Video: Lumia 920 vs. iPhone 5 (Actual Footage)

I think it’s fair to say that the Engadget people are having a blast in Espoo, playing with all of Nokia’s latest toys; here’s a video sample of the iphone 5 pitted up against the Lumia 920:
Honestly the quality on both videos suck so I’m assuming that they were compressed, if we’re only looking at stabilization then the 920 is amazing as expected (except towards the end it seemed to Jump/frames rather than shake?)- but once again it’s a prototype device.
Category: Lumia, Nokia, Windows Phone

The difference is not catastrophic but it is noticeable… and one more question… Am i the only one that things he is going to break out any minute and rock out?
Thinks*

LOOOOL thats too funny
one interesting point. the camera of Lumia 920 is further away from the center where she holds, which might have caused more vibration or jumps.
Also, the phones appear to lay loosly in the ‘cradle type thing’ whoch causes a little extra motion, fine motion specifically which wouldn’t happen when holding it in hand.
lol wut?
Engadget got two new videos out vs the ONE X and SGS3, it’s amazing how much better the 920 is compared to both. It simply trashes them completely..
ip5 is close but still can see nothing but tail lights, expect it to join One X and SGS3 (as soon L920 is final, no prototypes) in a video comparison site near you.
I guess Apple were right to call 6th generation iphone 5,in reality its a 4s in track suits.
Hmmm. You can see the difference, sure, and it’s not a surprise since OIS itself is a proven concept.
But it’s not magic unicorn sauce. You do need to _try_ to hold the device still, and then OIS will forgive you a lot of tiny jitters in your hand.
But running while holding it out in front of you? The lense can not exactly float outside of the enclosure, what do they expect?
The Russian radio controlled car was a better example, since there there are lots of tiny vibrations which were very well absorbed. If they had driven through a gravel road with potholes, yeah it would still be shaky.
On another note, i5 did not impress.
Presicely!!!
OIS is for a normal ussage scenario. The video will probably come out rock steady when you’re holding it normally, and not trying to wring the bejesus out of the technology.
I dont think he switched OIS on or is it something always on. Both videos look crap to me unless they do a retest again.
OIS turns on automatically with video, but this is still a prototype.
There’s still shake, yes, but it’s not quite as jarring.
Yes, true. Less jarring, but both do look crappy.
The ONLY way it would ever be super smooth with running is with an actual steadicam.
The difference is night and day, even with a poorly set up “cheap/£100″ steadicam.
Running/jumping/walking looks totally different.

The interview with Elop went so bad with tons of lame questions…
The shaking is just as bad in both videos.
I don’t think cellphones can mitigate shaking unless they use big sensors and special tech like point and shoot, or unless they get really powerful hardware to do the mitigation in software mode.
I am not impressed by either phones regarding the camera.
Not an amazing difference in stabilisation but quality at least looked much better on Lumia 920. Can’t wait to see someone like Steve Litchfield put the 920 through it’s paces.
Looks like they did go to Tampere to make that video.
pure bullshit
ois obviously helps a great deal
with regard to the PQ keep in mind this isn’t a PQ test its a Stabilisation test
so the videos are likely compressed and the settings may not have been optimal for max pq
either way im glad i got my 808
guys please remember how smooth was the fake video for 920, the one with the girl on a bike recorded with a lumia 920 van:) and now u can judge for ur self how good is that big ois pureview tech!
and DD said on tw that lumia 920 can video records only with presetted zoom. so during recording there is no way to change zoom, if i understanded well
920 is clearly better, OIS is clearly superior to its digital counterpart, but it won’t do miracles.
To me the 920 looks a LOT better.
Oh my goodness, they updated the story with Galaxy SIII and HTC One X. The 920 ABSOLUTELY DESTROYS them. And the HTC One X had its digital image stabilization turned on, no less! Very very impressive.

Wow, who would have thought; the Iphone actually has the better camera of the 3 opponents. LMFAO.
One X looks terrible, GS3 isn’t much better either. But the One X, man what happened there? If the 8X and 8S do similarly ‘well’ there is no contest on that front.
Just amazing!
Nokia, shut up and take my money!
People who don’t see a difference don’t know what they’re looking at! OIS clearly takes care of the higher frequency jitters which are clearly present in the iPhone5 video, and has smoothing ‘long wavelength’ movement than the iPhone5 as well. It was never said OIS would remove all instability, it’s purpose is to make the overall video smoother, which it does by a mile.
