Video collection: 30 FPS Nokia N8 video samples from the community

| December 12, 2010 | Reply

Remember when hyperX released the 30FPS 720p video mod for the Nokia N8?

Here are some great video samples of that in action. One thing, regardless of 25 (standard) or 30 (hack) FPS, N8’s videos are looking spectacular.

Performance in ample lighting is amazing but equally so in low light well all others would falter.

Just check out the third video – I got surprised at one point where they turn the light ON in the room how much N8 could pick up. There are also a couple of continuous autofocus videos included in this post.

These first two are remarkably clear. Note, this is what N8 does without the mod. Possibly difference only is in frame rate.

Audio is also superb – something no other manufacturer can touch Nokia on at the moment.

This doesn’t look like something from a mobile phone.

Note Nokia are hinted to be working on 30FPS and continuous autofocus.

It’s not so much 1 guy (HyperX) versus a team of engineers – Nokia aren’t happy with the performance and want this bit just right. E.G. Why we only have about 3x digi zoom in video when obviously we can have crazy 30x digital zoom and pixelated blocks.

e.g. I think this mod is heavily affected by running apps as noted by some samples where frames are dropped if you have something heavy in background.

This sample is from a month ago staring a cat and a dog. Very long

From Brazil

Looking very smooth. N8 driving – 30fps

Now here’s the noticable difference – when you get some continuous autofocus as that means even close up subjects are very much in focus.

Finally here’s indoor, very dark, continous autofocus action more obvious (zooming into printed text)

You can hear the N8 focusing in this video.

I love this always ready video and stills camera. My Digicam sits in the drawer missing all the spontaneous action.

    That is awesome!

Nokia should definitely add 30FPS and Autofocus in FP2 update.

As for those claiming 24FPS is enough, Movies are shot, blah blah blah, Nokia’s camera takes progressive shots, not single frame shots – Ever seen a video where a car’s windshield wipers bend? That’s progressive, so the more FPS the better.

It DOES benefit and improve the quality.

Nokia will add it later, and they have said that the reason it is currently not yet enabled is that the current software version is not 100% stable all the time with the 30 fps enabled, and that is the reason it has been disabled. But they will enable it with some coming firmware update (I think that is early next year when the user interface will be updated and a bunch of software will be updated too, 50 features will be added or fixed).

And 30fps is used only with NTSC that is used in about 10% of the world, rest use PAL or SECAM that need 25fps. But however, 25fps is awkward in the US and will be added when the software is ready for it.

30 FPS would be a welcome addition, but it’s really tap to focus during video recording that a lot of us would like to see. I personally find that to be a better solution than continuous autofocus. Even tap to focus for taking photos would be great. You could even use the same onscreen capture key. You could tap the area you want to focus, then tap the capture key, or just tap the capture key and it’ll focus and capture like it does now. Those are two upgrades I’d love to see, but I don’t think the people at Nokia will ever do it.

the N8 is freaking insane , i was working on a project where i had to do some filming outside, and there has been alot of snow here.

I was shooting using a HDV Sony z1, but i also done some video on my n8, after it when editing , i swear in some shots the N8 looked almost better (freaking amazing low light from a phone). I am now set on doing my next shot only on a N8 and seeing if i can get a proper broadcast piece out of it.

Can’t wait to see the final results. Post it on vimeo will you?

    • Smith

Seconded. Would love more on this, if you can post e.g. comparison videos taken at the same time and place from Z1 and N8, even. 30 seconds. And if in different conditions, e.g. low light and sun light, even better!

I have a professional documentary maker friend who I tried to sell the idea of the N8 too and he just dismissed it saying it wasn’t good enough for pro work. And maybe it isn’t for some. But would be great to see it pushed as far as possible by people who use pro equipment like the Z1 and know what they’re doing.

So yes, please post on Vimeo and get Jay to do a story on here telling people!

      Many thanks!

PS – Just to confirm we’re talking about the Sony HVR Z1, right?

I really hope Nokia adds 30 FPS and Autofocus in the next major update. Although I would definitely want them to allow us to choose to have 25 FPS AND EDoF in video settings…..

    umm http://pnht.org/?p=389 n8 jailbroken lol

ok overall 30f/s is good but 25f/s is better in terms of moving object like really eye caching and more light caching, I personally wish that nokia will add Autofocus that will be the perfect N8/cameraphone ever
