Freeware: UK Rail – Train Timetables for your Nokia N97, 5800, Samsung i8910 and other S60 5th Edition Phone

This application is a must have for anyone who travels frequently (or at all) on a train. Whenever I needed to travel by train, I used to go to www.thetrainline.com. You can access it from your S60 browser directly or you can choose the mobile version, m.thetrainline.com, which is more economic on the data and a little easier to use (though needing lots of page clicks).
This free application from S60dev.com goes one step further in making it easier to find your train times. No more loading up the browser and tapping in the bookmark or clicking through page after page.

Just type your details in, connect to your data…

And you get a list of available trains.

It’s currently only works in portrait mode. At least it doesn’t attempt to rotate and distort the page when you open the keyboard on the N97.
The only niggle would be inputting the date – it’s not hard but if it used the same style for putting the time in, that would be fantastic.
Other than that it’s a really great application and you should go get it now! >>Download from S60 Dev << It’s a free application, but I’m sure donations are more than welcome.
Some suggestions: -
- History/Save search result – so you don’t have to input your details again if you just wanted to check again
- Return option – so you don’t have to input the opposite details

Free Game: Match’em for Nokia N97, 5800, and Samsung i8910
July 11, 2009 at 7:37 pm | In 5th Edition, Applications, Freeware, Nokia | 1 CommentTags: 5800, 5th Edition, Checkers, Express Music, Free, Freebie, Freeware, Games, Match'em, N97, Nokia, Nokia 5800, Nokia N97, Omnia HD, S60, S60v5, Samsung i8910, Symbian
From moubail.com is this free “match’em game”, where the aim is to match multiple icons on the screen. It’s touch based (though a little flakey) but for N97 users you can also use the D-Pad. It’s a little harder than it looks, as you’ve got to put some thought into what order you’re going to start matching up.

To download it, click here to be redirected to moubail’s download page. Scroll down, download and send to your phone via bluetooth/cable or access the site from your phone directly.
And if you haven’t already, you might also want to download the free checkers game too.

It works in both landscape and portrait.

Freeware: Stopwatch/Countdown with Time Machine for Nokia 5800 and S60 5th Edition
May 15, 2009 at 9:25 am | In 5th Edition, Applications, Freeware, Nokia, S60, Symbian | 1 CommentTags: Nokia, S60, Freeware, N97, Symbian, Nokia N97, 5800, Nokia 5800, Free, S60 5TH EDITION, Freebie, Samsung i8910, Samsung Omnia HD, S60v5, Time Machine, Stop Watch, Count Down, Timer, Clock
The Time Machine app for the Nokia 5800 is both a stop watch and a countdown timer. When the countdown reaches zero, an alarm sounds. Pretty useful if you’re cooking something or as a parking meter alert. Yeah, you can use the general alarm clock but it’s easier to put in “n” minutes countdown and constantly see throughout how many minutes you have left.
There’s a dedicated app for S60 third edition called Parking Buddy just for countdown – it’s even got a nifty siren as an alarm that made my friend pull over on the side of the road when she thought it was an actual police car. This is a nicer solution given that it does both countdown and stop watch.
A friend of mine recommended I use stop watches for revision – to actually tally the amount I’m spending revising as opposed to sitting on my arse looking like I’m revising.
If you want a count down for sport/running you’ll be better off with Nokia Sports Tracker, as that logs your GPS route, speed, altitude, steps taken as well as your Lap times.
Anyway, Time Machine for 5800 is available to download for free from my-symbian.com

Free Game: Crimson for S60 5th and 3rd edition

This doesn’t seem to work with me, but maybe you can get some fun out of it.
“The outcome of the war lies in your hands. You decide which units are sent to the front lines, and when to unleash the reserves. Your mission objectives range from defending strategically vital locations to simply destroying all enemy forces in the area. Protect supply convoys or raid enemy facilities to uncover technological secrets or fill your storage bays so you can repair damaged units or build new ones in your own factories. Lead your troops to victory!
Crimson Fields is a turn-based tactical war game. It can be played against a human opponent in hot-seat mode in front of the same machine, over a network, or via e-mail, or against the computer.
The game comes with tools for creating custom maps and campaigns, and a converter for maps from the classic games Battle Isle and History Line.”

Free Application: PhoneTorch for 5800 (and other S60 5th Edition with LED flash)

The time when you need torches the most is when they’re hardest to get to – in a black out (or brown out as they oddly call it in the Philippines). And looking for a torch is only useful if you actually own one to start with. No point trying to find the torch to check what’s rolled under your bed/sofa if you haven’t even got a torch.
Here’s a FREE application that allows Nokia 5800 owners to use the white and red LED flash as a torch.
It has a simple start/stop, switch colour mode and even the ability to convert your text into morse code flash! How brilliant is that? But now all you need is for someone else to be able to understand morse code (although it maybe useful in certain emergency situations where a flashing light maybe the only way to contact for help…such as attracting a boat if you’re desserted on an island, because that’s very likely to happen)

Please be aware that you install this at your own risk. Also there are two installation methods for signed and unsigned.
You can view these instructions and download the application from http://dev.meh.at/.
Make sure though that you download the most recent version to get the latest features.

Now if only we can return to the intuitiveness of the likes of the N93’s dedicated flash/torch button.

Here’s a freeware arcade game, where you avoid hitting the green blocks to survive. Sounds slightly crappy but its simplicity is actually quite addictive and for the price of 0.00, it’s a worthwhile click and install for those moments where you just need to pass the time.
Download it here.

If you still don’t know what it’s about, you can get the jist of the game from this version on UIQ3
You should expect an improved version to play on your 5800 or whatever S60 5th edition you’re using.

Nokia All In One Torch!
September 25, 2007 at 4:45 am | In Applications, Freeware, S60 | 7 CommentsTags: 3rd edition, Freeware, Nokia, S60, Torch

(Camera cap is covering led slightly, plus this N93 is dimmer than my other one – but you get the jist)
Most N93 users will tell you that the one-touch-torch button is extremely useful for tasks beyond the simple video light/flash it was intended for. My N93 is my torch, albeit, not comparable to dedicated versions, but super handy since it’s always there with me73 (I have no idea where my Maglite and the battery is most likely dead)

There were applications previously available to S60 that allowed the flash to be used as a torch. I remember installing Ntorch for my N73, but that was convincingly feeble in that it didn’t use the relatively more powerful flash of the N73 (than the N93) but the subdued, frankly, not so useful video light level.
The “Nokia All in One Torch” is a new application for your S60 device (with flash) that may change all that.

I haven’t tried this out yet, but the features blurb from series-sixty blog sounds very appealing.
- - An Actual First-of-its-kind Strobe Light
- - High Intensity LED Illumination
- - Current Status Notification (via pop-up interface)
- - Instantaneous Launch
- - One-Tap Exit (via right softkey)
- - Compatibility with MOST S60 3rd Edition Devices (N73, N80, N95 and more)
Since I’m reading several blog warnings about the possibility of wearing out the LED, I’m assuming this application utilises full brightness of the flash, or at least close to that. If the LED isn’t so bright, i.e. N93 vs N95, then that’s the max brightness you should expect.
