3500 new improvements in MeeGo Harmattan PR1.2?

| January 16, 2012 | Comments (48)

I’m not sure if I’m recalling this correctly, was it PR1.1 or PR1.2 that was stated before to have over 3000 improvements? (Did a search and results mentioned 1.1)

Anyway, Nokia Connects mentioned that PR1.2 is coming with over 3500 improvements.

If you think this list is long, it’s going to be a whole lot longer sometime soon. Why? Because the next update, PR1.2, will increase the tweaks and improvements, since launch, to a whopping 3500.

The update as just posted is coming soon to the Nokia N950 developer unit.

Main things we saw from the latest screenshots were video calling, folders and improved copy and paste. We also know there’s some improvements in the already amazing camera UI from the first batch of screenshots.

awesome and as i recall it was 1.2 that was supposed to have a tonne of updates

    should be sweet

  2. Shaun says:

PR1.2 sounds like a big update.

IIRC, Cut and Paste is supposed to be a system wide feature rather than just ‘improved’ although you could say that is an improvement.

I’m wondering what will break with the font size change. I do hope all the developers have got a handle on that one as it’d be a pity to lose some apps between PR1.1 and PR1.2.

    • asdf says:

I guess improved is the right term since copy/paste has always existed system wide, but has been omitted from the default applications. You can copy things from the terminal and paste as the browser URL just fine for example. Things like browser text selection are missing as of now. Probably just one of the things left out at launch because of deadlines.

      • Shaun says:

Terminal got cut and paste in an update around about PR1.1 time but so far it’s also absent in mail, twitter/facebook, contacts…

In Qt, although the clipboard is ‘system wide’, you’ve still got to write code to hook your cut/copy/paste menu in. I presume there’s been something done in libmeegotouch too as a LOT of the commits over the last couple of months have been related to text selection and cut/paste.

I presume app developers still have to write the hook code but it looks like at the deeper OS level there’s something else going on.

Cut and paste in Mail and the browser is the main ones for me. It’s maddening that someone will send me an email with text in they need updated on a website and I can’t cut out of mail and into the browser or even terminal.

    PR 1.1 had 3500 bug fixes. http://twitter.com/konttori

    • meh says:

      http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79248

Some info, mostly 1.1 but some 1.2 info too…

“1.1 is all about reliability, performance and polish. 1.2 is all about adding new features. As it turned out, 1.1 already had plenty of features, mostly due to slipped schedule.”

” There is “universal copy/paste” in 1.2. Of course there is partial copy paste already in 1.0 and 1.1.”

Folders will come in 1.2 to home screen.

“Facebook has tons of fixes in both 1.1 and 1.2. I’d say it’s bearable in 1.1.”

  4. Dan says:

I hope they fix the battery issue… A day with almost no use even after killing the theme thing…. AND PUT Fennec FLASH AND SKYPE VIDEO ON!!! That would be amazing :)

    • asdf says:

That sounds odd. You should be getting much better battery life out of your device. There was an issue with pulseaudio that drained the battery, but that was fixed in PR1.1. You might have some rogue process eating up your cpu.

      • meh says:

There is still some battery bug with 1.1, happens very rarely though. I even saw Nokia employee mentioning it on twitter…

      • Punching Bag says:

I have battery issues too. For example

Using the GPS in drive mode, my battery was almost entirely drained from full charge after a 40 min drive, and it went into <20% power save mode.

In contrast, on the way back, we used a N8 for GPS. It went down only 1 battery bar.

        • inajoba says:

I had the same issue with GPS draining the battery very fast and the phone getting hot. I switched off ‘allow background connections’ and the problem disappeared, now the battery usage is normal.

        • Shaun says:

I concur on the GPS power drain. I noticed it when I left Foursquare running once. Usually I get to midnight before I notice the N9 running low but after switching Foursquare on at about 1pm, the phone was telling me it was low at about 5pm.

    • Viipottaja says:

AFAIK, no Skype video calling. Just Gtalk (have yet to met anyone actually using that regularly). :(

      • jiipee says:

have you seen any statistics, what is the percentage of smartphone owners using video call function? It does not seem to be common in Finland at least.

