nokia’s presence and influence with regards to tech sites…people who continue to decry ‘Nokia should have released the Lumia 820/920 before the iPhone’ or ‘Nokia should release the Lumia’s NOW’ – I admonish you to visit CNET.com so that you can see what you will be greeted with!

Smart move for Nokia (or any other oem whether WP or Android)to NOT release their devices immediately before, or after, the iPhone 5.

  17. robin says:

bullshit . Nokia would like to have her product ready to compete with iphone , for the first time in five years can compete , you think they would not have the product ready ? bullshit man . this is another great failure of Elop , if you are going to present something , is because it is ready for release . Theres no mention of the software, gives me the impression that it is the same wp7 with better processor and better hardware. it’s funny that in the presentation of WP8 not talked about it , talked about the hardware, the only things that Nokia did well for years , I am not surprised of this quality of hardware , because nokia distinguished always to make good hardware. my question is where is the benefit of the alliance with Microsoft ?

  18. exsanguine says:

Nokia presents Lumia early so it becomes a buzz in your ear.

new iSame comes out and people realize it is , well, dull.

Nokia comes out with new press release with the vendors and announces release dates and pricing

    iWho?

I still say it will be Nov 2nd.

  19. Azeem says:

Another month to wait! :( *sigh*
