Tom Warren from TheVerge suggests that the next version of Windows might just be called…Windows.

Whether Windows Phone or Windows RT, there won’t be additional monikers to differentiate them. It’ll all just be windows. So gone might be the days where Windows Phone fans scowl at folks for calling Windows Phone 8, “Windows 8”. It’ll all just be “Windows” and everyone will be right, that their phone or tablet or PC etc has “windows”.

It all seems part of the streamlining of brands. Phone side, we’re seeing just “Lumia” with “Windows”.

Tom says either Microsoft doesn’t care about mentioning Windows Phone or that they’re pushing to have just “windows” in preparation for when RT merges with Windows Phone.

Further hints are seen in Microsoft’s plans for future Windows updates, the next expected to be Windows 9 could simply just be “Windows”.

Internally, the combined RT/WP is called “Windows Mobile”, the name of WP’s predecessor. Lastly, as Tom points out, some think that Windows, due to all the negative connotations, should be dropped completely (how many times do people say it’s just full of viruses and causes bluescreen and stutters and is slow? WP is the complete opposite but some have that preconceived notions).

In TheVerge’s poll, 54% majority prefers just “windows”.
