Lumia 820/920 confirmed for Australia; Pricing and release date comes to Italy

| September 27, 2012 | 65 Replies

First up, I got emailed earlier today about the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 being confirmed for Australia. That is good news as the initial “availability map” (since removed) never included Australia. The Lumia 920 will be launched on Telstra, compatible with their new 4G network. The Lumia 820 will be available to “Vodafone and Optus Business customers”. Information about dates, pricing and colour options will come “late October”. From this, it isn’t expected to see devices until November at least. Full press release can be found at source link.

Secondly, Nokia Italy has reportedly announced that the devices will be coming Mid-November. Also, according to Nokioteca, the Lumia 920 will be available for 599 Euros, and the Lumia 820 at 499 Euros. The devices will be on Telecom Italia, Three, Vodafone & Wind. This seems to be the first official confirmation of pricing, and at least a rough date, besides “Q4″ or “coming weeks”.

Just to make sure we all know: The 649 Euro ($836) for the LUMIA920 in Germany already INCLUDE 19% VAT. So the US like price before taxes is 525 Euro ($678).

Lol. Exactly like I said about the map at the time, when a lot of people were freaking out and damning Nokia (or you know who).

  2. Mato24 says:

    expensive and too late :(

  3. M says:

Come on, US announcement. Maybe they’re trying to get more carriers on board.

  4. Kris says:

Elop’s future at Nokia depends on this, so I hope it’s a flop.

    • Bloob says:

Nokia’s smartphone operations depend on this, so I hope it succeeds.

    • M says:

I’m curious to know what you would have done if you were in Elop’s position. So many people quick to criticize him nowadays without providing a viable alternative to the shaky situation they were in back then. Btw by extension of you hoping that its a flop, you’re also hoping for the downfall of Nokia which is directly tied into whether this launch is a success or not.

      • nn says:

Nokia position wasn’t shaky until Elop made it so. But from the moment he capitulated to Microsoft I agree and he practically couldn’t do anything much differently than how he is doing it, it is one forced decision after another. Which, apparently, is by design.

        • Viipottaja says:

lol. still with the conspiracy theory, eh?

          • nn says:

if only there was conspiracy… the reality it is far worse, Elop probably genuinely thinks he is Nokia’s saviour

          • GordonH says:

LOL. Are you blind or highly addictive to Elop’s fancy terms for killing and strangling EU’s technological advantage in the mainstream consumer market.

        • Mark says:

“Nokia position wasn’t shaky until Elop made it so”

          Absurd.

          • nn says:

I agree, the whole Elop affair looks like the finest absurd tragicomedy, Beckett would be proud to write something like that.

            • Mark says:

              Nokia’s stock price mid 2007 – $40. Nokia’s stock price 2010 just before Elop took over – $10.

The rot was in place long before he got there. To blame it all on Elop is fundamentally stupid or, if you prefer, absurd.

Now do us all a favour and f**k off.

              • nn says:

Yep, the last time Nokia was in good shape was in 2000 when the stock price was $60! From there it is all rot and inevitable march to death, OPK or Elop have nothing to do with that!

Especially pay no attention to the fact that as long as Elop paid lip service to the old MeeGo/Symbian/Qt strategy, the stock was slightly rising to $11, then he dropped the WP bombshell and stock immediately cratered, with Nokia’s overall financials and sales numbers quickly following suit.

      • Maybe says:

If I was in his position I won’t be ditching symbian, Meltemi, Meego and etc. Symbian can work very well in low and mid range smartphones plus the ecosystem was big enough. Meltemi filling the gap between S40 and low range symbian. MeeGo for super and high end smartphone. WP for what they are now or just assume WP/Lumia as E-series. I’m still looking forward for Xpress music with decent dual speakers devices actually and slide keyboard…

  5. xyz says:

    Lumia 820 449 EUR, Lumia 920 599 EUR on cyberport.de

I guess we shouldnt panic. As always with Nokia the price drops soon.

