Confirmed? New Nokia N8/C7 shipping with Symbian Anna. (Update)

| July 7, 2011 | 75 Replies

Update: 08-07-2011. Dinesh Subramaniam from Communications team at Nokia wrote in our comments:

“…I also wanted to apologise for the misleading information from our twitter account. It was in reply to some folks who were asking about the N8 with Symbian Anna. Instead of saying that they “will start shipping in July” as per our announcement last month in Singapore, the account mentioned “started shipping in July”.

Nokia’s twitter account is confirming that Anna is now appearing on new N8s and new Nokia C7s, with shipping on those handsets already having started. It’s good to hear that things mentioned in Nokia Connection are clicking into place. Other S^3 (E7/C6-01) might have this too, it just hasn’t been asked from Nokia. The proof though is actually seeing these Anna N8s in store. Have you caught sight of one yet? Be sure to check out if it has continuous AF as suggested will be a N8 specific feature

Let’s hope, as the post earlier on End-Of-August Symbian Anna for CURRENT customers suggests, it make the schedule too.

I’ve heard software isn’t the only things improved on these newer N8s. Can’t confirm but it’s a normal thing that later models will have even kinks in hardware ironed out.

Does it mean we can soon download Anna firmware on Navifirm and “sideload” it?

    • Aliqudsi

shouldnt be too hard, personally I hope so and I plan on doing it if its released before the last week of july. (not too close too august or else I’ll wait

  • NO#

Anna runs ok on old arm11 s3 like n8
for belle 1ghz new symbian devices are required, forget belle on n8 so……

    • Goc

Where did you get this information?
      Any proof?

      • stylinred

        he doesnt

    • N00-00

I’ve a C7 running a developer version of Anna and is faster than N8 or E7 running PR1.1\2

      *Bzzt* incorrect.

“Also in 2012, in addition to Windows Phone devices there will be new Symbian devices – new software updates – new update in 3rd quarter (anna)
More updates (Belle?) end of 2011 or “beginning” of 2012″

“In 2012 we’ll continue with S^3. Symbian^3 updates will be given free to existing customers. Goal to have all S^3 devices with existing specifications supported.”

    • Aliqudsi

then how do you explain Belle running on N8 and E7s? seriosuly get your facts straight or go lie to someone else

      • Rex

Actually we havn’t really got a video on the firmware working on N8 and E7. It could have very well been a screenshot picture viewed in the gallary.

    • arts.

on anadtech, one of the more objective review sites, i remember they state that the grunt of the transitions and ui stuff is done by the gpu. if the belle ui improvements is based on the gpu im pretty sure it will come. but if it relies on the cpu, im kinda worried it wont be as awesome as the 1ghz symbians.

      • arts.

        http://www.anandtech.com/show/4126/nokia-n8-review-/3

        an extract:

“Nokia’s choice of using an aged ARM 11 implementation, down-clocked to 680 Mhz (instead of the spec’d 772 Mhz) for its CPU may draw criticism in this day and age of gigahertz-capable, multi-core mobile SoC’s. But digging a little deeper seems to show that there may be some method to this madness. You see, pretty much everything in the N8 runs around the BCM2727 media processor. I would hazard a calculated guess that apart from lightweight low-level OS functions and interfacing with the baseband and other radio’s, there isn’t much else for the CPU to do on the N8. Plus, Symbian’s inherently efficient use of available resources helps too.”

        • N00-00

Another “rumour” is that the processors in the current Symbian^3 devices will be reclocked with the Belle update to its max 772MHz or somewhere near to that..

      • N00-00

Graphics is run on the GPU in Symbian^3 and the native implementation of Qt painter uses the GPU(as far as I know). The difference can be easily seen when u run the same QT code(graphics-heavy) on Symbian^3 and Symbian^1(or S60 5th edition) devices.. The difference is huge..

    • akse

Why would it need 1ghz? Belle is fully Qt UI and should be completely gpu accelerated. Besides there are already many apps made with Qt that run fluently in N8 etc.

    • Bas

      true that

    • Ninja

      > Anna runs ok on old arm11 s3 like n8
for belle 1ghz new symbian devices are required, forget belle on n8 so……

Folks, for the record this is what happens on Android – it NEEDS Ghz+ CPUs for performance because the CPU is the only thing an Android device knows about. Even worse, Android doesn’t understand multi-core CPUs properly.

Symbian meanwhile uses the extremely powerful GPU (fastest on the market in any shipping device when N8 came out) for as much as possible (in yet another demonstration of it’s clear superiority over Android, as if one were needed), and I’d be willing to bet Symbian runs on multicore CPUs properly too.

Google should be coming to Nokia to license Symbian as a replacement for Android, not the other way round. Not to mention MS doing the same to replace WP. And yes, I’m totally serious. Symbian is THAT good.

      • Ninja

i.e. NO# is obviously talking complete crap. The whole point about Anna and Belle is they are improvements to EXISTING devices. They will not need better hardware to see all the improvements they bring.

  • dfa

anna, belle etc. i’m tired about that. we all see news about them but we still not have these updates in our hands. Shut up nokia and do the things!

