Video: cuteTube YouTube app on Nokia N950 MeeGo-Harmattan

| July 25, 2011 | 26 Replies

On the weekend we saw what mobile YouTube looked like on the N950. With no Flash, desktop YouTube browsing was no longer an option (like on N900) with the default browser.

Here’s a look at a dedicated YouTube App for MeeGo Harmattan called cuteTube.

  1. YouTube App for MeeGo Harmattan - Cute Tube | July 26, 2011
  1. btdt says:

Qt apps look really good on harmattan.

  2. soussef24 says:

Wow, the more apps like this one I see, the more frustrated I feel about Nokia “dropping” Meego… This is a killer app made in such a short time.

It doesn’t only support Youtube it seems, cause I see dailymotion and vimeo…

Doest it play in HD resolution?

    • Viipottaja says:

Well, have not checked but its most likely a port of a N900 app. Still, good to see some apps starting to appear for the N9. Unfortunately, all I’ve seen so far have been amateur/hobby coder’s apps, i.e. haven’t seen any commercially developed, pay apps yet but I hope they do appear at launch of the device.

      • guest says:

Hmm.. Most Apps for iPhone and Android are done by amateur/indie coders. There’s some apps pre-installed such as Foursquare, Vimeo and Angry Birds.

        • Viipottaja says:

I am not talking about most. I am well aware of iOS and Android stores also being full of amateur(ish) apps. :)

The reason I said it is twofold: 1) I want to have top notch quality, commercial apps available AS WELL 2) commercial apps are an indication of the viability of the ecosystem in the longer run as a commercial platform.

    • guest says:

It doesn’t matter if they drop it. N9 is a good phone for 3 years at least. Then we’ll have other choices available.

      • soussef24 says:

I said that in sens that today more and more elements that would make Nokia successful are finally materializing (Qt, Qt components, Meego Harmattan, Symbian Belle…), but Nokia is shifting strategy!

When you how quickly apps are developed using Qt and how they look thanks to the new guidelines and components you understand that some maturity has finally been achieved… but everything will be wasted thanks to the MS strategy…

        • Viipottaja says:

Well, not __everything__ 1) Symbian will continue for a good while and there is a significant installed userbase already 2) Qt will be used on S40. And N9 might sell a couple of million too.

    • Jay Montano says:

It looks good by Nokia standards. Most of our apps look shite compared to everyone else’s apps so anything remotely OK we’d find great.

      • soussef24 says:

I don’t really agree with you, a lot of apps for iPhone and Android are really crap and amateur, this proportion is certainly higher for Symbian, and there’s a good reason for that as I recently posted in Nokia Conversation blog :

        - The OS UI/UX is still lugging its non-touch screen origins, thus some aspects of the applications and the interface are hard to overcome for developers unless they completely ignore Symbian’s UI/UX paradigm’s in which case they risk to fall into amateurism by building some messed up ergonomics if they are just developers and not backed designers and UI/UX specialists.

        - The lack of clear UI/UX guidelines and updated/attractive components: this issue, recently addressed by the new Symbian Belle and Meego Harmattan Guidelines, as well as the Qt Components, will ensure a very welcome consistency in apps ergonomics by imposing a frame to follow for menu navigation and very good ready to use components. Automatically the application looks much more productized and professional.

I must be browsing a different Ovi Store. The range is possibly quite greater at App Store (crap to awesome), with greater number overall of higher quality looking apps.

The state of quality apps on Ovi Store is quite dire.

          • soussef24 says:

I agree with you, but that should be highly improved now that good framework is available for developers.

Look at the icons example, before Surround icons (Anna) were published, icons on Symbian were really crappy, now people are doing the effort of following recommendations resulting in better icons.

The same would happens for other aspects of the apps, provided that developers still want to develop for Symbian after the recent events!

          • Bastian says:

You can’t see the quality of the Apps just by browsing ovi store. Your comments are weird being this one of the most visited symbian sites. I had a lot of problems with my n8 most of them related with qt and memory. But after making a hard reset twice, using mguard, installing the last version of qt and being aware you can’t install and erase too many apps because they leave traces in memory i had no problems any more and i have installed more than 60 apps.
ios is no paradise either. My ipad2 had two sudden reboots, some apps crash constantly, there are lot of annoying notifications pressuring you to buy something in almost every app, the bills arrives to your mail a few days later, with ovistore they arrive instantly. Ios is very good in some aspects but nothing is perfect. I hate this agressive way of selling full versions or app complements, this is savage capitalism.
There are two great advantage of symbian over ios and wp7, one is file system, you can even download files and videos directly from the internet and uncompress them on your device and the other is ui customization. With apps like widgeleon car plates, home clock, gotomenu, quick launck, fast panel, gridqt, ndesk, spb shell, folder icon, widewallpaper, forcecontrol widget, bubbles, sleep screen, favourite apps, universal search etc.. and a lot of nice themes you can change completely the appearance of the ui and increase its fonctionnality.

