Video: Nokia N8 running new OVI Maps 3.06 (pinch to zoom, public transit line layer, better search and more!)

| December 5, 2010 | Comments (12)

On Friday, Llaadd gave us an overview of the new changes in Ovi Maps 3.06.

Here TheRacerex has a video demonstrating the major changes on the Nokia N8

  • Pinch to zoom (in map and 3d mode) for S^3
  • Layer maps for public transit lines
  • Smart search – gives you a “did you mean” suggestion if you mistype a place name
  • Search as you type
  • Not shown in video but a great addition of new Ovi Maps is you can download all maps directly from your phone without the need for the PC. Find some WiFi, easy peasy.

There’s many more improvements and you can read that in llaadd’s post.

I note that is actually still officially a ‘beta’ version, although it does look good!

Based on Nokia’s usual track record, can I ask when is it expected to ‘go gold’ as it were?

    Thanks.

Watch this incredible Shell called “SPB mobile Shell 3.7″ and it runs over Symbian^3 !!

FOR ALL THE PEOPLE U ARE NOT A BIG FAN OF SYMBIAN^3…..U WILL LOVE IT! ;)

  3. Rock says:

he’s using the keypad with split screen.. jealous!

I don’t get what the hype is all about with drag screens, it is actually much slower than just switching the screen without animation; and with drag screens some times even in iOS4 (as in my iPod Touch) it gets stuck when the stroke isn’t long enough to switch to the next screen.

    • alex68 says:

I did not see any sticking problem nor slowness at all when I tested the draggable homescreens for about 2 hours when making the demo video. Of course it has only 3 homescreen and Nokia uses a folder instead of a flat system that may make performance difference. However, I did see the batter drain effectively as the draggable homescreens are animated.

I love the fact Ovi Maps is a free service etc etc. but man, this thing looks jerky even with graphics acceleration, and faster processor running on S^3… I thought my 5800XM was slow, but it’s just the code which still isn’t up to google level in smoothness. What release will this be when it gets fully coded in Qt?

    • Don says:

Actually it’s quite zippy, and much better than it used to be in the 5800.

It only gets slower (relative term) in 3D mode showing lots of landmarks.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Google only does image tiling (and doesn’t even offer TBT navigation here); Ovi maps are rendered on the fly from vector data (for example streetnames are always in a readable spot and “follow” you when you scroll).

Of course a real well-coded OpenGL backend should still scroll this at 60fps, landmarks or no. Either ovi maps will evolve to this, or someone else is going to write it using the excellent Mobility API’s (once they include vector data…)

  6. alex68 says:

New Ovi map is integrated with contact book so you can find an address of contact book in the ovi map for navigation when visiting an acquaintance or a friend. I find it very useful and practical feature.

    • mj says:

      That is a great feature!

      Dear alex68,

firstly thanks for all the updates and heads-up you’ve been giving us on the N8. Do you have any news on when the next firmware is coming out? You said approx 2 weeks on a post of yours on 17/11 if I remember right, but no official statements from nokia yet. Are we getting this any time before 2k11 then?

      cheers