    • KeiZka

So, you are tired, yet you are griping here about your tiredom. You know, patience is a virtue, and those lacking it might just as well jump the ship (or in this case platform)

      • dfa

you tell about patience?? Do you know since when we’re waiting for these fu..ing updates??? I’m here because I liked nokia phones and cross my fingers to have a N8 with modern browser.
I’m not the only one in this case. Nokia is too slow to deliver these updates that’s why a lot of people move away from them (I’m in this case).

        • Dave

You can already have a “modern” browser in the form of Opera. And I’m willing to bet that the revised browser is still slower than Opera.

Yes, it would be nice for less of these apparently artificial delays, but at the end of the day the N8 is a reliable, flexible, functional device. Its doesn’t actually *need* these updates.

  • zack

Nokia is in the business of selling handphones. I think they intentionally do this for people to buy E6 and X7 with new Anna. If they update too fast, there is no selling point for X7 especially.

    • KeiZka

Except it’s quite unique design. I’ve heard singaporeans like it.

  • Ninja

I don’t think this really needs ‘confirming’ like we’re all in constant doubt of Nokia or something. Sure, some people have lost trust in Nokia – but that’s THOSE PEOPLE’S PROBLEM, they’re just paranoid, impatient or whatever. If Nokia said they’re bringing these updates, and shipping new models with them in, that’s fine, I believed them when they said it.

Also, as a long time software developer, I think Nokia are EXTREMELY SENSIBLE to release the Anna update in the way they are – new handsets only to begin with then everyone else in the installed base. They will have tested, and tested, and tested, but as experience has shown many times with the best products from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia and all the rest, problems can STILL creep in that are only discovered in real world deployment. It is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT that Nokia is not releasing Anna until they have a.) totally satisfied themselves with testing internally and b.) release in a manner that is not a big rush, but rather a staged, slow release. Yes, sure that’s frustrating for some people, but frankly those people have their priorities wrong. It’s not like their N8′s are sitting there broken until Anna comes out. These people are impatient and have no clue about the complexities and challenges of software development. Nor, alas, do any of the writers on this blog.

    > Be sure to check out if it has continuous AF as suggested will be a N8 specific feature.

My understanding was the N8 specific video updates (30 fps, cont. autofocus) was a separate and possibly later update, just that Anna was a requirement on your N8 to get that update.

    > will have even kinks in hardware ironed out.
There are no hardware kinks in the N8 en masse that I’ve ever heard of. Like with anything you get a few faulty models in production that are replaced.

People need to stop complaining about Anna availability, and about Belle. You’ll get it when the time is right and not before. So be quiet.

    • spacemodel

      hear, hear!

    • Shiamal Harkison

also, Maybe the full flashed clean anna version is ready, but OTA updates have their own complexities , i mean even apple never used it till now! but by all means nokis please put anna on navifirm :)

      • Paul Grenfell

If they are shipping with Anna, then it must be deliberately hidden from Navifirm Production and if the updates have been sent to Carriers for testing, then it should appear on Navifirm Quality Assurance..Must also be hidden?
Weird state of affairs..Maybe Carriers could confirm one way or the other..?

        • N00-00

I think Nokia has found a new way of doing QA which isn’t getting showed on Navifirm…

          • MoritzJT

They are providing their FWs to testers via VPN Powerflash…

            • Paul Grenfell

              Bummer

        • Ray Hipkiss

The reason Anna hasn’t appeared on Navifirm is because Anna hasn’t been released for any N8 device yet. The Tweet that said new N8′s in store have Anna is just basically a load of bullshit.

    • Mike anderson

      I totally agree with you

even thought it’s taking forever but you got the point !

      • Mike anderson

        even though *

    • Hypnopottamus

“People need to stop complaining about Anna availability, and about Belle. You’ll get it when the time is right and not before.”

You know when the time was right? When it was released late 2010! Who gives a fuck about what Belle can “offer” us when it’s released in 2012. By then, the N8 will be over a year old and newer and better devices (including the N9) will be available. Outside of the camera, other phones TODAY can do everything the N8 will be able to do once it has Belle (6 months from now). Nokia (w/ Symbian in particular) is still playing catch up. Hopefully the N9 (MeeGo) and MAYBE Nokia’s WP7 device will change this.

      *SERIOUSLY*

    • Jorge

You Sr. are the reason why Nokia sales are plumetting down. You and all the loving Nokia customers that will allow for anything to be delayed or done incorrectly. That is why non loyal customers wont even look at Nokia devices anymore, because they see something thats not up to todays standards and you are not there to excuse Nokia by telling them how “difficult” it is to get a good product out. Or how much testing you actually need on software before mass release.(not that Nokia ever has released a flawless product -im a nokia fanboy since I had my n-gage) Good products DO NOT need excuses. They just need to work!

    • Patric Sweden

      :) 1+

  • Cod3rror

Fantastic! All the N8 owners that want Anna Nokia has come up with a solution to help you again! Just buy a new N8!

    • insectskin

if only some people payed taxes for trolling around….
your coments are 99% of the time —-> RIDICULOUS!!