“You can’t see the quality of the Apps just by browsing ovi store. ”

So me checking out the Ovi Store, downloading apps, and not really being satisfied by the quality of apps is not good enough? Where am I supposed to find these quality apps for Symbian^3 then?

The fence may not be totally greener on iOS but apps I’m finding are generally of higher quality. Let’s not mention games because any good games on S^3 are old ports from iOS.

Although I’m a Nokia fan, this isn’t something I can ignore. I’m looking for apps to play with, to share, to video but nothing really that good. It’s quite rare to find a great Symbian app. We should see a new fantastic one every day. Just 30 great apps per month, is that too much? (I understand great is subjective – I mean good/functional with polish.)

              • Bastian says:

I mentioned some great apps for symbian in my post below, cnn app is flawless, horus is a rss reader almost as good as pulse on the ipad. Betalabs has many usefull and good looking applications that you can’t find in ovi store. There’s nothing like bubbles or sleep screen for ios. Molome looks quite good and had several updates, i don’t know how it is for sharing because i’m not a facebook fan. Excepting for the camera i don’ really see any lack of apps. But colorizit and even camera pro, shutterpro and pocketbooth, photo 3 d are as good as ios camera apps. Recordoid is a great voice recorder app and I don’t know if you can record calls in ios but there are very good apps for this in symbian. Magic brush is an excellent drawing app. Spb time, astroller, touch hider, and i could go on. Maybe you need more apps for sharing but i really hate the facebook era. And most of the good games are indeed ported from iphone but how many of them do you really need aniways? You should be glad there is still some interest in symbian after stephen elop destroys it with every word he says. If it wasn’t for him there would be much more symbian apps and n8 would be selling. It’s the first ceo i see that works only for destroying the company he is directing.

                • Bastian says:

And I was forgotting nokia trailers, qoocontrol, vectir, true caller, spb tv, youtube downloader, vlingo plus, for me is more than enough. Ok maybe i would need a better dictionary app and that’s it. Now i use slovoed.

      • bastian says:

This is a very unfair thing to say. I have an ipad2 and a nokia n8, and sincerely I have the same quality apps in both devices. I even feel there is almost the same quantity of apps for both. Apps like cnn, battery monitor, ap mobile, lyrics, ttpod, internet radio, loop, colorizit, molome, horus, 3dworld gaze, gtranslator, nokia live view, nokia bubbles, sleep screen to name a few have nothing to envy to ios apps. Talking about this app in particular I can say this one is much better compared to ios youtube app. In ios you can´t even sort by date, as a matter fact there is any kind of sorting option, videos appear randomly. Here you can choose between vimeo, dailymotion and youtube and you have various options of sorting which for me is great. Really I don´t think the problem of symbian is lack of apps or low quality apps; you can find all the most important things and most of the best games. IOS also have a lot of very poor quality apps and dozens that do the same. And for the installation problems, install the last qt version and they will be solved. The real problem of symbian is that nokia has always been greedy with memory and processor speed, ¨memory full close some applications and try again¨ is a nokia classic. If they make an n8 with 1ghz processor, 1gb of ram, symbian belle and a four inch screen i´d buy it inmediatly.

  4. Dpac says:

Since this is developed in Qt there is a possibility of porting it to Symbian^3, right?

Will it work well on N8s? Symbian^3 based phones are also in dire need of a good Youtube app (the official Youtube app is really clunky and outdated).

    • xexexe says:

Well, this guy promised to publish this app also for symbian – you can check his blog on May 2011…
I think he is a complete Nokia fanboy – he releases his apps on the same rate as Nokia releases its firmware – maybe on August 2012 we will receive cutetube for Symbian!
Marxian, you are the best – Elop loves you :D

  5. hopenot says:

give me another good quality app for n9

    i want to have

youku app for n9, youku.com is china leading video sharing site, oit allows long movie, tv show upload and download.

  6. Jeff says:

    c0d3rror is oddly quiet.

He had much criticism for youtube in the browser the other day.
Due to some functionality a dedicated iOS youtube app brings, that the the site + browser can’t

Look like this is now a non-issue.
    c0d3rror? ;)
