Video: Official PR2.0 presentation with a peek at PR3.0

| March 12, 2011 | 49 Replies

In this video you’ll see a presentation about the upcoming firmware PR2.0 for Symbian^3. Much of it we’ve seen before, previewed either by Alex68 or other folks downloading the firmware through navifirm. Cheers to Adnan for this tip (credit added to other guys around this post too)

  • PR2.0 Demoed on the Nokia E7
  • The slide below concerns me because it shows the utter delusion to brand PR2.0/S^3 UI a visual excitement. It’s not totally horrendous as certain other blogs may thing, but nor is it as good as it needs to be. This is coming in PR3.0 perhaps. But to call the current UI visual excitement….well it’s rather premature. Improved usability, yes, I can agree to that, what with the 50+ much needed (should have been there from get go) improvements.
  • Pinch zoom is still not smooth. Check out the choppiness and the chequered tiling. WTF. Why is that still there?
  • Demo of the tabbed browsing interface we previewed in Feb. Seems to have improved over what Alex68 had demoed in terms of windows sliding speed. Still needs to be MUCH faster. It would also have been better a a grid I think.
  • According to es.nokiamovilblog (translated) it says PR2.0 is coming imminently. Hmm. Having heard that story for PR1.0 (through rumours I must point out, not from Nokia) I’m less inclined to believe. It should be here by April based on current rumours. We are aware that unfortunately not everyone has even got PR1.1 yet. This may be an issue with your network provider and their modified firmwares (many other reasons too.
  • PR3.0 (or the UI overhaul expected this fall/autumn) is shown in the very first title slide.

There’s photos of PR2.0 on the N8 and the E7. Sayantan, Adnan  had tipped these.

In the same post, but also tipped by Arts and and hhh csc is a blurry video of PR2.0 on the N8.

  1. John says:

Its obvious the Symbian UI overhaul is just a cosmetic thing rather than a complet new thing which is disappointing and nothing to shout about

    • Jay Montano says:

@John, Cosmetic changes to Symbian were all that it really needed. This was overlooked.

It’s attention to detail that makes for the complete experience. Sure it is so bountiful of features but that’s no good when it makes it hard for non-hardcore users to use. Today’s users expect UIs where you don’t need to learn it. It needs to be more “natural”. No hiding things in maze of menus. Adding eye candy/animation/transition to fool the user by hiding delays, to demonstrate the flow/movement from one area of the OS to another or just by making it seem more modern.

e.g. portrait to landscape switching. It NEEDS an animation to show it’s switching orientation. Not a black blip screen that looks like it suddenly just died or froze.

      • John says:

I get that but when Nokia said UI overhaul I was thinking something more dramatic like when Windows phone 7 came out, something that works completely different, I dont know if cosmetic changes will be enough I can just see the headlines on Engadget and Gizmodo. Still looking forward to what Nokia will bring with PR 3.0 though, thats why I have kept my N8.

        • Jay Montano says:

We have only seen a little of what’s coming with PR3.0. Just the homescreen and menu (though I’m hoping it’s much more) and that’s possibly not the finished piece.

In comparison to what Symbian looks like now, it is quite an overhaul. That’s not really saying much though.

PR2.0 barely changes anything in terms of appearance. PR3.0 is where it’s at. Shame it has taken soooooooooooo long to get barely this far with it.

        • Pdexter says:

Well i don’t own any S^3 device but as far as i have understood the new UI has been always talked to be out by end of this year(it being Nokia it could be early next year).

When you read these texts always remember to use your own brain. If they say that UI on PR1.2 will get changes and UI overhaul is later on that always means you are getting enchacements and maybe cosmetic changes…. not UI overhaul.

I do really like the new Symbian UI we have seen with the drag down menu, my favorite part of Android.

      • mee go MAD says:

true symbian has everything except good looks

qt, good battery, good file system, store, quickest phone to switch on(about 5x faster comparing to my friends ipods and androids)

      • webos vs ios says:

        well said,

        nokia really need cosmetic changes!
it will be interesting to see in the near future that next symbian flagship outsell nokia windows phone 7

        thanks

        • mee go MAD says:

          sad to say it wont.

theres is a lot more R&D money going into wp7 to make it better

          its advertised more

          its more popular
          more apps and games etc

but symbian will stay in the lead for another year

lets not forget symbian was great it was the foundation. it made the other os’es what they are now. Symbian was the the first true smartphone os. and it will have features that ANY other os’es wont have for a while

          • webos vs ios says:

if consumers want apps and games, they can buy iphone now, why wait for the nokia wp7 and give some years for nokia to please developers?

if consumers want eyecandy, they can go for ios and webos, microsoft design is not good-looking

anyway good luck to nokia, i will use n900 till it dies and choose the best phone then, i still give a first priority to meego phone from whatever company, then webos and ios.