It would be interestin to hear some estimates on the amount of developers still working on the N9 upgrades. Cannot be many. I’d expect support for Skype video calling, if that would be in the interest of Meltemi target consumers, when the system is going to be Qt based.

        • DesR85 says:

“have you seen any statistics, what is the percentage of smartphone owners using video call function? It does not seem to be common in Finland at least.”

Nobody I know uses video call on their handphones. Even a friend of mine who knows how to use it on his iPhone 3GS only did so to use up his remaining 3G data balance.

Regardless if I get an N9 or a Lumia 800, I doubt I will even use either one to make video calls. I don’t view it as a loss if there is no front camera for the latter.

  5. Stein says:

I have this feeling that the 3500 “added features” are actually deductions …to smoothen the transition to windows phone

  6. M says:

What ever happened to getting Shazam as part of an update? I figured that part was a lil too good to be true.

  7. Mate says:

Yet they refuse to add Windows Live and Yahoo Messenger support into the Accounts app.

    Nokia I am disappoint.

  8. GL says:

I really hope Wordfeud is one of the new “features” (but haven’t found any indication of it so far…)
    Anyone else heard anything…?

  9. pjasinow says:

    Add 3501 changes. Wordswithfriends.:)

  10. [...] mynokiablog.com, looks like there are some news for the Nokia N9, firmware update coming soon with thousands of [...]

  11. Derek says:

I just hope for a permenant fix for the wifi hotspot bug for us USA customers and browser flash, push notifications for twitter and better music player.

    • Punching Bag says:

I think they admitted it wasn’t a “bug,” and actually some FCC or similar thing that they didn’t care about dealing with since it’s not released in the USA

It’s annoying but not fatal, just do that echo command thing in terminal

    • Nrde says:

      “better music player”

      Have you seen QuasarMX?

The stock player does what it’s supposed to do very well and I doubt it’s getting any big new features.

  12. allan says:

The way I read it, it says, that the TOTAL number of fixes and added features since launch INCLUDING PR1.1 AND PR1.2 will be 3500. In other words PR1.2 won’t have 3500 fixes by itself. It’s only when you add the number of fixes in PR1.1 to those in PR1.2 that you get that number. No?

    :/

  13. Just Visiting says:

3500? So I don’t understand why this device was released when it needed 3500 improvements to make it fully functional. Why not just wait until everything was ready? To me, this was released as Beta; which I guess is nothing new given that Microsoft did the same when they released WP in 2010, when they should have waited until 2011 at the earliest.

  14. fr says:

will there be a flash support, bookmark in the default browser?

theme customizer is great for n9

  15. pjasinow says:

can anyone get the video to play from the site
http://www.wimp.com, with my n8 it down loads the file first then you play it.
But with the n9 it just says this video is not supported by your browser

  16. SHAKAIB says:

i am also facing battery issue after updating to P.R1.1 its shows 35% than suddenly it signals battery down dont know why:(

    • Rezza says:

For me it’s happening while freezing outside – temperature under zero degrees – battery is low but I can use it without any problems. And after few minutes inside it’s again ok. But I had this problem with nearly I gadgets I’ve ever had. My mp3 player stop right when I left the doors :(

  17. Chris_Skylock says:

The total improvements from PR 1.00 to PR.1.2 is 3500. So that 3500 were divided into three. It could have 1000 for PR 1.1 and added some more to make it 3500 when PR1.2 arrives

  18. noobkia says:

    i want an n9

  19. Jackson says:

That Nokia Connects article is plain wrong…

konttori was talking about PR1.1 when he referred to 3500 improvements:
    http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.com/2011/10/n9-on-sale-in-finland-and-few-other.html
That no. is mostly perf/stability/usability/security etc bug-fixes.

PR1.2 is geared more as a feature-add release.
So there’ll be significantly more new features than 1.1.
I hope there’s many bug-fixes though, 1.1 was a letdown in that regard.

  20. 水水 says:

will N9 support JAR in the future?

  21. Turbid says:

So is it real, or a fake?

    • Jackson says:

      What are you talking about…
Try reading some of the newer stories.
This ones like 11 days old man.
      Of course PR1.2 is “real”…