    • Jari says:

Yep, prices on these two devices will drop soon after release cause masses are not buying it, few M$ lovers will. Both will be niche phones compared to Mypony5 and SGS 3. And way too expensive imo. Maybe wd try M$ 920 at 299 euros. Well It wont take for too long and the price will be there.

      • Viipottaja says:

        saved

        • Jari says:

Try to save Nokia as well ;-) I think the price wont come down to 300 Euros, that wd mean they`d be selling the device with heavy loss and it´d be the end of the story. Maybe they are keeping the pricepoint high to maximize the incoming cash cause the phone wont sell tens of millions of units. But if it will be sold at 300, definately will try M$ 920 ;-)

  6. dss says:

The only way any of these phones make sense to buy, is on contract for .. free to maximum $100. I feel like $100 is too much for the 920.. $50 would be better, and that way they can actually sell some of them. The pricing needs to be at least as aggressive, as it was with the 900.. they are loosing money all over the place anyway, another couple of mils here and there, who cares.

    • dss says:

Oh ya, and offer some cash/discount to 900 owners as an upgrade incentive, since they got screwed with the 900 as beta testers.

  7. Mark says:

Not bad. I would prefer it to be available two weeks earlier and want to know UK pricing, but looks OK for launch.

  8. Mato24 says:

Well, I guess the prices won’t drop (in my country at least). Nokia Lumia 800 at Simobil on a contract is about 200eur 24eur/month!!!:) So I reckon that Lumia 920 will be 350eur 35eur/month-way too much for me at least-still a student:)))

  9. Carbontubby says:

The 920 at 600 Euros is about US$770, which is similar to the iPhone 4S 32GB’s unlocked price and probably the iPhone 5′s as well. It’s expensive but it’s supposed to be a flagship. I guess few people will be paying the full price anyway since the 920 will be offered on contract.

  10. FireDragon says:

Amazing to see how people want ‘innovation’ and then they don’t want to pay for the hard work of innovators. Sad attitude. If I am not be able to buy something that doesn’t always mean it is over priced. A NEW always come with a price and it deserves it.

But if you think it didn’t, then you don’t deserve to hold that innovation, because you are not respecting it.

    • Bloob says:

Well, people need incentive to leave their trusted ecosystems, and familiar devices.

      • FireDragon says:

There are people who use something they are given by nature called “brain” and then there are others.

For example, to try something for the first time some people wait and watch others closely. They research, if it is expensive they wait to see if cost will drop and so forth.

And then there are those who lineup for their toys to get weeks before launch and end up getting well you-know-what. :)

    • Mato24 says:

OK, so the Lumia 920 is made in China (Foxconn or whatever), the production price per unit is 20$, and I don’t think that the rest goes to the innovators:) The price is definetly too high-especialy in the EU, where
we have high unemployment and more and more countries are asking for monetary help…This kind of pricing was plausible in 2007, and with Nokia reputation demolished, they should stick with lower prices:) Just my thoughts on this…

      • FireDragon says:

        :) Respected thought of course.

In clothing range, a designer can sale their dress for 5 times more price or so, or at least they tag this way. Same design can replica in half of the actual cost.

Same goes to website or any graphics design, it cost nothing but time yet you can find a design from $15, or some happily pay for $1500.

There are lot of things go into price of products, including existing brand name, and the trust value. Nokia maybe not popular but consumers hardly know much of on going war between companies.

    • Just Visiting says:

#Firedragon…+1. If Nokia prices the Lumia 920 too low, it gives the impression that Nokia doesn’t value their innovation.

They need to price them competively, relative to their innovations (not to mention the 32GB of storage that is included).

      • FireDragon says:

        Thanks. :)

High price point are a head turner, people intent to stop to take a look about what is so soecial behind that big price tag. creating a sense of desire to own something expensive. And then price come down in a few months to acceptable range and consumer could actually take it and show off.

Not necessary this methos works on everyone of course.

  11. Simo says:

Seems like my sources were right again, so these dates don’t surprise me at all. I tweeted this almost a month ago, along with China getting the 920, Tmobile getting the 820, and Verizon possibly getting the 920 in addition to the 820. My source also said (and I tweeted it) that Sprint isn’t getting any of these. All were correct, and all before this became news.

