Video: Nokia: Just Below the ‘Surface’ – Everyday Adventure in Shanghai “You cannot just be a copycat”
Not sure if this is a play on words (“SURFACE”) but the video looks upon the giant that is Shanghai but at a different perspective.
Take a look at a different side of Shanghai, lying just below the surface:http://nokia.ly/Qpc5tx
There’s also a little message there for HTCrap
“You cannot be a copycat, you must create things for yourself”
Does that make sense?

good advertising Nokia, not a single phone in the whole video (and it is still better than the majority of recent Nokias ads)
i love it!
I hope that Surface variant for nokia would be a surprise next week!
Kind of nexus-esque line of Microsoft-Nokia team up
HTCrap must not spread that hoax assumption that they were working with a team designer and thats how 8x design came out.. booom.. AYFKM(are you kidding me)?
No hidden agenda, no flogging of products, no flashy graphics, just Nokia doing what they do best – connecting people. You gotta love ‘em for it.
Also, Shanghai looks incredible:P!
you’ll need a gas mask to survive it those people in the video have lungs of titanium since they’ve been conditioned over the ages
It’s not that bad.
From a foreigner in Shanghai…
Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from a perfect environment, but the whole gas mask thing is wack.
The lung cancer rates in China beg to differ. Just because you haven’t been diagnosed yet doesn’t mean you are not slowly getting it.
And that’s just from the air. When you factor in the chemicals in the food and the disgusting organisms the people leave everywhere, your lifespan in the people’s republic is getting shorter by the day.
Take cancer rates from all other major countries in the world make a clear comparison and post it for those who are new to the subject to be informed in a fair manner!
I am not as misinformed as you suppose and have no fears of this kind here…
The way in which you choose to communicate is just plain irresponsible. Yes the environment in China needs to improve. Yes there are times when certain runaway companies introduce chemicals into their products which are harmful to our health etc.. but four years later and running every night in that said environment and fit as a fiddle mate, stand corrected, at least in part!
Scaremongering is a waste of space, don’t be a waste of space scaremongering!
And frankly saying “disgusting organisms the people leave everywhere” strikes me has a tad bit racist, ignorant and totally full of sht.
Your an ass
And what kind of fkcn name is Bob? It’s 2012, Bob lol…
Idiot!
Wow Bob,
Angry much?
when i was in china for 6 weeks traveling in 2005, i coughed my lungs out, so much pollution from coal plants etc, i can’t imagine how much worse it is now.
I have seen your many comments around the place, and not once did I see anything that I could say, wow I totally disagree…
Until now that is.
Where on earth were you travelling in China to be near so many coal plants within a 6 week period?
I am a self employed minerals consultant for a handful of state owned enterprises. And have travelled the length and breadth of China many, many times in the last 200+ weeks.
Coal plants, power plants and steel mills are never, ever, ever in the heart of populated area’s. It’s the same as any country really…
I can only assume you are in a related field otherwise why spend so much time near coal plants?
And just to put the reality boot in. “So much pollution from coal plants” ????
For those who are bored enough to follow this comment thread, let me clear it up. I am a foreigner living in China, and yes there is pollution, there are a lot of people living poorly in small outlying communities etc.. etc..
But in actual fact, the pollution is not at such a level that you cough your lungs out for six weeks, I come on…
There are provinces in China that are absolutely pristine and stunning, full of natural beauty, the first to spring to mind is Xinjiang…
Why do we feel the need to over exaggerate the truth about China?
Unbelievable…
believe it
didn’t the chinese government close down many coal plants before the olympics?
didn’t some athletes arrive in china wearing masks ?
i didnt even mention the reactions i got to some of the foods, we where all advised by the chinese tour guide to not eat any eggs at the hotels as they where fake.
and do you really expect anyone to believe that pollution is not a major/serious issue in china ?
living in china for 200+ weeks does not make you an expert, in-fact it may leave you biased.

I never expected anyone to believe pollution isn’t a major serious issue, that’s ridiculous, in fact you can clearly tell that from my comment.
I was doubting the severity of your particular comment specifically, and still do.
I’m well informed about the pollution issues. But providing a plethora of links doesn’t successfully change the focus of your original comment at all, sorry.
And adding to that, I never tried to come across as any kind of expert, but how you can so blatantly try to do the same thing from 6 weeks experience and load of articles is a joke.
Again, pollution is a major serious problem, but I doubt your original comment, holds much truth at all.
It’s really amazing to watch the whole WP8 marketing tactic from Nokia.
Do Elop really thinks that he can turn Lumia into something like uber-Apple? That people will pay premium for essentially the same product, just because it is called Lumia? Even Apple is fighting the “copycats” in courts, but Elop is behaving as if Lumia is absolute top brand, you just need to whisper the name and – pronto – everybody is mindlessly buying all you hand him.
Something bugging you? Grow up.
Well, yes, the continual destruction of Nokia is little bit unsettling, but I get it that for you it’s entertaining show and funny one to watch.
Give up with the whole dramatic “destruction of Nokia” blsht!
Fckn drama queen.
Lots of people out there love Nokia as a company and the products they make,
But in the end they are just a business, there’s no destruction, it’s just calculated risk management….