      • Rex

Common, obviously he loves Elope and Nokia VERY much =) Why do you think he bothers to post in every “myNOKIAblog” topics? It just so happens that he loves trolling just as much. Gotta give this kida a cookie ;)

    • Tiv

No no no, sit down little… “error” and listen.

This is how it works, they have begun shipping N8′s and C7′s with Anna, while if you wait a month or so you will get Anna with an OTA update.
So no need to buy a new phone.

I know I know, you think OTA updates are things of the future since iOS5 isn’t due until later this year, but the thing is Nokia has had this feature for years.

Ohh and so there are no misunderstandings, I am implying that you behave like a dumb little kid.

    • Hypnopottamus

While Cod3rror is known for his “trolling,” I don’t see how this comment is too far off. Especially given the following sentence from the above article:

“I’ve heard software isn’t the only things improved on these newer N8s. Can’t confirm but it’s a normal thing that later models will have even kinks in hardware ironed out.”

      • lolll

so iphone doesn’t have that reception issues? ihpone doesn’t have that strange yellow saturation in their pictures…oh wait that’s normal…

        and the new sgs2 doesn’t have a screen issue?…some do…

        • Hypnopottamus

Huh? Who’s even talking about the iPhone? Who’s even talking about the SGS2?

      • Tiv

So you think that Nokia is deliberately waiting an extra month to push out Anna to existing devices for the sole purpose of getting existing users to buy the same device they already have but with Anna?

        • Hypnopottamus

Where are you getting that from?

          • Tiv

Maybe when you said that the following comment wasn’t too far off?

“All the N8 owners that want Anna Nokia has come up with a solution to help you again! Just buy a new N8!”

Which kinda implies that Nokia “helps” users that want Anna by releasing new phones instead of updating the old ones.

            • Hypnopottamus

I’m saying that Nokia releasing newer N8′s with Anna AND possibly newer (better?) hardware while current owners have to wait for the update makes it more tempting to just get a newer N8.

This is NOT the same as saying Nokia is DELIBERATELY withholding updates to existing devices so people get newer ones. That’s too conspiratorial for me. I’m not all out agreeing w/ Cod3rror, but I am saying that Nokia’s timing is pretty lousy.

  • napier

    When does it hit Amazon?

  • Deaconclgi

Forget Anna! I want version 50.xxx for my RM-593! What is the deal Nokia, nachofirm shows the 5thanna update for the other related RMs!!

End sarcasm, continue wait for Anna AND actual RM-593 update…

  • mk

my c7 has heating issues when simultaneously running maps and browser in the background.i took it to Nokia care and they said it is happening to all c7s because of the processor speed(i don’t know if it is truly right).anyone experiencing the same?

    • Keist

My N8 only overheats when I’m using 3G.

      • Vikas Patidar

Because it is runing Elops burning platform.

  • Keist

I guess the infamous purple screen has been fixed on the latest batch of these phones. It just pisses me when I bought a Nokia phone at launch day and paid a premium amount for it yet it has some sort of hardware defect. And now, new batch of N8′s are now out with latest firmware installed, fixed hardware problem and being sold much cheaper. Damn Nokia!

    • Keist

This has always been the case since the N82 days. Nokia is mistreating their early adoptors.

    • Paul Grenfell

Paid $800au for mine, worth maybe $200 on Ebay..

    • sigh

it’s always like that with new products…clothing, electronics, etc…no surprises there…

i remember my brother bought a 64mb mp3 player in 1998 for 300 bucks…it was one of the ‘first’ mp3s…now you can get 4 gb for like 40 bucks lol…

    Hi Jay,
this is Dinesh from the Communications team at Nokia.

At the Nokia Connection event in Singapore, we announced that Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with Symbian Anna will start shipping in July.

The tweet from the Nokia account is confirming this fact, and asks that the person its directed to check with his/her local store for more details. There was no mention of “shipping on those handsets already having started”.

    • Jay Montano

Hi Dinesh, thank you for your comment.

As our blog post mentions, this was mentioned at Nokia Connections and confirms previous promise.

You mentioned, “there was no mention of “shipping on those handsets already having started”.

The @Nokia twitter says, “They’ve started shipping with Anna this month” in reply to C7

ALSO, “N8 has started shipping with Symbian Anna this month”

The twitter account says “started shipping this month” as opposed to “will start shipping”. Apologies if I have misunderstood, but the tweet had said “already started”.

  • Dinesh Subramaniam

    hi Jay,
I’d hit the reply button a little too quickly.
I also wanted to apologise for the misleading information from our twitter account. It was in reply to some folks who were asking about the N8 with Symbian Anna. Instead of saying that they “will start shipping in July” as per our announcement last month in Singapore, the account mentioned “started shipping in July”.

Twitter and tenses – a nasty combo!

    • Jay Montano

Oh I see. Thanks for updating. I’ll update the post.
Just to check, N8 with Anna WILL start shipping this month? (July 2011) :)

      • Paul Grenfell

Ok, so that doesnt seem to make much difference , does it?.. Its still going to be shipped with Anna in July?

  • Dinesh Subramaniam

    Hi Jay,
yes, Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s will start shipping with Symbian Anna in July.