Apparently I can’t link to those specific tweets without moderator approval. See for yourself, @hasasimo. I tweeted all this on Sept. 7.

  12. KF says:

lol htc 8x almost the same price as the 820

  13. JGrove303 says:

I just check AT&T for no commitment pricing, locked to AT&T

    iPhone5 32GB is $749.99USD
SGSIII 16GB (only size) is 549.99USD

    T-Mobile has the 32GB SGSIII for 679.99Usd

cosideing how long the SGSIII has been out and how iPhones don’t drop price, the NAM contract prices on AT&T and T-Mobile should be $200 for the 920, $100 for the 820. Expect Verizon to gouge an extra $100 the first couple weeks..because they’re dicks like that.

    • dss says:

You think $200 for the 920 on att ? That is a bit too much .. if they want to sell then, $100 is the way to go.. with further reduction to $50.. just like what they did with the 900. If you walk into an att store, you can pick up the 900 or 50 bucks

      • viipottaja says:

900 was already very aggressively priced. The 920 is a big to massive step up in all respects. I would he very surprised if.they started to sell at.the same price point a mere 7 months later. Just being realistic here.

    • Just Visiting says:

@JGrove303…I disagree. I think that ATT will price the Lumia 920 at $249 with a 2yr contract, as the device has 32GB of on board memory instead of 16GB.

  14. Law says:

Dam mid November for Australia, Farout and 600 euro, dam I hope it ain’t more than 800aud like the s3 which was 800 aud when it came out here. Too long Nokia, what’s the deal?

  15. kan says:

In the UK the ip5 is £530 for 16gb and £600 for the 32gb. I would expect the Lumia 920 32gb to be priced between £500 and £600.

  16. ms.nokia says:

mid november ? ouch that will hurt Q4 figures,
but with all the publicity the lumia 920 is getting maybe people will wait.
some good news is that apple’s first batch of phones have QC issues, and the wait for deliver is now up to 4 weeks, thats late october,
maybe its not so bad for nokia if the 920 is available in large quantities and wide markets,

the 820 should be 150-200 cheaper than the 920.

Pakistan is a land of opportunities according to VP Nokia but no Lumia 920/820 for Pakistan :O Good good….!

    its huge, she said..

  19. Jammy says:

I don’t know why Nokia is so stubborn with their pricing, always launching overpriced smartphones………. Nokia why don’t you understand it’s transition period for you, and to compete in market you should come with aggressive pricing, not overpricing ur stuff just like Apple, for apple it’s okay because they have loyal fanbase, but other OEM’s don’t have loyal fan base, this same attitude of overpricing their stuffs was reason of RIM’s downfalls, and if you continue in same way then, chances of your recovery is also very slim……… Because there are Many alternatives in market, and if you price ur phones higher then other manufacturers will be taking away the sell from you…………. Please for the first time in life be good with your pricing…….

  20. dndosn says:

Honestly speaking, while appreciating the work the bloggers put into this blog, people who actually support Nokia would be better off at wpcentral or wmpoweruser.

The open source loons also showed their true colours today. Want Nokia to fail so that elopes gets fired. That sounds like the nutjobs alright.

    • Carbontubby says:

Elop gets fired, a total loon like Tomi Ahonen gets onboard to bring back Meego and Symbian, soon followed by total bankruptcy and a fire sale on assets.

I think that’s exactly what some of these nutjobs want. Their favorite operating system just got trashed so they’re on a vendetta. They forget that Nokia, like any other company, exists for present and future profits – sometimes hard decisions have to be made, like dumping previous efforts and starting afresh with Windows Phone. It’s a last stand for a once-mighty company and I grudgingly admire Elop for the balls to do what he’s done, even if half the world hates him for it.

Nokia Norway confirmed Q4 release and will be sold by Telenor, Netcom and Chess, price 4700kr (638 Euro/820 Dollar).