Your an ass, fist class
get a grip dude.
yeah, that was a little drama queen’ish in it’s own right lol…
According to Bob it’s because I’m not wearing a suitable gas mask, being based in Shanghai and all that…
he’s just not an idiot….he’s not gullible
What marketing tactic do you mean exactly? What is the “premium” and “same product”? Compared to what? Other WPs you mean? Also, not quite sure what about this video prompted your comment? What exactly about what Elop says makes you think he thinks people will just mindlessly buy? Should they stop marketing Lumias altogether, talking them up altogether, adding apps and services to them altogether?
Just a few questions that sprang to mind.
Please see below for answers to your questions:
1. The biggest in industry
2. Premium = Nokia, Same product = HTC & Samedung
3. Copycats
4. The rest
5. Grudge
6. It`s the best product
7.
Ps. I know you`re not a hater:)
Thanks. And I hate a lot of things.
Just to give you an example: people who stand on moving WALKways (i.e. note: not STANDways!!!) at airports. Luckily for them guns are not allowed at airports.
I doubt you’ve taken the red eye flight, sitting next to the moron in coach who has a cold of some rare kind, coughing and sneezing for 12 hours straight!
And on the other side another nightmare individual who thinks personal hygiene is part is a natural DNA acid trip…
Hate all you want but when I have to spend hours more in transit after hours of no sleep HK international airport walking from arrival gate 001 to gate 167, I’ll take all the creature comfort liberties I can get…
How often do you travel? Wait don’t answer that question, I know you’ll fabricate some not so clever lie for a comeback, and actually I won’t be back here to read it anyway,
Your an ass…
Wow. I travel about 90 to 120 days a year.
And sorry if my attempt that humor offended you.
Ok, I concede to being a little charged on this topic…
No harm done then?
No harm done, at all.
And I sympathize with my fellow travelers! I am fortunate enough to have my employer pay business class on business trips, but do travel long haul in coach/economy too fairly frequently with my family for vacation times at our respective home/original countries.
Cheers,
I’m self employed and tend to go coach whenever I travel for business.
Business class for family, lol
It’s a reverse priority for me in that regard.
wants to be different….uses OS that everyone else is using and turns into an OEM company…NOKIA FAIL…you are NO DIFFERENT ANYMORE
He, Nokia made horrible software
Hell, even their Symbian ui was horrid compared to the others.
Of the s60v5s, Samsung had the best one, nokia’s s60 “skin” was way worse
Symbian was not horrid, in many ways it changed the scene for pre-smartphone mobiles in the same way Apple did with touch…
Only problem was when they tired to bring Symbian through to the world of touch. Kinda like a fish out of water.
Symbian takes a lot of sht these days from people who really don’t get it…
Yes Nokia should have taken the whole touch thing a little more seriously and created a new platform from the ground up to start with. And yes they should have evolved faster when they first noticed their strategy was no longer at the cutting edge, but so many companies have come and gone, what was their names? LOL
Nokia is a survivor, and Symbian was not the real issue anyway…
Elop doesn’t have all the answers, but he does have a strategy, and it can work…
Hate on, lol.
Wants to be best, makes the best product = IS THE BEST.
Erm, the OS everyone is using.
If Nokia went with Android, it would have been the OS ‘everyone’ was using.
iF Nokia was successful with MeeGo, it would have been the OS many were using
If Nokia was (and for a time there were many partners) successful with Symbian, we’d see continued use of the same OS by many manufacturers.
Did you miss the part where Nokia was and always has been working to try and live with other manufacturers that use the same OS?
BTW, your comments are NO DIFFERENT ANYMORE. Nothing new. Move on DSB.
Jay,
I’m not disagreeing here, but want to point out a small fact. Nokia was somewhat more successful with N9/Meego than most people know…
Just ordered the Surface RT now available in 8 countries including China for preorder.
I’m loving Nokia Express beta because I can now download pages on the go in areas I could not before and the magazine part is rather nice for reading.
Nokia playing with the words again
I like it.
Totally different topic, but here is a nice video from Russia, demonstrating 920′s neat OIS
HTCopy and Samesung
So I heard that Microsoft is contract manufacturing tablets for Nokia.
It’s clear they’re carry-on the same theme used for the N9′s (brief/minuscule) marketing in China, the “unfollow” campaign.
To clarify, not exclusively carrying-on that theme, but there’s clear elements of it when you look at vids for both campaigns, which makes sense.
It’s clear they’re carry-on the same theme used for the N9′s (brief/minuscule) marketing in China, the “unfollow” campaign.
….
that is a smart add, it’s promoting young Chinese people, it plays up to and endorses the feelings and aspirations of the younger generation. it’s almost a tribute to chinese youth.
How can the young chinese not agree with the add and in turn subconsciously agree with nokia.
i think its a great way to gain “believers” and consumer loyalty.
I like the sound of that.
Actually the young Chinese are much more empowered and creative this generation and no doubt coming generations than ever before.
You can see that everyday here.
Nokia is on to a good thing with this direction.
Wow. Sorry if I offended you with my I guess poor attempt at humor.
I travel internationally about every six weeks for a total of about 90-120 days a year.
