Meltemi and Nokia’s fight back on cheaper Androids?

Continuing the focus of better value Nokias – cheaper devices but packing more for your money, we’re looking not just as cheaper Windows Phone but to Meltemi.

Reuters published a recent article talking about Nokia’s fightback on cheaper Androids. Though published yesterday, there is nothing new here but it’s interesting that it is being discussed again.

Part of the lower end fight is bringing Lumia Windows Phone down to cheaper and cheaper markets. Reuters say WP has had little impact due to the high prices of phones using it – hence why the likes of the Lumia 610 and possible cheaper siblings might be more important right now than the future upcoming rumoured superphones.

The likes of Tango lowers requirements whilst still maintaining much of the high quality user experience. But as we mentioned earlier today, there will still be segments that even Windows Phone cannot reach, perhaps not even Symbian.

But it could be done by Meltemi, a Linux based OS from Nokia that might replace S40 – the worlds most popular phone platform.

Might Meltemi be the similarly Linux based Smarterphone OS, recently purchased by Nokia? It’s also worth remembering Marko Ahtisaari’s hints that Nokia will bring Swipe user experience not just to high end, but also to low end devices.

With 1.5B S40 phones racking up hundreds of millions in sales per year (and make up about 30% of the 13M daily downloads at Nokia Store), it would be a very quick way for Nokia to re-establish smartphone marketshare.