            • mee go MAD says:

i have to point out that your wrong

              microsoft will never give up
windows its costly and theres so many alternatives but i only use windows and its the same with many people

ps2 vs xbox microsoft lost id say
buy xbox 360 is more successful that ps3
they keep on investing more things now

              tablets? win8 will have it

microsoft has almost unlimited money to spend so they can get back in the game, and they research for the future, you wont believe some of the things microsoft is doing behind the curtains

wp7 wont surpass anything but it will bring windows into the bigger market and windows makes lots of changes in the next one like they always do so they will surpass sometime in the future.

wp7 development is going a lot faster than ios and android and its only a matter of time until its as good as the others

              • agree, microsoft can change everything again because they have money.

but now, i just dont like the three physical buttons on the wp7 phone and the tiles ui homescreen, it is not very user-friendly! can they change it because of the symbian user complaints?

                • mee go MAD says:

they tried to be mre simplified

they might make customizations for some people

microsoft isnt control freak like apple

        • Jay Montano says:

Hopefully the brains in charge of Nokia doesn’t feel the need to under-market/delay certain handsets for fear of cannibalizing sales.

Just give every effort to all products. Nokia should be worried about competitors affecting their sales NOT their own product line ups.

    • Thomas says:

This is not the UI upgrade only a new icons. The UI will com in the pr.3.0 upgrade. alle qt based an all new..

  2. Schneider says:

Whoa wait, the first video is just embarassing to watch. His voice is annoying, their demo examples don’t even work, the first one loses contact with the TV the second lags enormously.

The people don’t even listen to what he is saying.

Nokia need to take things seriously… :(

  3. despisethesun says:

I wonder if PR2.0 will come with a proper release of Qt 4.7. Seems like this would be an opportune time to release it.

  4. Allan says:

With Symbian on death row and all this discussion might be getting more pointless by the day. On the other hand, I would actually like to see a great version of Symbian, if only to prove it could be possible.

I’m not so sure it’s only the UI that needs fixing. Not if that only means adding a little extra gloss here and there. The UX is SO inconsistent! Think about it, how do you exit the web browser, ovi store and ovi maps? They each have different ways!

Also, have you tried using a mouse with the thing? It’s actually pretty pleasant in a way, because it’s more precise, but on my N8 it kept freezing up for just a few milliseconds every few milliseconds. I wonder if this is something in the core and if so it this is part of the reason why the interaction at no time seems as fluid and responsive as on say an iPhone or a WP7.

Symbian WILL be completely “redone”, it will be called WP7, and maybe that will help Nokia better understand what it takes to create a great UX.

The thing is, I really like Symbian for its multitasking, file system access, etc. But as the competition comes up with alternatives such as airplay vs. the FM transmitter or Skydrive/dropbox vs. sending files via Bluetooth or transferring via usb, Symbian really starts to look dated.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

  5. Dafa says:

I think maybe we can forget Nokia’s browser.

The only thing we need is Opera with pinch-zoom.

  6. mark says:

Still haven’t gotten PR1.1 yet….Grrr… Will I be able to get PR3.0 in April? Scratching my head and wondering…

  7. Rudeboi says:

I think it’s good for the new UI for Symbian but a bit late and accordance to them using windows 7 software. I’ll stick to my N900 for now but have tried the windows 7 phone and I really like the UI and the marketplace and looking forward to seeing where that will take Nokia far as a presence in the States. However I’m all over the MeeGo device for I just love linux and the opensource stuff that goes along with it. Don’t really need apps but functionality and something unique

  8. Steff says:

    Hello,
in PR2.0 keyboard will support multitouch?

  9. VEXFACE says:

I HAVE A ROGERS N8(I LIVE IN NEW YORK) I HAVE BOTH ATT AND TMOBILE. i’m trying to unlock it without any success..any software or site where i can get some help?

    • jj says:

You should be able to have Rogers unlock it for a fee.

    • deep space bar says:

your fucked bro you should just bought it unlocked the price dropped as well

the worst thing to do is by a carrier locked phone….cause 2 of my friends have it on rogers and never even received PR1.1 as yet……i got it 1 1/2 month ago like everyone else

  10. andri says:

indigo make a theme with new symbian icon
    it’s available on ovi store
or visit ind190.com for more information

  11. dfa says:

the ovi store and maps icons are not like the others. and you call that a “cosmetic update??” let me smile! it’s strange. Is it a real pr 2.0? thanks for the joke nokia!

    • Glenn says:

They are 3rd party software, eg when you get a new S^3 phone you dont have the latest Ovi Maps or Ovi Store, they are updated independantly of the OS

But i agree they should have the UID or something to change the icons

  12. Bazil says:

I don’t like those childish iphone-like icons. The current ones are way better. Some people seem to be obsessed with the iphone, and want everything to be like it. They have kept whining about the “old” Nokia icons, but in fact current Ovi-style icons are better and more modern than those similar-with-each-other rounded ones. I don’t want every icon on my phone to look the same, it’s ugly and counter-productive.
